ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I don't know if this is going to be any help but I did try to help out someone else a few weeks back. The post I wrote is
here

You shouldn't need to pause the service anymore.
By all means try it, but if you are pausing the service and getting issues then stop pausing the service.

Ok not sure if it´s right asking these here because offcially i´m not a current owner of an Oculus Rift but....

I CAN´T WAIT ANYMORE...

80% decided to go for the DK2, the 20% left is due to the following concerns:

1. I have recently bought a new system, GTX 780ti and a i7 4770k processor, you guys think it will run ED smoothly, i mean, now i can´t play anything below 60hz /frames per second, i know DK2 runs at 75hz, even better, but anybody here can play at that refresh rate with a similar rig without lowering ED settings too much?

2. It´s Said that the CV version still will take some time to see the light, i was hoping at the beginning of the year, but recent news says it won´t be until final 2015, i think it is true due two reasons, one is the lack of contents for virtual reallity, and the other one, the actual specs of home computer seems to be not enough for a decent virtual experience, i mean, 1440p at 75/100 hz i think even with a single GTX 980 is hard to mantain, yes you can buy two videocards and put them in sli (when it works right), plus a new computer plus the oculus, but it can be not a great idea if oculus whant to succeed with the normal consumer. (the concern about this is if you see it the same way, i would be upset if i buy now a DK and in three months they release a CV)

What i can assume is:

the lack of resolution right now, some people says still you cannot read clear menus for example.

The complexity of setting it up, i´m a bit freak with computers and technology.

Lowering a bit ED (and other games) settings if the result is an amazing experiece anyway.

Final Questions:

Have you been playing for a long time? How your body and vision reacts?, some times with my actual trackir i feel my neck very tired.

Really is so amazing???, c´mon, be sinceer

(Please excuse me if i´m not posting this in the right place, i will delete it and open a new thread )

Your gfx card is better than mine so you will be fine. The first time you look up in a station and shout OHMYGODLOOKATTHATIMSOSMALL you wont regret the purchase. When you are grinning like a chimp as you spend half an hour just circling azaban city gawping you wont regret the purchase. and whern you lean over in your chair and see they HAVE MODELLED THE UNDERSIDE OF THINGS you wont regret your purchase.

2 months before CV1 comes out, sell it on ebay

Jobs a good-un

As for resolution vs. readouts. Lean forward a bit like in a real life cockpit.

Could my problem be due to having an AMD cpu? or has that gone away now?

That should have gone away now that E: D is against 0.4.2 SDK.
I'm out of idea about your issue dude.
Only thing I can suggest is uninstalling everything, unplugging everything and redoing it all step by step.

Make sure you are following these steps exactly (don't bypass any thinking that it won't be that, your out of options and need to triple check everything to ensure it's done perfectly).

Uninstall all Oculus rift software (make sure you get all of it)
Down load the 0.4.2 runtime from the site (not the SDK, the runtime)
Install the runtime.
Plug the rift HDMI in (make sure you're plugging into your GPU and not your IGPU)
Plug the rift USB in (can use USB 3.0 (blue) or 2.0 (black)(Ideally at the back of your PC not the front))
Plug the camera into the little box
Plug the power supply into the little box
Plug the camera USB into a USB 2.0 socket only (Ideally at the back of your PC not the front).
You should now have 2 cables going into the camera, all 4 cables in and out of the little box, the HDMI plugged in and 2 USB cables into the correct slots.

Open the config utility
Turn the rift on
Update the firmware (yeah again if needs be)
Put the rift in Direct mode if not already
Look at the config utility, does it look like this? (obviously with 2.12 rather than 2.11)
2014-07-30-Oculus-Rift-DK2-Config-B-Lens.jpg
Check the demo scene
IF OK then change the rift to extended.
Close the utility (do not pause it)
Try the game
Still doesn't work? Close the game, pause the service, try the game again.

If you follow that and it still doesn't work then all I can suggest is reinstalling Elite.

Well the great news is this thing turned up...

The bad news is I have to leave the house in an hour and have an early to work tomorrow so wont get my hands dirty till tomorrow evening.

anyone got any advice?

