ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Is there a way to edit a config file to increase the field of view beyond the in-game setting?

This is done for the Rift somehow, can it be done without, too?

Thanks, I'll maybe try that tomorrow. Just tried the Rift on my laptop and it powered up ok, so it must be some sort of power/setting fault with my pc. Maybe the bios, I don't know what else to try.

Always read the small print on bios and use the correct program for your mobo to do it. I updated "from server" the other week on my work built and even though everything worked fine, My pc would boot to bios everytime but would be fine on restart. Had to re up date from file this time last night and all my usb problems were solved.

Christina - sorry for the dumb question - you may virtually slap me if appropriate. I assume your elite is set to 1920x1080 for your rift? and not 1280x800 like DK1?

Also, which graphics card are you using? if Nvidia, try creating a special profile just for elitedangerous32.exe and just leave it to default and see if that does anything?

are the menus themselves also very blurry? or only once you load the game?

Hi
just elite, :)

Well I got my rk2 today, plugged it all in and the Orange light comes on, then goes out and my windows desktop flashes off and back on. Then there is no orange light. It comes on orange for a flash if I press the rifts on button, but then goes off immediately. I've been over the plugs several times and tried several different USB ports, all with the same result. There must be power if I am getting a brief orange flash though. Any ideas?

Did you update the rift firmware?

Hi

Go into the Graphics options.
Check the resolution in there
Is it 1920 X 1080?
Is the refresh rate 75Hz?

If so check that you have Oculus Speakers or Headphone selected and not side by side 3D.

If that doesn't work then try opening this file
C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME HERE\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\Settings.xml
You're looking for this part
<IPDAmount>0.042972</IPDAmount>

Amend it to match your IPD (look in Advanced in the Oculus Config Utility for this) e.g. if your IPD is 60 change it to <IPDAmount>0.060</IPDAmount>

FOV is in there.

No, I just downloaded the SDK, and then plugged it all in. How do I update the firmware?

In the Rift configuration utility. Right click on the rift icon in the taskbar, and in the middle menu of the window (iirc), there is an update firmware option.

First evenings rifting.....

...pretty easy to setup. just installed the newest runtime, set to extended and faffed in windows to make sire the display through the rift was the right way up then started the demo scene and faffed with the IPD calibration.

With the rift on, there's a little air hole at the bottom of your vision so you can still see where you've put the beer bottle, which is nice

In ED. WOW!!! the inside of your cockpit!!! and the space stations!!!! GULP!!! I just flew around in and out of Azeban drooling and gibbering. I was supposed to be in an MP bounty hunting flight but all my wingman could hear over Skype was "F**K me mate", etc.

I've had TrackIR for years but this is a different league. Being able to look round in the cockpit 180 degrees, and lean over adds so much to the experience.

I'm not fussed about the resolution as, if you've ever sat in a real cockpit you have to lean over to see gauges all the time. Its normal.

My one issues is focus. its blurry. Im a little short-sighted and wear glasses for driving. I've not tried the other smaller rift lenses or tried with my glasses on.

Am I right in thinking there's no manual focus and that its fixed?

What are the "comfort" adjusters for on the sides? Just so you can move the lenses back to fit on glasses? And why do you have to match their position with the setting in the config app?

I've noticed that just moving the visor a few mm up and down your face affects focus, its that sensitive.

If I can get the focus sorted, I will be one happy bunny!!

PS. game pretty smooth with my gtx 780 with everything maxed but shadows on medium. Considering a 980 though. £399 on scan.co.uk

You should use your glasses and the A cups. You can't change the focus as such. Since you've set your IPD up that's about as much as you can do regards calibration. That just sets the distance between your eyes so the 3D effect is setup correctly. Too low or too high and things look too big or too small.

The "comfort" adjusters just move the screen and lenses closer or further away from your face. The closer it is the more FOV you get up to a point but I personally don't like them too close to my face. If my eyelashes are scraping the lenses it's too close IMO. I have mine about half way.

Position on your head is important. If it's not sat right you will get blur. Basically there is a sweet spot where everything is clear and nothing is blurry. Just adjust it till you get the sweet spot and you will be fine, after a while it'll become second nature.
Blur can also mean you've got head grease on your lenses, give them a wipe :)
I have a bandanna I wear when rifting, stops me getting stuff on the lenses when resting it on my forehead.

Cheers for the advice. I was worried about putting glasses on as I'd heard they may scratch the lenses. Also, the DK1 came with "B" cup lenses as well, whereas you just get "A" and "C" with the DK2.

What's the point of the slider in the config utility to match it to the position of the "comfort" screw that moves the lenses fore and aft?

And one final question, what are your key in-game settings and do you bother with Nvidia CP settings? Is there any point with AA for instance with a low res display?

Don't know about regular AA and haven't tried the Rift yet, but I read that supersampling the game (setting a higher resolution in nvidia settings than scaling the image down to your Rift display) gives a much clearer picture and lets you read things more easily.

Unless you get deep scratches you won't see them with the rift on. Mine's got loads of micro scratches from cleaning them, can't see them with it on.
I'd take scratches any day of the week over not being able to see it in all it's glory ;)

Yeah the separation slider in the config utility should match what setting you have it on. Not noticed any difference though if you have it at a different setting.

I set my main monitor to 1280x1024 and 75Hz in Nvidia CP, this is so it matches the same refresh rate as the rift (as it's normally 1440p/60hz).
I supersample to 1440p rather than running it at 1080p, gives a slightly better image. With this on I lower shadows to medium, AO off, AA off, Blur off, everything else at Max.
Still get a bit of judder in stations and rings but I get that no matter what settings I choose.
At the very least turn blur off, numerous people have said that with it on it causes judder.
Play single player in the rift, online seems to introduce some minor performance issues.

Could someone point out what I'm doing wrong please? I still can't get it to work with Elite..

OCU version 1.4 Rev 1 (SDK 0.4.2)
Firmware 2.12

Installed the runtime, set IPD and the demo scene works fine.

Change to Extend the desktop in the HMD.
In Nvidia Control Panel, I have change to portrait and I can see the desktop fine (but not all of it) IF I set the resolution of the Rift to 948x1080... any other resolution and it looks like I'm seeing a different part of the desktop with each eye.

With it set to 948x1080, I start elite, it appears on my normal screen. In Options->Graphics, I can see and set the Primary or secondary (the Rift) monitor. IF I set it to secondary, I have to change the resolution to 948x1080 to be able to see it in the Rift, other wise it looks like left and right have been swapped over. I have also tried with it set to 1920x180, but it looks the same.

Now, one stumbling block I cannot get past is in the 3D Experimental option, the Rift does not appear as an option, so I get no further...

Please can someone help? I have tried lots of procedures found in google but nothing helps yet...

theres another option in the ED GFX settings that's something like "oculus rift - headphones" or summat. Have a look-see

Change the resolution to 1920x1080 and set the orientation to portrait flipped in Nvidia CP.
When looking at the desktop it won't ever look normal as the distortion effects that make the screen look normal with the lenses isn't applied. It should look the right way up though and the left side of the screen should be on the left and right on the right.

Once you got that bit sorted try it again, if you're still not able to select Oculus Rift in the 3D separation settings follow the instructions I messaged you.
