There are an awful lot of people out there, myself included, who have lost their jobs due to this global pandemic that simply can’t afford to upgrade to a new system.
If FDev decided to bin off “last-gen” consoles in the current global climate they’d lose a substantial chunk of their player base over night.

Dont be selfish, Think about the greater good of elite and the fact that fdev is slow as molasses on new content. We need not anymore hindrances/ bottlenecks or crutches for them to lean on. Times may be rough but the world doesn't stop spinning. As everything over time will become cheaper and more readily available. I'd rather wait on myself instead of them!
I'm in that boat (lost my job due to the pandemic) and a PS4 Pro owner/player. It may be a long time before I'm in a position to buy a PS5.
But I want them to abandon the old consoles and concentrate on the new - especially in light of this delay. What they're basically doing is releasing for underpowered machines a full year after the new consoles are out. If you want to play Odyssey on a PS4 in the autumn - good luck sourcing one new. A PS5 will be much easier to come by.
Not only that, but it means the PC version need not be hamstrung by pandering to 8 year old technology, and it gives the game a future on consoles. Backwards compatibility (on PS5) is not a solution. There's already a bunch of stuff that doesn't work apparently.

I have ED on PS4 too (despite being a primary PC player) and would like to be able to join in Odyssey with that too.
(I could just buy a PS5 once they eventually have stock... it certainly is cheap in comparison to the latest generation of GPU, and money is so easy to raise in real-life /s)
CD Projekt Red have certainly opened a can of worms this year... It appears everyone is going to be tarred with the same brush if their software is going to be delayed even by a day...
Selfish? I’m not the one suggesting Frontier abandon a decent chunk of their player base whom can neither afford nor get their hands on the latest hardware to appease the lucky few that can just so they can have shiner graphics and slightly faster load times.
ED runs perfectly fine and looks great on my 1TB Xbone with the only issues being the occasional connection error or down server, neither of which are console related issues.
FDev have already stated that they have no plans to move onto the new gen consoles yet as it would mean redoing all the hard work they’ve spent on the last few years of Odyssey development.
When the XSX/PS5 are actually fully established as the “current gen” then by all means upgrade and leave the old systems behind but as it stands XSX/PS5s are out of stock basically everywhere unless you’re prepaired to give in to the scalpers flogging them for upwards of £600 on eBay.
I actually applaud Frontier for sticking to their guns and not pooping the bed like a lot of game companies have in the last few months in a desperate attempt to get their products out on the latest platform when they’re already half way through development.

Maybe when Odyssey drops towards the end of the year the new consoles will actually be readily available for purchase by which time Frontier will actually have the free time and resources to work on the Next-Gen version.
But until then the current gen will do just fine as it has done for years.

I’m not a Playststion guy but my brother is and he says he has absolutely no intention of trying to upgrade yet as PS5s are like golddust at the moment.

I get that frontier wants that money but elite is suffering advancement issues bcuz they want more profit which is still understandable. And on the same line of reasoning that trapped cyberpunk. Toasters have impaired progress and greed couldn't let it go!

Well, possibly.
Point is - I doubt they've done any serious work yet on porting for consoles. Just probably told by the devs that it will be challenging - and no wonder. Any game released in 2021 that wasn't designed specifically for PS4/XB1 is going to struggle. As CDPR found out to their cost.
Whether the current consoles are generally available yet or not, whether you have the money to buy one or not, the old consoles are dead and will be completely unobtainable new by the time Odyssey comes out. Meanwhile, PS5s and XBX will be much more easily sourced.

I would just like some communication with fdev on the topic.
There are such a lot of issues that the community has suffered with and waited patiently to have fixed or waited for info on that it’s really been testing a lot of people’s patience and then being told you’ll have to wait over 6 months without a clear breakdown as to why on top of all the other frustrations we’ve just had to bottle for years has led to a deep sense of resentment building up. Which could I might add be relieved a little by some open frank communication. Look how it helped on the situation with VR! Once they came out and said that it was impossible and promised a work around it was much easier to stomach and the anger dissipated.
I would like the 4 main points addressed that I started with but additionally I want to know what the plan is to not split the player base.. there are ways around this and I firmly believe if fdev bring us onboard we can help each other reach solutions or at the very least release some of the frustration that has built up for years of being patient and not receiving helpful info.
A case in point - cargo not ejecting from megaships, just to choose one of the thousands upon thousands in the issue tracker. It has been documented, it has been cited on, it has been raised multiple times on streams and in forums. It has not even been acknowledged and any time a CM has replied it’s “raise it in the issue tracker” well what do you think we did??
Anyway my point is not the cargo ejection or the lag or any individual thing. I want frontier to see that it would be beneficial for both sides if there was a little more flow of communication as to why these things are or aren’t happening.
