Confused over a Rejection Email

First off - sorry if this is the wrong section to be posting this in, if I'm honest I'm not really familiar with the forums all that much.

Hi - so my squadron recently sent in an application to have a player-made faction created in the game, but the name was rejected (Oktopus Inc) for saying that it was a real-world organization. We could only find a Twitter account that had the same name when we recently searched for it and it was a small screen printing company in Iowa...

The reason I'm confused over the rejection is that there's at least 24 different 'corporation' player made factions and squadrons that we've been able to find so far that are in-game and also have IRL corporations that sometimes match them perfectly, including with websites registered under the same exact name in their URLs and so forth.

Edit: We haven't been able to find anything that has "Oktopod Inc" anywhere on the web, would this work as an alternative to Oktopus Inc? And if so - are we able to apply for the same system again?

Also - when we went to re-apply with a different name to the same star system, now the star system we were applying for is no longer available somehow. Does anyone (especially if there's someone who is actually FDev staff) that could fill us in on what's going on? The player group has grown from 20 to 32 people now and we're all googling our hearts out trying to figure out why we got rejected and can't seem to find any real clear answers. Can anyone help? :)

Just thought it was worth saying that the rules about adding player-named factions, and enforcement of those rules, has changed several times over the years since they were first introduced. You can only work with the rules they're applying now.

It's a good name, made me smile, but there are quite a few companies around the world called Oktopus including an American one called Oktopus Inc ( OKTOPUS INC. - New York Company (newyork-company.com) ). I did find one company called Oktopod but nothing at all for Oktopoid.

With regard to your chosen system, does Elite: Dangerous Database - EDDB show another player-named faction already in there. Perhaps very recently added?

Good luck :)

While I'm happy that yet another silly name faction got rejected, it's disgusting that so many more still manage to get a pass.

Thanks bud! Maybe we'll try reapplying for Oktopoid Enterprises then, that'd be just fine with us tbh.

Which is OK - I don't mind reapplying, but I was just in the system in-game and all the factions are the same, there's no PMF's as far as I can see - as well as checking on eddb and on inara - there's no trace of any player made faction's present in the system we were applying for from what I can tell. No idea why we're suddenly locked out of being able to apply for it :\

The system could be lore-relevant, permit locked, or otherwise special. Could also be full, or have an adopted NPC faction in it. What system was it? (feel free to PM)

I personally don't mind really any faction name or for that matter squadron name I've seen in the game - it's just a video game and a place for people to have fun to me, don't mind what other folks like to call themselves, personally. I'm close to 2,000 (1,901) hours that I've been jamming on Elite over the past 5 years, still haven't seen one I found offensive or obnoxious :)

Thanks for replying! Sent you the PM - never saw anything based off the rules / availability of it. I don't think it's full - and I definitely didn't see any other PMF's in there, was just in the system 10-15 minutes ago, and inara & eddb both say there's no PMF's present.

It may simply be a difference between whether a name is a trademarked name or a generic name. Oktopus may be trademarked and protected, other comany names that are based on more generic words may not be.

Octopoid should be ok because that's a general reference to being octopus like, that can't be trademarked.

Thanks! Not a bad suggestion, I'm totally comfortable with using Octopoid Inc or Oktopoid Inc as our PMF name, still wish I could figure out why the system is locked and unavailable to us after applying since it was available to us on the first time we applied. Don't see any PMF's in there now or anything. It's confuzzling - and a little concerning since we put a LOT of time and effort and thought into picking that one particular system to set up shop in :(

According to D&B (Dun & Bradstreet), Oktopus Inc is an IT Service company base in NY, USA. Real company just as FDev says. Not sure how you didn't find it.

...what's so silly about it?

Intentional misspelling for example. Absolutely everything otherwise.

Might as well start littering in every system and mock the sci-fi setting of Elite with systems controlled by "Loosely Organized Lunatics", or "Portuguese Royal Navy, or "LOST BOYS", or "Quebecois Patriots". Oh wait, it's already happening.

When another new player faction is added, it's like someone installs a new mod to my game. I gnash my teeth when I dock at a station to be greeted with this:

No thanks, I don't want to see that in a game that takes place in 3300s.

Plenty of out of place names already in small factions, if I do a search in EDSM factions I get 4 names with Italian as part of them, the first is out of place in two regards " Italian Battlestar Corporation " So Italian, ok you want to identify your faction as being Italian members, that might be acceptable if there's no other way to do it, but Battlestar? Wrong sci-fi universe I am afraid and is so completely out of place it makes me shudder! I'm really surprises that was allowed in fact!

Portugal does not have a Portuguese Royal Navy. Lost Boys copyright not an issue. Quebecois Patriots refers to the 19th century not in existence today.

When Barrie gave the rights in Peter Pan to the Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in 1928, he wasn’t just giving the play, but the whole concept of Peter Pan, known in legal terms as 'The Peter Pan Gift', which embraces all of Barrie’s writings in which Peter Pan puts in an appearance - e.g. Tommy & Grizel, The Boy Castaways, The Little White Bird, Anon: A Play, Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, Peter & Wendy, etc. When The Lost Boys was made in 1978, GOSH generously accepted a token payment from the BBC since the budget was very tight.

I think 90% of the player base are just people who see this as something to enjoy after a day of work. It's...it's not real life. I don't really care or mind what other player groups call themselves. If it's causing you to gnash your teeth in anguish, maybe take a break from the game for a while bud lol it's not that serious. Again, you're just playing a video game, my friend. :)

It's not a question of copyright or historical relevance but aesthetic compatibility and fitness of these names in Elite universe. Those were just randomly picked examples of factions in control of over a dozen systems. There are far worse examples.

How did you know?

Not in anguish, maybe a little. And I'll figure out when to take a break without somebody else's input on that.

...k, I'm here mostly just looking for input on why the system is now locked after applying for it and hoping to get advice from (hopefully) a dev as to whether or not we can reapply to the same system with a slightly different name (or) if we'll have to reapply to a different system now since it no longer shows itself as available to us. I'm really not sure why you're hanging out on this thread to complain about other people's player faction names, dude.
Sorry it's causing you so much pain to see words you don't like but...this isn't really the best place to haunt to vent those grievances, pal.

If it's not showing as available, then you'll need to pick a different system.

There have been reports (which I've not been able to confirm) that the presence of a Fleet Carrier in a system can make it unavailable, so if you've put one of yours there in anticipation, maybe move it out again and retry, but if that doesn't work, start looking.
