Odyssey Progress (2)

We had a similar thought process for Odyssey, especially considering that the lower spec machines will tend to be five years old or more, or be laptops, that 30 fps would be acceptable as a minimum spec performance
You are mistaken. Plus you lied when you said the system requirements would not change. Now we, the players, are waiting for the same optimization from Odyssey. You put yourself in an awkward position. The graphics in Odyssey are worse than in Horizons. Many do not see the fundamental difference (except for the numbers on the FPS counter). Were these changes necessary? Just to satisfy your huge ambitions.

Thanks for the update and details! It helps to hear the how's and why's. Just wanted to repeat the concern about repeating planet texture elements and the need for varied and unique planets. In addition to fixing the repeating planet elements problem, maybe program the stellar forge to ignore the laws of physics on one out of every 200 planets, just to keep things interesting!

Thanks for this information.
Hopefully everything will be sorted soon.
I'm really enjoying the experience so far!

It is not fair to name the carriers as a reason for poor stability. They were pretty much rushed and pushed aside just for the sake of moving more resources towards the development of odyssey. Heck, even the odyssey trailer was "leaked" as the carriers were releasing, as if the team wanted to get rid of them and just work on odyssey. It is like adding knowingly a faulty, unrefined ring to the chain and carrying on, but, now, when the chain snaps and things fall apart, that ring is taking the blame.
Did you actually read it? It was how the Fleet Carriers reacted in the Horizons v Odyssey gameworld split that caused the issues, I doubt anyone would have been able to forsee that back in 2019/2020

The graphics are worse than in Horizons, because Odyssey currently doesn't work how it should be. We can only really judge once the biggest issues are ironed out.

Thanks David for the update.
I am sure things are going to be sorted out and hope this happens quickly.
I like the possibilities osyssey is making possible.

Please keep us informed about ongoing work. ;-)

Thanks David for the detailed update, much appreciated.

I am really loving and enjoying Odyssey so please pass on my thanks to everyone involved for all the hard work done and continuing to do on Odyssey.

This is at least the third time you've made a comment like this that implies that performance issues on high-spec machines are some kind of mystery. It isn't a mystery. The community already dug into the rendering and found that the game is not doing basic optimization work that nearly all games do as a rule. If you had to push this work to post-launch, just say that you had to choose between delaying again or releasing an unoptimized product. This kind of language is going to make people think that they need to upgrade their PCs in order to get better performance, but even with some of the best hardware on the market, they will get maybe 10-15 frames per second better performance in the really bad areas like conflict zones. Are you really going to encourage people to try to buy a new GPU during the worst semiconductor shortage in history just to avoid admitting that the optimizations aren't finished? You should be more transparent about the reasons for the performance of the current release so that people won't go upgrading things unnecessarily.

I was a little worried when not much was being said yesterday - I expected that it would be very much all hands to the pump dealing with the most critical issues but I was expecting a bit more than the hotfix announcement. I assumed a fuller statement was forthcoming and it was.

There's a lot to appreciate in Odyssey, and it's clear that many parts have had a great deal of care put into them - the sheer variety of exobiology on offer and details like engineers being represented in their stations and things like that. Overall though, I still get the impression that time pressure just got greater and greater as release approached. Things like route plotting not working properly, and the various materials issues, speak of something being assembled in a dreadful hurry, whatever might be wrong with it, in the final stages.

I had no timeframe of my own for EDO and would have happily waited extra months to avoid some of the issues we're seeing. Optimisation and server issues are, to a certain extent, inescapable, but some of the less deep problems are ones that you would hope wouldn't drop up in more than ones or twos per release.

As long as you're not getting people to crunch to get things fixed, carry on. I look forward to seeing improvements as and when they come.
