A possible way to inspire people to play in Open

same here. i tried eve once, wanted to become a miner and crafter.
as soon as i stepped out of the noobzone...i was blow up. my first jump into an unprotected system, and i lost everything. never touched the game ever since.
Oh my, how do you guys play EVE - i guess you were using auto-pilot, which is like "please, gank me, I'm too lazy to warp to 0 and immediately jump". Another thing, there are no protected systems in EVE - CONCORD will come in highsec and destroy the criminal offender, but you shouldn't see this as being protected - you are not, those ganking you will most likely have killed you before CONCORD will arrive. You are just safe, if you can stand the fire until CONCORD will shoot them out of their ships.

As far as lowsec goes - yes you will most likely get killed there with your newbie ship - but on the other side, that is a great time to go there, because you are loosing nothing really, you'll get a new newbie ship at any station where you haven't a ship, when you dock there in your capsule. Otherwise, if not using a newbie ship, the rule is, don't fly a ship you can't afford to loose - and never ever use auto-pilot ever - that gets you easily killed, because you drop out of warp 15km away from the gate and you let others all the time in the world to scan you and if they are bored they will eventually even kill you, even if you have like nothing on board - a kill is a kill for them.

EVE isn't really dangerous if you know what you are doing actually - as a miner you would have probably met the guys from Code and they would have made your life miserable. Mining is not just being afk and raking in money - there are pesky aliens now as well disturbing the peace. All not a problem, but it requires to learn how to deal with them,

The key word was unarmed ship...

PvP is still very much a thing, but you can't kill an unarmed cmdr.

I don't think this is the right approach but I do think something should be done. I am definitely a player who plays in Solo because of Gankers. I always see people on forums and reddit say people who complain about gankers in Open are over exaggerating or guilty of making "paper" ship builds. I always hear "it doesn't even happen that often" or "You just need to learn how to deal with them". While I understand that gankers may be part of the emergent gameplay Frontier intended, I feel like if there truly is a large portion of the player base playing in solo because of them then something should be done about them. I actually want to play in open. I want to be able to have dynamic encounters with people. I've been playing this game since 2016, and every time I've tried to play in open I quickly switch back because I always get ganked by some rando player. The reason I don't want to "get over it" or "get used to it" is because I do not have time to waste. I like many others I suspect, only have so much time in a week to devote to this game. And in a game where it can take you over an hour to complete just a few missions (obviously depending on the missions you do and your playstyle) it can be incredibly demoralizing losing all that progress simply because some a-hole just can't resist to show off how much of a pro G A M E R they are. Simply put I don't have time for all that. And I think there are plenty of ways frontier could make it so players like me can play in open and reduce the risk to us. Take Fallout 76 for example. You can still be grieffed by a random player but unless you fight back it's going to be very difficult for them to actually kill you. Or maybe something like Red Dead Redemption 2 online, where you can set yourself in a "defensive" status so long as you're not going out and attacking others yourself. So I do hope they do something, because it seems dumb to have this MMO game feel so empty for so many players. The fact that they even have the option for Solo and private play says they recognize that players don't want to deal with PVP. I don't know what the exact solution is, but I definitely think it's worth exploring.

I for one feel that the less “nanny” game mechanics the better. Give people means to defend themselves and implement a C&P system that make sense and is fair, and leave the rest to game mechanics.

None of these ridiculous “act of god” account wipes or whatever if you engage in PvP.

if you haven't enough time to play, you can't compete with these guys ever -- don't even try. You might eventually be able to get away, but that's it - so think twice before playing in open, if you really want having to deal with this. Playing there and think that it could be peaceful is like jumping into a shark tank thinking "they might not be hungry" - they are freaking sharks they will tear you to pieces and so are gankers - they do it because that is what they do.

Imagine all the people not underclassing their shield generators
You may say I'm a dreamer...

It's a simple idea that could easily be implemented with the existing mechanics, as they appear to work. Since most of the people who play in solo do so to avoid pirates and gankers, the only way to lure people out of solo is to drastically reduce the risk of encountering those types. And I think you could do that by instituting a "death penalty" for anyone who attacks an unarmed ship. Basically, attack an unarmed ship and your commander is erased as if you had hit the menu option yourself. All your ships, all your money, all your ranks-- gone. Enjoy your new Sidewinder!
I detect a hint of sarcasm in your post but on the off-chance you are being serious - No, your suggestion, if implemented would not encourage me to play in open mode any more often. When I play in solo, its because I don't want to interact with other people at all - I don't care if they are friendly or want to shoot me, I simply don't want to know they are there!

People DO play in whatever mode they fancy. And this drives the wack-jobs who want more TARGETS in Open crazy. I love it. (y)
Unrelated, but you can use the local chat, even if you are in solo, and people in open can read it. For example, in Deciat to speak to potential gankers.
Just a random example. It can be useful to know, should you run out of salt. Just be sure to mention you are in solo, that's the important part.

I agree. Cruising around Open with Sys chat open has filled up my salt storage in literally seconds at times.
