Discussion What is the most efficient way to crowdsource the 3D system coordinates

I'm currently working on just that. I'm not messing about with the core function which gets passed 4 values though.

Instead I'm attempting to make it run all possible unique permutations if there are more than 4 systems entered (up to 126 for 9 points of reference) and then average out the values from all results to see how accurate the resulting coordinates are. I've already found a suitable function for outputting all the possible permutations so it shouldn't take long to code the rest.

Sounds like a very solid plan. Chromatix stated that when taking more then four reference points the extra distances could be used to determine which (if any) distances were entered incorrectly. Will you be able to do that with your approach as well? Would be cool. Removing the errant one(s) could improve the calculated 3D coordinates. I wish you all the luck with your coding and I hope you will be able to show us the results of your effort soon(ish) ;-)

Which is significantly different to the spreadsheet result:

The php implementation is returning massively varying coordinates by the looks of things and this is messing up the potential for averaging.

Got to do with vector math. Too late to remember the specifics, but in some cases a set of coords will be related in ways that make them unsuitable.

Drop a system and use another for reference.

I tested this on stars at the far end of the pill, that where included in the script, using distances from 4 stars at the Arcturus end of the pill. Its 99.99% accurate and for any practical use you will get an accurate enough distance calculation to feed into a graph that you run dijkstra on.

Indeed very strange. Hopefully you will be able to find the culprit. Had a small look at the data. Often the 3D coordinates are pretty much the same, sometimes they differ quite a bit. Perhaps the reference points suggested are not ideal for a certain permutation in combination with a certain 'current star system'. I totally lack the knowledge to determine that. Perhaps Chromatrix who suggested the reference points can shed some light on it. As in determine what is going on. Or of course any other commander who has created a program for this. Good luck and well done. This stuff is science on it own!!

OR just add that Coord on galaxy map above or under the system distance. If we already have the distance, would be logical that our ship already knew the Coords or how would we know the distance?

Would they add it if we had enough support?

I've compared them with the ones in the crowd-sourced spreadsheet. Most are nearly the same but some are completely different.

Hagalaz crowd-sourced spreadsheet: -51.967872, 36.653411, 2.52069
Hagalaz calculatet by me: -50.59375, 45.15625, 11.09375

I checked Hagalaz in game and the spreadsheet coords are wrong. I didn't check all of them.



The rounding was done only to compare the manual and calculatet values and the galaxy map only shows 3 decimals.

The programm works internaly with the whole numbers (x*32, ...) of the coordinates and only converts them for display. This makes the trilateration more accurate.

/edit: added crowd-sourced to spreadsheet to be clear which one I mean.

I have patched this into Trade Dangerous and it now gives this:

I'm not sure if it's useful to anyone at this point, but I've been independently doing a lot of the same work. I have the raw data for a number of systems, and have trilaterated data for around 100 stars. I've checked a handful of the estimated distances and they all seem to be reasonably accurate.

As for choice of reference systems:

When I faceplant an unknown star, I just use SOL, EOS, Aulin and Toyota as reference. Easy to remember and type into the navigation part of Galaxy Map. If I was not so lazy I would find 2 other 3 letter systems from Michael Brookes spreadsheet and save myself even more time.

In Beta 1 I just used the system map and entered the systems into my database. In Beta 2 its just too many stars to get it right. The best method have been to visit systems, write down what systems they connect to and keep a bucket list of visited systems.

I very much doubt much will change regarding coords in the "pill" for Beta 3 or Gamma, so it will be good navigational data. What I expect to change is what we find in some of the systems. The systems that are currently missing docks, but that are populated. Multiple markets in a system (have not found any of them so far).

A certain amount of housekeeping have to be expected in a game like this. As long as there is no proper route planning in the game, a 3rd party tool is needed. As long as the game dont remember where you have been, you have to write stuff down (unless you've got a very very good memory).

I think I might have just come up with a better way to solicit data from the community.

Instead of asking people to visit new systems and grab the distances to reference stars, why not do the opposite? Except that we don't really even need to define reference stars. With the +/- .0005 accuracy of the distance shown on the galaxy map, compared to the .03125 grid size, it doesn't matter too much which stars you have distances to. And we can always ask for another distance measurement if the calculated coordinates for some star system aren't accurate enough. i.e. if there are multiple grid points in a 5x5x5 grid area centered on the calculated coordinate that also match the data.

