Considering starting over: Need some questions answered.

I have the Lifetime Expansion Pass and am eagerly awaiting Odyssey like most of us, but I've been away from Elite Dangerous for over a year. Partly because I reached a comfortable point of achievement. While I'm not triple Elite, I'm close, and my Krait is kitted out and engineered to the gills. It got to the point where my only reason for playing was exploration, which is fine, but I miss those early days of building things up and achieving things.

But with Odyssey, I see an opportunity to start over, create a new personal story (one that doesn't even start with me owning a ship!) and working my way back up.

So I'm considering starting over, wiping my save, but I need to know a few things first:

1) What stays with you regardless of starting over? I assume stuff like your ship kits, paint jobs, decals, etc... are all going to carry over.
2) Does your saved Holo-Me profiles carry over? If not, is there a way to save them and import them back (took me a long time to make mine)
3) Do achievements like First Discovered by on the system map remain intact or are they wiped?

Anything else I should know?

You can restart and keep your character/Holo-Me and name, just losing your in-game progress. I haven’t checked my first discoveries on the account I restarted (keeping the same character) as none were very special. All of my purchases remain as well as the earned decals - in my case it was the Distant Worlds 2 decal, I can’t say that’s definitely the case with any CG decal rewards if you have any.

You can also, obviously, clear it completely and start a whole new character.

1 - Whatever you have bought or been awarded in things like CGs, livestreams, twitch drops etc - not Elite rank decals, got to earn them again.

2 - The holo-me is not saved on a clear-save*, you are effectively creating a new commander (even when using the same name) so you need to create new avatars.

3 - They stay, show the original commander name not any new name you create.

* I see @Rock Hunter's remark saying you keep the holo-me - I have always found I needed to create a new one (and I played iron-man for years so did a lot of these clear-saves) - if it has changed then it must have happened very, very recently.

Here is some good advice.

Consider a new account - the game isn't expensive - then you don't have to wipe your save. I wiped mine, because I wasn't too far into the game anyway, but in your case it would be sad to just wipe it out of existance.

First discoveries are linked to the CMDR that discovered them first. A new CMDR is a new CMDR, with no discoveries at all.
hm, it is the question if this is true if you get the same name for the new CMDR - this is possible, I wiped my save and took the same name again.

3 - They stay, show the original commander name not any new name you create.
So if anyone can confirm whether or not clear saves wipe out holo-me or not (since there's two different stories here) that would be great :)

Also, when you clear your save can you choose the same commander name as before?
Edit: seems Lysette answered that one. Thanks!

I have a free Epic account for Horizons, but I bought the Lifetime Expansion pass for a reason. Buying again and again after that seems to miss the point.

Yeah, I thought about that too - still, consider it - it is just a few bucks to pay - and you won't regret having wiped your save - it might be worth it.

You see, starting over is nice to a certain point - until the massive grind starts ... and then you might get tired of it and wish for still having your old CMDR - just consider that as well. The game gets very grindy at a certain point, where it is not fun to get through this phase - you can avoid that.

The discoveries still belong to the last CMDR that had that name.

Though, technically they would be easier for you to find.

If discoveries are an issue for you - then don't wipe your save - there is new landfall gameplay, where you get your name on planets outside of the bubble, when you are the first setting foot on them - you can do that much better with your current CMDR. Well, ok it isn't that hard to have a decent DBX in nearly no time, but still.

Haven't myself this problem, but is it not possible to sell Krait etc. and donate all credits to some factions?
not a bad idea either - the grind to get to the engineers is avoided by this. But it isn't the same in regards to payouts - they will still be much higher and less for discoveries inside the bubble. And he will most likely be considered an elite pilot and encounter much harsher enemies in his meager ships.

Maybe, but I doubt it.

While this is a multiplayer game and there is some wang measuring in terms of keeping up with the Jones, to me the journey was always a personal one. I mean, I restarted games in the original Elite or Frontier for that experience of building back up.

Yeah, I've done soft resets before, selling off everything, dumping the cash and starting from sidewinder. But the ranks and engineer access does give you a major leg up that way. I honestly don't mind working my way up from nothing, I just want to know if my discoveries will remain (in that I'll want to use the same CMDR name), if I can keep my Holo-me (or if I can otherwise export and import it) portrait, and if there is anything else that carries over during the clear save.

But you know most likely, that it won't be the same experience - because there is no wonder nor miracle anymore, you know this kind of stuff already. So you will experience the grindy parts of it a lot less enjoyable than they were the first time, where you were curious about where it will lead you - you know now, where it will lead you and so the grind feels much more cumbersome than before.

Possible, but I'm hoping Odyssey's gameplay will keep that element fresh. :)

Well, if that is all not bothering you - then make a clear cut - don't worry about your former discoveries, that was another CMDR, not you anymore. Start out as a blank sheet with no history whatsoever. New name, new holo-me - a clear cut with the past. You can still use the same forum account though.

i in your place would still go for a new account - those few bucks will save you from being sorry later on.

And for a really fresh experience, don't tell your friends - you have no friends yet, you are a new player who will make his own friends.
