Base building

I'll share some of my thoughts and ideas.
They're not meant to mean anything serious, just food for thought.

ED is a slowly evolving game. I've seen it grow from the early beginnings since I'm the lifetime expansion pass holder.
Btw. this is how we, LEP holders, look like:

😁 Jokes aside...

I've seen ED go from: Sidewinder and few systems only -> more systems -> more ships and systems -> more ships and complete galaxy -> more game mechanics and stuff to do -> planetary landings -> aliens -> and here we are now....soon "walking around planets and bases".

Would it be insane to expect, or hope for, at some point in time, that they allow us base building?

Just think about it. ED will be, even with Odyssey, a game that we will fire up, fly around, walk around, then close again. Rinse and repeat tomorrow, with nothing crucially changing.

But base building would really connect people to the game on a personal level and add that special level of customization.
It would give us a feeling of owning something that's only ours, built by our hands, in a system of our choice, on a planet of our choice, in a crater, or valley, or mountain of our choice.
Our own space base where we could store our ships and goods.
Invite our friends, have a walk around.
Build fences, lookout towers, turrets, different building blocks.

Maybe in the future, have our ships do automated trading runs that we would program (similar to X series), then watch them leave and approach our base.
Grow a little empire of our own.

Maybe let people collaborate in building the first Space City (not base) on some planet. Have FD create that goal, define the materials needed, let people haul those materials on the predefined site, then watch it grow day by day to a fascinating megalopolis on some planet. And I mean really big megalopolis, with skyscrapers that you can fly around and all...not some tiny base size of an Asp shadow while flying high above. Stuff like that, you know.

It'd make people more interested in game, enrich the ecosystem, get them addicted to the game, make them permanent player base.

There are other games that offer something similar as far as I know, No Mans Sky, Space engineers ?
But they don't look or feel "right" to me.

ED could pull it off with much simpler mechanics than, ie. Space engineers, which goes into too much detail not necessarily required to enjoy base building.
If anyone remembers old space games that introduced base building, I was thinking ED could do it more in line with something that Battlezone (1998) and Uprising (1997) games did.
You have a predefined set of buildings that you can put around your core base building, then use those buildings for whatever.

Back then, devs were limited by computer resources, so the number of available buildings and vehicles was limited, but we don't have that nowadays. Plenty of processing power, it's only up to FD if they want to make it happen and how wide of a building variety they could give us.

Does this make any sense? Anyone wants this beside me ?
😅

Would they be invulnerable or would we have 3am assaults leaving cmdrs to find smoking ruins when they log on which I've seen happen in other MMOs?

The latter seems more likely, going by the persistent carriers and that discussion.

It'd be awesome to have them, but I just see it being a huge minefield to develop, and once announced, it will turn into open letter season from the minority who want things different. FD will need a stronger spine if they go for it.

Something would need to be done about that, yeah...
Like, if your base is on a planet in a crowded system near Sol, chances of someone detecting it are high. Also, there may be other bases on that planet, so how to make them persistent and invulnerable?

In a better scenario, your base may be in a distant system where probability of someone finding it is low to nothing. In such case, there could be a some kind of tower that would camouflage the whole base and make it impossible to see or scan from a ship. The only way for enemy to find it, is to ram into it.

If they add base building, I imagine it would be more akin to a city builder, where players would play around with modular prefabricated buildings and structures. Meaning these could be placed on the surface and connected together, but not have their design altered by a player (good bye phallic buildings ;)). There would be a possibility for interior layout customisation (pick 1 out of x) as well as minor interior/exterior cosmetics (similar to the FCs). This way, a base can end up large enough to resemble a city and at the same time not be so performance heavy (try building a massive base in a game with intricate base building design). And the larger the base, the more it will cost - an excellent credit sink.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Seriously though, I doubt we'll ever get base building but I can see surface asset ownership being a thing (think carriers but static and on a planet). But that's just as controversial here...

I'd love to own a personal base somewhere, personally. Picking a nice secluded location with a killer view would be fun.

Yes, that's what I'm talking about.
Imagine having your own base overlooking a ringed planet and a star setting behind the horizon, while you meet with your friends on the balcony of your apartment.
You can see each other, voip with each other, make gestures, etc.
I reckon good stories could start with such a setting.

I know of one such game...

As long as you don't have to grind rent ala Rust, I am all in for it. FD's penchant for grind "content" and FCs being rented doesn't make me feel comfy though regarding basebuilding . . .

Star wars galaxies managed it quite successfully and I'd guess that had a much higher active playebase in a tiny fraction of the available in-game space.

SOE threw away the best space MMO there has ever been with that stupid NGE profession change, that game had everything. Lets hope Frontier get their own roadmap right.

There should be some way for players to create content, customized stations and planetary bases, maybe even cities, maybe even a player driven economy. Personally, I just want to fly a space ship, so perhaps base building could be a separate game which would tie in with Elite Dangerous? FDev have all the necessary tools an tech already from titles like Planet Zoo.

From what I remember, they did say that base building will be a thing in Odyssey.
They didn't say to what extent however. Looking at the current state of things, I doubt bases would or should be destroyable. That's the reason why I don't play ARX evolved. Just because it's fun for someone else, it might not be fun for me to see my hard work destroyed in minutes while I'm sleeping or at work.

If they managed (kind of sort of) to introduce 'end game' Fleet Carriers, as ships piloted by management rather than flown, they could introduce base building as a kind of 'end game' solution for incredibly wealthy commanders on planets. But maybe when (if) we get most of the other landable atmospheric planet conditions first.

i'd love to see base building. would be nice to have a base on a distant icy planet. maybe some extra modules like miners! also you could add the need to restock water, oxygen and food for the base...endless possibilities...im not too excited about the upcoming FPS elements though..
