Newcomer / Intro Horizons - How to get back in your ship from then SRV

Well, that was 2 hours of my life I won't get back. To spare you from the agonizing frustration of "how the heck do i get back in my ship!" follow these steps:

FROM SPACE PORT
---------------------
You will re-enter at the same bay you left. If you don't know where that is:
- Target yourself from the contacts menu, you can now see where you're docked on the map
- Drive to 'yourself' using the map. Make sure you're at ground level!

Then
- Request to dock from the station exactly the same as you would if you were in your ship. i.e. Contacts - *Station Name* - Request Docking.
- Now drive into the bay and look down. There should be a metal grate in the middle of the 'bay'. Park on the metal grate.
- Using the SRV menu, select "Proceed to garage"

FROM SURFACE
------------------
- Recall / Drive back to your ship
- Notice the lights on the bottom of your ship indicating the 'garage'
- Park directly under it (yea it's a PITA)
- Use SRV menu and reenter ship.

EASY MODE
--------------
- Self destruct (arguably worth the 5k)

I got frustrated too and eventually ran out of oxygen trying to redock.

Approach your ship from the front. Look at the lights on the right. Only when the dock light comes on can you dock. Positioning is quite tricky. Once the dock light is on go to the bottom panel and the return to ship button will be active.

I have used the EASY MODE myself.

I'm at the station in my srv. Requested, and I'm to "proceed to nearest garage"     is the nearest garage and how do I find it? My ship is dismissed at the moment.

You mean you are at the surface base with docking capabilities, you requested docking via contacts menu and need you find your ship?
Use the small compass thingy to the left from your radar. Solid colour means it's in front of you, hollow icon means it's behind you. If the solid colour dot is right in the centre, it means you're heading to your hangar.

(You can use this thing even for finding the right landing pad when you are landing your ship.)

Regarding the OP:

Great advice and summary for newcomers.

I'll add that when trying to position yourself under the hatch, it doesn't matter from which direction you do it, just do it from the direction where you have the most ground clearance to avoid getting stuck under the ship. Especially small ships on uneven terrain can be a challenge. If you get stuck, dismiss and recall your ship.

Handbrake is your friend. Because the cabin is at the very front of the SRV, you have to seemingly "overshoot" a little, which can be confusing. Just drive slowly and straight under the hatch and once the docking light at the bottom right lights up, hit the handbrake.

Wow - how do people find these old threads to practice their necromancy upon?

I mean seriously, just joined the forum today and first post necros a thread over 3 years old - amazing - welcome to the game, looks like you will fit in just perfectly. ;)

While the new search is great, anything older than 2019 should be treated with great scepticism. Also, unlike many forums, we don't really care about loads of repeat threads.

Well, easy. He can't recall his ship or find the right hangar so he googled the question and then joined to say thank you.
If there's anybody to blame, it's the new stupid forum that unlocked all inactive threads.

Probably found himself in a situation where OP proved "lifesaver" and since he found the solution on the forum joined it to show a token of appreciation

Quite different from my case... my first forum post was to confirm the discovery looping bug that happened in January - it was that annoying

i'M UNDER THE SHIP AND CAN'T GET IN EVEN THOUGH THE LIGHT FOR BOARDIN THE SHIP IS ON ....SO WFT
1) Congrats for the necromancer of the month. Ok, the month is still young, but that's going to be hard to beat.
2) Your capslock key is stuck
3) As long as we don't know what you're doing and what happens (or doesn't happen) exactly, that rant serves little purpose. Give us a little bit to work with. Oh, and if in doubt - I think there's a training mission for the SRV somewhere.

Where is your hold up, what steps have you done and which one is it stuck on. You drive under until you are under the bay, open the SRV menu, when the board whip icon lights up click on it. It's really easy, I can do moving at a fair clip, as you pass under click on the button while still moving and it will grab you, so there's a fair bit of leeway in the process, but unless you tell us where in the process you are failing we can't help. Oh yes, enter the bay the opposite direction of travel you used leaving it, this gets a lot of people!

No need.
If the light is lit, you can be backwards or sideways etc., it doesn't matter, ship picks you.
...and flips you around until you face the right way. If you play in VR and aren't sick yet from tumbling around in the SRV, you will be now .

As long as you're lined with the ship (facing front or rear directly), no flipping around. Any 'misalignment' and the SRV orientation is indeed automatically 'corrected', which ever way is nearer.

There is a situation where even with the boarding light on you cannot actually board - when you have cargo in the SRV and no space in your ship's hold. - Check by selecting Transfer Cargo on the crotch panel. If this is the case you have to dump the SRV cargo.

I am of course assuming that otherwise you are selecting Board Ship on the SRV's crotch (middle) UI panel.

P.S. Your caps lock is stuck on. ;)

Also, you could, if you feel brave, dismiss your ship then recall it, then retry boarding it *

* However, if you're sitting at the bottom of a deep canyon and your ship lands in an place you can't get to... that's a whole new ball game.
