The first docking (in Premium Beta for me but it was broadly the same as this from what I remember)

When 1984 me finally found out what was inside a coriolis!
This. And it's something I never get tired of.
But also this: my first planetary interaction: taking off from a station, landing on top of a apparently "small" mountain and climbing down to the bottom for 1h.

Rising out of the belly of robigo mines, seeing the gas giant in all its glory, with a cargo hold of slaves on the third or fourth time trying it. Had no idea if i was going to make the high stakes trip having failed it before, but was so damn excited to try.

First time in life i ever had a genuine im han solo experience. Hasn't happened since actually :(

Contraversial and infamous, the Gnosis Incident. Hear me out ..

Explorers lined with battle Corvettes, keen to jump into known alien territory on a hyperdicted megaship! A totally unsurvivable first hour. Ship Service interference, problems on the bridge, "we can't disconnect the automatic defences, it can't tell friend from foe", lawsuits! A contact panel chock full of marauders, echoes of weapons never heard before, battle corvettes exploding before they could get off the pad. Superstructural shudders, klaxons, chaos, sodium chloride and tears of laughter in the garage, what's going on up there? Who's going to go up and take a .. rebuy? (It was bound to end in tears).

Not everyone's high I'm sure but I doubt a larger proportion of the playerbase will ever get a bigger simultaneous xenobiological spanking. And I'm pretty sure I have NEVER laughed so much in a game.

That was the thing about the Gnosis, I missed the news about the miss jump and only logged in on the thursday afternoon, after the cap ship issue was resolved. It was awesome defending that ship, had a real Battlestar Galactica feel to it. Mind you, I turned up with my ful AXI Krait, not my explorer build because when the Eagle Eye network highlighted the system that the Gnosis was in; I knew the bugs were going to go after her.

The whole story about the Cerberus Plague, and how we finally managed to overcome it by cooperating and putting the greater good above individual profit, teabagging rares like crazy to create a cure.

The Planet Wilson incident, when Bomba Luigi got stuck in his SRV on a planet, and the whole rescue operation to get him out of the deep canyon and on top of a mountain to send his rescue signal.

The Epsilon Indi Bourbin CG, when the whole community again worked together and overcame seemingly impossible odds and in the end nearly made Tier 8, missing it by a mere 749 tons (I was at work during the final hours, and wore out my F5 key)

When I put on my VR headset, and then fly my Eagle through a planet's ring, or when I stand on the bridge of my T9 while it autodocks. The whole VR experience is magical actually.

For me it was a few things:

1. Third place for my team B.I.G in season 2 of ED PvP league (pre engineers). My wingman Cmdr Operator 83 at my side. He sadly passed away from Covid 19 few months ago.

2. LP 98-132 Freeport Anarchy PvP during beta and gamma. When bubble was small, there was no salt, no hacks, no engineeres and everyone was learning together.

3. Lugh war of independence. Golden age of PvP pre 1.2. Meeting Cmdr Ragnar Lodebrok in a memorable early morning 2v2.

4. Seeing Cmdr Braben in supercruise early on in the game and not killing him ;)

5. Truckers vs Code big beta blowout ! Cobra's vs Vipers. A truly memorable night of madness.

Hi folks,

For tomorrow night's show, we're taking a break from the usual Odyssey Speculation (Unless we get a bombshell dropped in tomorrow's live stream) and before we all put our feet on the ground, we'd like to ask you all ;-

What has been your best memory (or experience) playing Elite so far?

We'll go through any responses and pull out the best answers with the usual mispronouncing commander names, Ben related tiness and Shan ruthlessness added for good measure!

Cheers

Colin

P.S. As usual any salty, sarcastic and nasty comments will be ignored (Unless they're really funny)
  • I've played on PS4 since it launched.
  • Got impatient waiting for PSVR ("nothing to share at this time") so bought a PC and hooked up my PSVR headset to it.
  • Joined in with Distant Worlds 2.
  • Met up with some random CMDRs after about 18 hours worth of jumps on some planet somewhere out in the Galaxy.
  • SRV-ed in VR and wondered at the scale of canyons, other CMDRs ships and then SLF's. That blew my miiiind.

That's almost impossible to answer as for myself there are many:

The day alpha dropped...and the whole alpha experience...I'm assuming this is one of your best memories as well.
Killing Ben and other while taking on the role of alpha bad boy :D
Having a draw with Cmdr Sam The Destroyer when he took out my weapons and I took out his PD. Only draw I've ever seen in ED.
The day my VR headset arrived...this was absolutely mind blowing, and still is!
The 1st time I was intercepted by a Thargoid and my 1st Thargoid kill
Huge week long running PvP battles in open during wars in core systems that player factions were fighting over
Attacking 4 condas and a FDL in my Vulture and turning one conda into materials floating in space before I had to turn tail and run

I could keep on going as every week something makes me go WOW or causes me to shout expletives to which I hear "Are you ok?" being shouted up the stairs!

There's been a few!

A personal experience, 6 years ago this very month; that 4 week journey of endurance across the galaxy pre-patch 1.0, during the pre-route plotter days, seeing all sorts of wonders for the first time, then finally discovering a path to, and arriving at, the furthest star system a ship of that era could reach. It was an unremarkable system, out on the far fringe of the galaxy, but back then it was a special system due to the journey it took to get there. It later became known as Beagle Point. ;)

A community experience; creating the two Distant Worlds expeditions which retraced that original journey, and I'm sure they'll be experiences none of those who helped organise them will forget, as they brought a lot of fun to a lot of people, and forged friendships that still last to this day. We were very lucky to capture the zeitgeist of exploration for a while there (y)

Experiencing Elite in VR for the first time was another 'wow' moment, and will never be forgotten!

Mine would have been dropping in to a ring system for the first time in the Alpha - I could not believe what FD had produced - fantastic stuff

(seems so normal now, but at the time, after the huge drought of space sims for years... this thrilled me beyond measure!) :)

+1 Yep, that feeling of wonderment at what Fdev were doing was something special.
I also loved those asteroid belts back in the day. First impressions, like you say, were awesome. They were far more densely populated and real navigation hazards when flying through them too!... for a short time.

I've been on a bit of a break since Horizons launched. Logged on to find that Bounties had increased. Got a few creds together and finally bought my Chieftain, as I'd been hanging about in a Vulture for too long. The absolute unbridled joy of not having to manage power too much, and finally an upgrade!
Decided to join in the Marlinist CG for Bounties to grind out enough to grab me an Asp for some exploration. Did very well for me, top 50%, and apparently I am now a salesman for Lakon Spaceways. just as they're about to get nabbed. "Lakon Spaceways - Screw sleek, you're not flying in atmo, anyway"
Edit - forgot that I was doing the last countdown to the goal. If you were in system as the bounty goal was reached, that was me spamming Lakon ads that I'd just made up.

Wasn't it the Truckers vs Code big beta blowout where named PMFs were unveiled? That event stuck in my mind as well.. a hell of a lot of fun