So, I envision an interface where the user visits a website or whatever, and enters the star system where they are currently located. And then the system displays the name of a star system that needs more data. The user would then go to the galaxy map and grab the distance to that star from their current location and enters it. The system would then show the name of another star.. The user could add as many or as few distances as they want.

The main advantages of this system is that it is super simple, and anyone can contribute at any time, from wherever they happen to be. It should also reduce typos in the system names, because they will only have to enter one system name - the name of the system they are in. Although, it's possible they could typo the name of a system in the galaxy map, and get the distance for the wrong system. I.e. Wredguia VM-Q V12-3 instead of Wredguia WM-Q V12-3, or something.

The main downside is that we would need to somehow get a list of "unknown" systems - systems that we don't have any distances/coordinates for yet. So maybe we could have a second type of user input, where the user just inputs names of systems. So if you're out exploring unknown space, you could just write down the names of systems visible in the nav panel. Or someone in "known" space could contribute to this by grabbing some names from the galaxy map.

I'm currently working on just that. I'm not messing about with the core function which gets passed 4 values though.

Instead I'm attempting to make it run all possible unique permutations if there are more than 4 systems entered (up to 126 for 9 points of reference) and then average out the values from all results to see how accurate the resulting coordinates are. I've already found a suitable function for outputting all the possible permutations so it shouldn't take long to code the rest.

I'm going to do something similar with my javascript implementation. I'll run all the combinations of the reference systems, but instead of averaging I'll choose the coordinates for the single run that results in the most accurate distances to all the reference systems. I might also use all the other reference systems to pick the candidate rather than just one. Effectively this means I'm generating the coordinates using the best 4 (3 really) reference systems.

I plan to get this coded tonight and then I'll test it on all the systems Michael provided.

The results certainly look a lot more consistent when the reference stars are spread out in such a manner.

As I said yesterday, selection of reference systems is critical given how inaccurate our distance data is. In particular it is not good if two of the three systems used to generate the candidate coordinates are close to lying on a line with the unknown system, or if all three reference systems are close to lying on a plane with the unknown system.

For example, if you try to calculate the coordinates for Eranin using Sol, Flousop, and Tring (with say Rahu to confirm the candidate) you'll get noticeable error when measuring to Parcae: distance with calculated coordinates 28.493 vs real distance 28.482. If you calculate the coordinates for Eranin using Sol, Tring, and Rahu then the accuracy is much better.

I think that using distances with 3 decimals of precision the errors will usually be small enough that we don't really have to worry about this too much. But with only 2 decimals of precision it's very easy to get a situation where the wrong candidate point is chosen. This happens if you calculate Eranin using Sol, Flousop, and Tring with only 2 decimals:
Eranin-Sol: 43.10
Eranin-Flousop: 29.43
Eranin-Tring: 115.90
Edit: confirming the candidate using Eranin-Rahu: 33.32
Calculated coordinates: (-24.259, 35.548, 2.329)
Real coordinates: (-22.844, 36.531, -1.188)

So if we're going to allow data with 2 decimals (from the HUD) then we need to be more careful to pick the best reference systems to calculate from.

I very much doubt much will change regarding coords in the "pill" for Beta 3 or Gamma, so it will be good navigational data. What I expect to change is what we find in some of the systems. The systems that are currently missing docks, but that are populated. Multiple markets in a system (have not found any of them so far).

Yes, I agree, it's very unlikely that the system location code will change for beta 3 or gamma. But the stellar forge stuff that generates the contents of the system probably will get further tuning.

I haven't seen any systems with multiple markets either, but I bet they're in gamma if not beta 3. I'd be surprised if there was significant differences in prices for goods within a system but I guess it's something trading tools will have to handle, at least if different stuff is available in each market.

Just need to add the unoccupied systems. Maybe there's a spreadsheet of them released also.

Guess where that other thread got the link? We're using that list of occupied systems as references to calculate the remaining systems.

Michael said that it's difficult to extract the remaining unoccupied systems. But even if they did for beta 2 they won't be willing to do that for all 400 billion systems. The best we can hope for (IMO) is to be able to query some API for the names and coordinates of all systems in a sector, and even if we get that they probably won't take kindly to someone trying to iterate all the sectors in the galaxy.
