would the overlay area produce more than the center?

Probably not much (if at all), since a couple patches ago the painite (or whatever mineral is on the hotspot) becomes rarer further away rom the center of the hotspot, so the unless the yellow zones overlap, the benefit of red zone edge overlaps will likely be negligible (if any) compared to the yellow area on each hotspot.

Best to test it, mine 1 hour in the edge overlap, then another in one of the yellow zones and compare results.

well unfortunately i found about 12 painite spots, 3 overlays but all in metallic rich - so...
