To block or not to block... that is the question.

From day one it's been a horrifically thought out system but let's not go there.

For me personally if I'm in open then I 100% subscribe to the notion that I am your content and you are mine, it is after all why I'm in open. If that's positive content then great if it's negative then so long as it's not some salty nobhead then I'm all good and it's gg's.

The bottom line though in ED is that beyond a certain point the only time you die is when you choose to do so.

I wouldn't block a player for destroying my ship, but I would if I discovered they were unfortunate enough to select the absolute worst, most distasteful and outright awful name for their CMDR to tarnish my instance with their presence.

Then again, that means this disgusting list of awful names would have to be stored somewhere on my computer or account, spreading its pungent stench, and so my block list remains empty.

Greetings cmdr's.

Wen a player kills you do u put him on a block list ?

Does it depend on the reason why it happened... like powerplay ?
Or simply a griefer ?

From a roll play point for him you are dead... so it's only normal he won't see you again in the game. Even do blocking is not waterproof.

I wonder what the general opinion amongst the player is... o7

Oh... I forgot to mention... ( i am asking for a friend ) 😇
When I encounter immature kid that talks trash and rams me near a station to provoke my response f.ex - I will block him without thinking twice. That's not kind of game I want to play while in Open.
I will not block a person for just attacking me - I will block people for griefing, especially if they do it in ways that ruin my immersion.

That said, my current block list is empty. I've had some names there, but I've cleaned it few months back.

it's a personal choice.
If you identify that attack as a griefing attempt, guess you will be tempted to block
If you can place that attack within context of the game, then blocking would be the wrong response
Or as you said, you can play what is called reverse iron man and block anyone that kills you - since you are already dead for him... i can understand that, even tho it wont be a playing choice for me.

In the end - while i do advocate that block should be used responsibly - it's strictly the player's choice
And no, sending players to Solo / PG is not a good response either

For example i would not hesitate to block a station rammer or someone who is camping Deciat or Farseer's base and seal-clubs noobs that come by in non-engineered ships.
But i would not do it in a CZ or in a CG station (or in any occurrence where i may consider it legitimate gameplay)

I'm not good at it. And I found just doing heavy attacks works out just as nicely. That said I don't really like the melee combat, I started a run and it's decent enough but not my type of juice.

I've been thinking about starting a new run lately. I thought about going a conjuration/illusion mage but then I realised that's just another variant on a stealth archer.

There's a lot of misinformation about the feature, but usually it's more of p2p coupled with bad connection than the feature itself causing the issue.

That's rather old.
Block has been enforced in patches last year and in this year too...

my google fu is not that strong in me today, so i'm not able to dig through patch notes, but even in the carrier update there were some features added to block feature (as in now you can block players without having to friend them first)

I use block liberally, but nobody on my list has ever killed me. I just don't want to play the game with the sort of folks that snipe newbs on pads or play to simply mess up other folk's days.

So when I see that kinda stuff on forums, streams, yt, etc, I'll just preemptively remove that person from my game with block. Haven't yet had any instancing problems...

are we sure, that it hasn't changed since then?
If you have a fresher link with more recent information of changes, I'd gladly accept at being wrong (wouldn't be the first time).
That said, I don't consider "say so" more valid than an old dev post, as it's p2p and even in 2020 people still play on wifi while blaming the game.

I'm aware of that change, but the only one I could find regarding instancing was the one I linked.

As I said earlier, I'm not an advocate of the block function, unless it's a very clear case of cheating (eg. an invincible beluga blocking the mail slot).

I've not actually blocked anyone (yet) - figure the odds of running in to anyone in particular again are probably slim anway, and I usually go in to Solo if I'm going to visit a hotspot in a ship I've no chance of fighting or running with, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility. Being blown up because someone finds it entertaining to attack easy targets doesn't add to the game and there's zero loss in not running in to them*, so why not block?

* not entirely true since the motivation guessing of that hollow marker and supercruise tactics to try to avoid them can break up the routine, as long as e.g. I've not got a load of data from an exploration trip - I usually sell that at the first station I reach though, and the odds of running in to anyone there are too slim to worry about going to solo for that.
