A graphic engineer found the cause of low FPS: rendering/culling

Hm ..then something is broken, because when I set 540p resolution doing 2x SS, I get 1080p final image :D

It should be rendering 1080p internally, but if your output resolution is 540p it's still going to look like crap because it's a 1080p image that has been downscaled to 540p.

Supersampling changes the rendering resolution, and then the image is adapted to the native resolution, so downsampling means less work for the rendering (i know because i have to downsample to get reasonable fps in settlements with odyssey)

edit: i'm probably using wrong terms here. what i meant for downsampling here, was to set supersampling to lower than 1, which it's probably formally wrong because the rendered image is then upscaled

The description is largely accurate, though technically, supersampling below one is upscaling.

And this is the major difference between the pitchforks for CP2077 and Elite. CP2077 ran like dog too, but at least for people with RT cores, they had DLSS which saved the day :D

See edit - you may not be able to see a difference, but if you were to compare the images side-by-side, the upscaled 540 SS2 will be blurrier than the native 1080 SS1. If you're happy with the trade-off between FPS and Image quality, then that's what matters!
However in this way he should have a worse quality image at the same fps of a full 1080p render... (or worse, since the additional work)
edit: Unless i got it wrong and he isn't actually supersampling

Thing is, I highly suspect AA is broken too, at least SMAA is, because my planetary lines are all jaggies :\ So they might not see the degradation, but it should be so, yes.

Most gamers in America (except Elite fanatics like myself) have never even heard of Frontier. Well, until now that Odyssey went from the top of Steam's promotional page to a mostly-negative rated game in just a couple of days.

Though I suppose "exceptional" doesn't always mean "good", so maybe you're right!
Man.. I checked again. At 30% positive reviews now. Ouchies.

Yes, the image will be objectively worse, the important bit is; from a subjective point of view, is it good enough to justify the trade between lower image quality and higher performance.

But he wouldn't have better performance if he's actually supersampling 2x

Good, Frontier as a company deserves it. I just hope the appropriate people at Frontier bear the heat from this, rather than scapegoating talented, hard-working developers who had neither the tools nor time to bring their vision to reality. This is a failure of leadership.
There's always some big wig trying to impress investors with quarterly earnings reports, forcing the devs to push things out years before they're ready. Same happened to Cyberpunk, lol. They said 2022 at the earliest, shareholders said no, do it now.

Yeah, I love writing software, but I ended up hating working in the industry. These days I just write programs for my own enjoyment - the only person holding my shares is me.

But to your point, isn't Braben the boss? I mean, shareholders can say all they want, but AFAIK he still calls the shots. Jeff Bezos ticked off his shareholders for years when Amazon was still young, because he invested back into the company rather than turn a profit. Turns out he was right all along. So if Braben is kowtowing to shareholders, that just means he's a weak leader, unless I'm missing something (Dammit Jim, I'm a programmer not a businessman!)

We don't know what was the other choice

Dr. Kay Ross said something like this in the video that reassured many (me included) before launch.
It's propably not a switch, but something something occlusion culling turned off mumble no optimization in Alpha*

* I'm no software guy.
I am a software guy, this "no optimization in Alpha*" is a suttle dig at someone. She is saying if the software was released without optimisation when it should have been then it aint my fault, don't point the finger of blame at me. And I do not blame her, it is the managements fault, if they are pressuring their developers to get the software out, the developers would have winced knowing/suspecting that the outcome was not going to be pretty. Unfortuneately, this was probably a delay too much for the managers so they would have been wearing their level 40, "full blinkers to the truth" armour.

I have no regrets purchasing Odyssey though, I am in it for the long term plus I think I have already got far more than my moneys worth for Elite Dangerous and the Horizons expansion considering the thousand of hours I have put into the game.

I'm wondering again if they aware of this since they are asking technical specifications (yeah i know that they are still usefull)

I love reading claims like this.. We, the shareholders of Fdev were not consulted about the release date, not did we push for it to release. You've got not one iota of proof to back your claims, but are more than happy to throw the shareholders under the bus. This was a management decision, not something that we shareholders get involved in.

Sounds like the sort sort of thing a shareholder that pushed for early release would say!

Lynch 'em!

;)

There's no way they aren't aware of this. This is really basic stuff. They'd have to be completely and totally incompetent/clueless to not be aware of this.

The DXDiag dump includes a lot more than just the tech specs, and includes driver details that could help identify funky compatability issues.

A bit defensive. Alright, I suppose I'll bite. I wasn't talking about Frontier here, I was talking about Cyberpunk. Also, I said big wig looking to impress investors, not shareholders being upset, if you think the first part was directed at you somehow. Management. We said the same thing, yet you got mad at me. Shareholders was referring to Cyberpunk. I would also like to add that CDPR's majority holders are their own management. Also I suppose I'll return in kind, any proof you're a bigshot with majority in the company? If so, what are you doing in a place like this?
