Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

So you mean it's giving you an option to download from Steam when you are not a Steam user?
No, I am on Steam. But I had already done the 'upgrade' this morning. Game was working. Then it asked for a download a few hours later, which failed after it was fully downloaded. So I had to re-do it again. I have no idea.

Anyway, its working now and GAAAWDSS, I remember why I hated Guardian Sites so much. On my way back from Rackham's, decided to drop by and finish off getting my first Guardian fighter (only missing the blueprint).

Again, I feel like puking.

I'm not sure what they did to the settlements, but I'm getting a lot of building parts flickering in and out of existence as I move. Something is haywire. Anyone else seeing it too?

Anyway, I visited a couple of interesting-looking planets that had atmospheres, because I wanted to see what they looked like on the ground. I was rather disappointed.

The sky and planets look very good when you're up high. This was an ammonia atmosphere.

As you get closer to the surface however, the planet starts to look weird and mottled, and unnaturally reflective. The textures are almost nonexistent -- just smooth brownness everywhere. This one had an argon atmosphere.

I didn't even bother to take any screenshots from the surface on foot. It looked so terrible, I just didn't. :)

Man I really hope that this isn't intended.

When to investigate an 'artificial structure' since i was mucking around my first footfall planet.

Skimmer and 4 turrets, took em all out with ship weaponry. Went out in the SRV and maverick suit, only 1 low end material on the ground and 1 data from scanning the datalink. Nothing to do on foot. How do we tell from the signal's if a ground signal is a Horizon or a proper Odyssey location with Odyssey loot?

Went back to the ship and the lighting started to change, ah sun if coming up. Decided to watch the sunrise from the cockpit of my DBX and see the site in the morning sun. As I went to pour a drink, the damn turrets suddenly all went back to 100% health and started shooting at my DBX! what!!! Made it out with 52% hull.

I think I'm getting myself in a confused state of circular thought.

The suit cosmetics I bought (~6,200 ARX) are not showing up anywhere as far as I can see. Is there a place I can check what my last ARX purchase was? I think I may need to raise a ticket.

EDIT Found the suit pack I bought - Wanderer. Trouble is, it just doesn't show up suit customisation in loadouts.😰😵

So far, I have found that Artificial Structure is always Horizons, whereas Irregular Markers, Crash Site, Impact Site, Distress Signal are all Odyssey. There may be others I've not encountered, or maybe they are not always consistent, but that's my best guess right now :)

I tried some irregular markers, its always the 2 containers and some boxes outside. They ranged from threat 2 to 3. According to the wiki, there are supposed to be NPCs spawning. But all those I visited had no NPCs at all. Not sure if it was changed or my instances are buggy.

At least one of the Distress Signal's I visted felt like a Horizons site, there were only occupied escape pods there and nothing else from the wreckage or panels to cut.

You know, we always want Elite to be more sim-my and micromanage-y but I am so glad we don't have to take our ships and vehicles to an anual service checkup otherwise we lose the insurance.
Yes :D And having to remember to renew the tax and insurance each year!

I recall that “Frontier: Elite II” had the concept of wear-and-tear on ships, and they had to be overhauled every so often, or things would start breaking down on them :) It was the jump-drives, if memory serves.

Greetings!

I decided to make my first trips inside the bubble in open, taking my G5 engineered Cutter just to see what happens.

I went to Shinrarta and I noted just 2 or 3 other CMDRs, mostly at Jameson Memorial. No ganks and no interdictions. I saw a Corvette, a FDL and an Anaconda.

I also went to Deciat, with the knowledge that there was a notorious ganker lurking in an FDL and in a wing, and who was on the hunt. I arrived there and yes, there s/he was in my scanner. For some reason, s/he left me alone and did not make an effort to place him/herself behind my Cutter. Seriously-the comms was full of chatter that indicated that the gankers were there.

When I left Farseer in another occasion, there was a CMDR in an FDL but left me alone.

In another occasion, I noted a Python and several other ships hovering inside the station near the airlock at Shinrarta, pointing toward the exit.

I also went to check the current CG at the system that is asking for combat vouchers. As soon as I entered I saw a CMDR in an Adder, but for some reason s/he became “contact lost” soon after I entered the system.

True, if winning is the metric. But I can definitely appreciate elegance and creativity, too. There's a guy who calls himself StealthGamerBR on YouTube that I watch from time to time. He does these amazing little play-throughs in which he demonstrates those qualities in abundance. Plus humor.

I don't know if you play Dishonored at all. I love that series. I've played it so much I've become actually masterful at it. I play on the hardest difficulty nowadays, and it's no problem for me. I get it done. But then I watch him play it and I realize that I have no creativity at all in comparison, and my hand-eye coordination is primitive compared to his. It's a joy to watch him :)
Famously this is the only game I play.

This is in the game after a fashion - your ship needs to be overhauled every so often as its integrity reduces whilst travelling in supercruise. You can see where to do this at the top of the Repair screen in advanced maintenance. You don't get failures when it is right down but your ship is more susceptible to inflicted damage.

A long time ago this repair cost was so high that people just blew their ships up as the rebuy was a tiny fraction of the overhaul cost.

Ah yes, I’d forgotten about that! I fix it almost as a reflex when I land when in the bubble. When I had been out exploring for over 12 months, my AspX was down to single figures and had very little paint left on it when I finally made it into the bubble again.

I counter your bad screenshots with some beautiful ones. This is on UltraForCapture! I had to scale these down as they are high-quality originals. They are scaled down to 10% of the original quality!

So, the ones that look bad come off to me as NOT intended and a rendering issue. If you saw the original screenshots I have here, you'd be very happy!
