The AAA tag is meaningless these days. Tarkov is the next big thing that's on the rise, it's a flawed comparison. I would agree that it would have been great to see Odyssey become the next big thing but there was no expectation of it in my mind whatsoever, which is why I think the comparison is flawed.
What about Scam Citizen?
lol, I don't know. I think streaming / let's plays of it have the opposite effect on me. I literally was at the download page on one of the free weekends but checked someone playing it first, I did not bother after that..
now this makes me wonder what they watch with EVE - is there something to watch?- it is an awesome game to play, but to watch - I don't know, must be like watching paint dry.
Ok, maybe it is just me, i fly extremely fast stealth ships, doing about 30 jumps in 11 minutes, so everything is just flying by and my ship is normally cloaked, I see it for a second before I'm in warp a second or two later.

I agree. Never liked streamers, find them annoying. I want to PLAY, not watch someone who thinks I want to see them play a game, and thinks they are good at it.
Why Elite Week, they have like 1600 subscribers? Exagious and OA have made it quite clear what they presently think of ED and Obsidian makes videos on many other games now. He apparently sees the writing on the wall and is slowly moving his followers onto other games as well as increasing his viewers.
It has a huge audience of people who didn't play it yet, myself included. I tried to watch it sometime ago, a few times, but usually got only some dudes talking on camera, and the fabulous action-packed trailers nowhere to be seen

Huh? Obsidian Ant has been making videos on many other games since his channel began in 2014. He's covered around 150 games now
Obsidian Ant is covering the whole genre, not just ED - he had videos about other space games before as well.

Happens every time the topic of streamers comes up. Some old dude comes in with their whole "I've never heard of these people/ what a waste of time/ what you like is dumb/ how can you like x and y"- shtick.
On topic: I don't personally watch streams but I like their guide contents rather than watching them play. It is very handy for a game that does very little to inform you of its mechanics. I did see last night though that a YouTuber by the name 'ThePilot' seems to have quit which sucks. I liked his ship reviews. They were done very excellently with some comedic quips, useful information and really nice b-roll.
Also there's 947 people watching Microsoft Flight Simulator as I type this.
As you say, some games are far less interesting to watch than others.
It's a bit like how you could stand behind someone playing an arcade game in the 80's and sort of enjoy it ...but watching your sibling play Elite or Railroad Tycoon or a text adventure was dull. Twitch has sort of replaced the arcade and the games that people watch have much to do with the type of game as much as popularity.
You are well aware those other games he randomly covered were not his bread and butter. I get more YouTube suggestions for OA for MSFS2020 now.
Well tbh he started with Elite, but as the drought made content few and far between he then moved to other genres.
As for "why should I watch someone else play":
Exactly this. I also used to think why should I watch someone else play, but it's engagement with the community and the personality of the person streaming that makes you return. It's like a radio show about your favourite game, with like-minded people on the chat. I only discovered it after I started using Twitch as a means to share VR gameplay for friends playing with me (replays) and started to use the service more.
