Old Returning Pilot needs your advice

Hi All,

I stopped laying ED when engineers was released. Upto that point i was heavily involved with power play etc and really enjoyed playing the game. The engineers arrived and i lost my love for this game. The grind before was bearable however engineers basically put combat behind a grind wall, which basically meant i had to grind all the engineers to x level to get anything remotely competitive so i wasnt getting ganked every 5 mins by super engineered ships - would like ot point out that im pretty poor combat pilot and died lots but it was fun and there wasn't a case of they having OP weapons that i couldn't get access too because i have a life and family and not alot of time.

However i find my self with some more free time and want to give Ed another crack but im utterly clueless now in how to earn the monies, what engineers are good to grind, how much grind is there etc etc. basically i feel like im a new player accept i have a cutter and a few other assorted ships and some disposable cash.

Any suggestions on what i should do next etc

Oh, one more thing, you may have left BEFORE the material traders came, a in game system where you can trade one mat for another, same with data and manufactured items, so if you have some extra tier 5 its easy to get lots of lower tier stuff stocked up. you will find this under services on the map. You must have visited a system for them to show.

The easier way is to use 3rd party tools to find them all over the bubble

One more thing yet again.... you will find THIS site extremely useful. and not just for engineers, explore it a alot

Regarding material/data traders. If you must engineer, two material 'collections' will get you 1 of the higher level mats i.e. when you collect/scoop one material, you actually get 3. You need 6 to trade up.
Also engineers require only 1 or each of the required materials.
So it isn't that bad

Welcome back cmdr.
If you are looking to make some easy monies then you can always take a shot at mining or shoot something more interesting, combat recently had a bit of a buff so strap on a kill warrant scanner and jump to a high or haz res.
It won't make as much as mining but still clocks about 20/50mil per hour

False if you properly stack wing massacres in certain systems, and clear with full wing you can make upwards of 300 mil an hour. Pure combat. No I'm not going to explain it

Mining is generally still the best way to make money in my opinion but very marmite. Some of my squadron hate it others love it! Wing cargo delivery missions are quite good to. When a system has the right economic standing factions can general 50 million haulage missions than can be done in 1 or 2 trips. You're welcome to message me if you wanna join a squadron thats slowly coming back to game with a range of player abilities who do lots of different things in game. You can earn grade 5 materials from missions and low grade from mining as use traders to trade up and down which saves a lot of time. Community goals also reward engineering now... this weeks goal is giving a full grade 5A fsd away

You bring up a good point about how missions give so many mats now

Also, he may predate when they removed the whole Modular Terminals and other items from the engineering requirements. they never brought it back. made engineering so much easier... as well as they revamped the entire ROLL system to make it easier yet... engineering is a very different beast now

Ok i have a few low level mats i think, does this mean i can trade any 6 low level to get a high level?

I've been doing Robigo mines -> Sothis passenger missions in a Python. Round trip (including selecting and cashing in) takes a hair under 12 minutes. So, five of these per hour. Return ranges from 14 to 28 million a run, so you're averaging over 100 million per hour. Engineering materials are often offered as alternative rewards.

No, they did not make it that easy. he meant 6 tier 5 mats for 1 tier 5 different mat

But.. you can get 3 tier 4 mats for one tier 5 in the same line

or.. 9 tier 3 for one tier 5

or 27 tier 1 for one tier 5

its its own mini game, its useful if you have lots of one and not enough of another.

If you surface scan a planet, you will now find the geyser locations, you can fly down to one and find tier 5 polonium or yttrium relatively easy now with a SRV... then trade tier 5s to fill out all others

Its not false. I never stated it was the best way to profit from combat, I just suggested something that has improved since he last flew.

Just take your time, nearly all my mats are filled to the brim.

Do missions, you will get 3 to 5 exquisite crystals or modified embedded firm ware for each mission, then you can trade the extra

you can NOW CHOOSE your reward... so take the data for a bit less cash

every rock you pick up gives you 3 mats, used to be 1

each wake echo you scan gives you 3 data, used to be 1

take your time.

even if you only unlock tier 3 for all engineers you are light years better off

Hey dude

You defo can trade one level up, with 6 for 1.

If you click on the link and skip to 4:30 you see that I trade up six grade 3 mats for one grade 4 of the same category. Which in effort's sake means one needs to scoop/scan 2 lower level mats (each collection nets you 3 of the mat, so 2 * 3) in order to trade up for one mat of the single level higher.

Yes

Yes you are correct.
