Elite Retribution

Anyone else watching Drew Wagar’s Elite Retribution stream on Twitch?
Gotta say, I’m absolutely loving it, he’s bringing some life and character to the galaxy.
I know he used to work with FD on their lore/story, but the devs just lost interest in narrative a long time ago.
Drew is keeping us entertained by creating his storyline using the live mechanics of the game.
Episode 2 has just finished on a bit of a cliff hanger. And I can’t wait for episode 3!

Saw last bit while they were jumping,
You know they (The Devs) brought back galnet? Narratives like way Drew is currently doing is kind like mix of short galnets mixed with short community goals. And anyone could also do that... if they wanted. Instead of deliver to npc for payment of credits, it's donate to get friends / having fun interactions with friends.

It'd be good to be able to initiate these sort of narratives via bulletin boards. Of course you'd need the messages to be generated using a dropdown menu system to prevent the proliferation of profanities. Like "boost my faction x in system y so we can do z", or, "join us in system x to help track down commander y following tragic circumstance z", just a kick-off message to know there's something to join at an appointed time. You can currently do something similar via system chat if you're online, but it's not the place for it really, or as effective.

It would be a wonderful thing in my opinion if Frontier collaborated with Drew to create a single player story-driven campaign set in the Elite universe, and using the current game as the engine.

The same sort of thing that RSI is supposed to be doing with Squadron 42, except that Frontier would actually get it done, and have it released in a reasonable amount of time, particularly in comparison, and even with the expected delays.

I took part in it last night. It was loads of fun, despite some irritating instancing issues*. I'm looking forward to next week's episode. :)

Did you drop off a leathery egg?

Yeah, Galnet’s ok for what it is, but all it is is something to listen to for 5 mins while flying. It’s just a story book that the players have zero impact on. Not a lot we can do about the Fed/Empire summit, or the Alliance election. The story should be within the game as actions, not an after-thought bolt on of words.

^ This. Involve the players in the story!

Not against it.
But something. Something to make us care!

I'm currently reading 'Nemorensis' by a guy called Simon Spurrier - set in the Elite Universe. (Got it for Christmas!)
Been loving Drew's stuff on YouTube, and have to mention a channel called 'MATTIUS' I discovered recently - as far as Lore (and Theory!) goes it's all really good stuff.
I can't get enough of the lore especially when it 'crosses-over' with stuff you can do in-game (Obsidian Ant has some cool older lore videos too!) Good Thread!
@Bottom Hat @Bantha Any specific Drew Wagar book you'd recommend?

Thanks Commander.
I will certainly be checking out Nemorensis and Mattius based on your recommendation.
As for Drew’s novels, my favourite is Reclamation. Really good book.
Premonition is good too, but most people already know the outcome, given that the storyline was already played out in game, and is actually quite notorious.
Still a good book, but you should start with Reclamation anyway, as Premonition is the sequel

I loved both of Drew's books as well. I think I preferred the sequel though, as I didn't think any of the characters in Reclamation were particularly likeable. Salomé develops into a far more interesting character in Premonition. My absolute favourite book of the ones I've read was Allen Stroud's Lave Revolution. I recommend reading it. Gebrial is probably my favourite character in the Elite novels.

Scale is the tricky problem here.

A typical week-long CG gets 5-10,000 people showing up to take part. The collective effort does adjust the outcome (within pre-defined parameters) but obviously any individual's contribution is unlikely to be critical. Equally, if the story was designed to have key roles for individual contributions [1], 99.9% of those interested won't get to make one because someone else gets there first.

You can (collectively) choose the location of the summit with this week's CG pair. Will that matter? Probably a little bit, yes. Will your individual contribution be relevant? Almost certainly not.

What Drew is doing here (and what a few other people have done in-game before) is great on a small scale but doesn't work that big.

[1] I can think of just one occasion on which an individual commander's action significantly changed the direction of the story, and a few more where it changed the timing of a story event but (probably) not the outcome. With ten thousand people somewhat interested, and millions of total players, that's not practical.

Only way players are going to be putting stuff on mission boards is either they (* apply for job at frontier, or buys Frontier development and Elite Dangerous )

Drew just using direct chat, and twitch and twitchchat. And some prerecorded content. With voice-over?

Yes, this.

But it shouldn’t even need to be a player that adds to the narrative. The current missions don’t add anything to the game’s storyline.
Carry this, kill them, bring that... it doesn’t matter.
If the Devs could just put something on there that actually makes a difference...

I love this game, I really do. Favourite game of all time, and I’ve been around a while.

But the opportunities are there, to bring the galaxy to life
