Nothing extraordinary about our local squirrels. Keeps me amused while I work at my desk though

Up until 3 weeks ago we had a family of squirrels that would visit us, and knock on the back door requesting nuts.
For ages, I wondered why our visiting squirrel would sometimes be tame and sometimes be timid until one day all 3 squirrels turned up together!
It wouldn’t be everyday and sometimes my girl friend would worry about them and call them and eventually one of them would come.
Sadly, for 3 weeks, there’s been no sign of them…
Does anyone know the habits of squirrels?
Is it most likely, that my girl friends worst fears are correct and that the squirrels have been eaten by a predator such as a fox or local cat? Or do they go on holiday for a while? (My desperate rationalisation to keep gf happy)
We live in town, uk south coast with wild life consisting of seagulls, sparrows, squirrels, foxes and probably rats.

Squirrels are so quick though!
We will miss them, the Nuts family. Maybe I’ll get a postcard sent to my gf from Miami and pretend it’s from Nuts, but I suspect that’ll just make things worse!

It's a grey squirrel. The are the d-bags of the bunch. The red ones are cute and shy. The grey ones throw their trash into your yard or at you personally when they can get hold of you.
