Part of that new ball game is that sometimes the ship doesn’t pay proper attention to where the canyon walls and can destroy it self by repeated collisions, though that is pretty rare nowadays.

I vote for the too much cargo in the SRV to fit in the ship reason for the can’t board issue.

It wasn't just me that recalled Bomba Luigi's epic adventure. (y)

I'm fairly sure the boarding light on the SRV's dashboard wasn't always there. Those days were hell.

Unlikely - there is now a popup asking what cargo you want to discard - it's pretty obvious.

Anyway, to answer the original question - easiest way to get back in the ship from the SRV without having to align (or even recall the ship) is called Self Destruct 😈

The OP contains one inaccuracy: when returning to dock with your ship parked at a surface port, you do not need to remember which specific garage your ship is parked in. Request docking clearance, and you can drive into any garage; your ship will be teleported to the one you drove to.

... and your space compass directs you to the nearest one - well I assume the one it indicated was the nearest.

Even vets struggle from time to time... I just spent a while trying to line up, thinking FD had changed something which meant I was doing it wrong and had to search for tips :p

Stardemon from Australia here. What i found after being away from the game for 4 years and coming back with a clean install, and I went to put the srv back in the ship and there was no way to do it, the light was on to load but unable to press any buttons to get back in the ship
Then i realised that the srv didnt have any mode switches enabled in the options section for number 3 to trigger the command to join the srv back to ship, once the 1,2,3,4 mode switches was added and saved to the controls i was able to trigger the command to load the ship. For new people you will have to get a guide or look on you tube to help with resetting some controls on the srv to make it more easy to use.
but if it doesnt load, check if the mode switches are there :)