I got the DK2, I removed the runtime and reinstalled the latest version, connected up the kit and connected the hdmi connector into the graphics card and connected the USB and power supply up. checked to see that the DK2 is running the latest firmware.

the demo in the configuration utility runs just fine with head tilt working,

BUT!

the DK2 doesn't appear to display with any other application. what appears to happen with some is that head movement is shown on the monitor as working when I move the DK2 around but it wont display on the headset. the other thing is that Elite has now decided to run in window mode. and wont return to full screen.

has anyone got any advice.

thanks

DK2 in the house! It's going to be a long and late night. Thanks for all the reposts of guides recently.

Sounds like it's not set to extended mode. If it is, kill all OR services and restart them.

made no difference, elite just starts with 3d set to off.

Yep, extended mode. I did try with direct mode and the 3d options aree there... so it is something to do with elite not detecting the presence of the rift when in extended mode. Rift is set to secondary.

Does your rift work with any other demos? Try connecting your Rift to a different display on your video card. Even if you have HDMI, try moving it to a DVI port with the provided DVI to HDMI adaptor or vice versa.

Yep. Tutorial Missions are Offline (you can disconnect from the Internet and they fully work). I have experienced the same as you - I have tried getting some attention to this on the forums, but so far there seems to be very little interest in this issue. Here is what I posted before:

Question is, why is there such a huge FPS difference between Offline Play and Online Play.

Additionally, there is a huge difference in fps between Beta 1.06 and the current beta, as you can see above.

There is a very good reason why this is, and it has nothing to do with network performance or being online. It's because the tutorial missions are separate from the online content. Some of those demos/tutorial were made awhile back. So the materials/shaders being used might not be as complex or are more optimized than the current development. When developing a game, you're working on getting your assets into the game, you then go back over them and see if you can improve the method/optimize for performance. The Devs are busy adding complexity/content to the game. So yes, you'll find that performance may differ between online and offline content. Just to be clear Solo is still "online" content. Think of the tutorials, as individual little packets of somewhat optimized content.

The Rift works fine with most demos.

I'm just rolling back to Nvidia driver 340 to see if that changes anything, then I'll try the HDMI in a DVI port.

I finally figured out what the feeling I got the first time I played ED with the DK2 reminded me of; the first time I went to a planetarium as a small child.

It's been 40 years so it took me a bit to remember but, that's the exact "feeling" I had so many years ago. :D

Beta 2.06 is out :

"The change log for 2.06 can be seen below:
- Ensure correct flag set when there are repeated authority transfers
- When starting docked, start in your own island
- Prevent ambient NPCs spawning before player is ready
- Tighten key and seed generation flow
- Add thread locks to protect against threading issues on server
- Additional docking logging
- Increment network protocol version

On top of these changes, a few server-side updates have been implemented. You can see the details below:
- After the weekend's excellent testing, we've made some more performance improvements to the Exploration Servers. In particular, the Universal Cartographics shop should respond more quickly.
- Fixed a softlock whenever a Commander purchased a different ship."

<snip>
If that doesn't work then try opening this file
C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME HERE\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\Settings.xml
You're looking for this part
<IPDAmount>0.042972</IPDAmount>

Amend it to match your IPD (look in Advanced in the Oculus Config Utility for this) e.g. if your IPD is 60 change it to <IPDAmount>0.060</IPDAmount>

Ok tried that tonight, with a very good rift setup (for me). IPD in setup file was .0300 (I've caught fish with bigger IPD than that ) Set it to 0.0636 from the OR calibrations settings. No change still perfect. I think ED takes the value direct from the SDK.

Side note. Just played before tonight's build, "night" dark landing at outpost, no idea of station outline or pad till requested docking and it illuminated. Wow that was Fun. :D Bring it on.

A gtx 770/680 will run judder free/75fps all times with the following settings:
Aa off
Ao off
Shadows low
Oculus quality down one notch

With oculus quality full it will judder in stations.

I know as I have one

LOL welly_59 you are a bad person ;)

Got my new DK2 and tested ED with my GTX 770. I read your post but could only get 75 FPS with Graphics preset = Low and Oculus quality = Medium.

So spent yesterday overclocking my CPU / GPU / misc and my benchmark (3DMark11) went from P8004 to P9718. With much excitement I ran ED again but gutted to find little or no change!

So I just trawled back through the thread and found below - DOH!! :D

.... Ive just upgraded to a 680 sli setup after having a single card ..... 680 SLI + DK2 - 75 fps.
