Again; a request for a light offline mode and other things related with Odyssey

Hello to all. I wanted to start with a simple request to FDEV. Would it be possible to release, an offline (independent) mode; a simple, small 'micro' bubble?
I think that it would greatly enhance the lone player experience and let us still play, when without of internet access or having connection issues.

Regarding the new engineers; I simply can't believe this. 40 OPINION POLLS, to unlock a simple engineer? I have no words for this one. Am I supposed to embrace this idea and collect this items amount, with enjoyment while playing?

Doesn't this one look more appropriate and acceptable?
Engineers 1/2/3 > 5 items | Engineers 4/5/6 > 10 items | Engineers 7/8/9 > 20 items

For last, a strange AI behavior. Let's suppose that I am a friend/ally of a faction... when I land at a space station controlled by this faction, I am greeted by the ATC and politely vectored, to the landing pad.
Do I receive the same behavior, at a land based installation of that faction? No; I can be friend/ally and everyone at the base behaves aggressively and impolite. This does not look as a rational behavior.

Kind regards to all,
Me

I know of a game or two....

The game wouldn't work in single player (offline) without a major code re-write (and probably a re-design). There would be no BGS and everything would feel dull and lifeless.
It's rubbish about the BGS not working, there are plenty of games that have political systems that use AI, an offline version would work just fine especially with the very few and very basic ways that actual players get to interact with it, you really think we can't be replaced with AI pilots running goods, murdering ships etc?

Hi. I understand what you mean, but if possible; a little something would be better than nothing...

Maybe exchanging the demo, for a freezed BGS, on a bubble with 50 LY only? I wouldn't mind having only one star system... SOL?

Regards

The Iliad: Demo/Offline nano bubble... what a great DLC, this one would be, for Elite! 🚀

Pretty much this. As far as I know, they originally intended for the solo mode to be offline (or at least to have an offline version) and then as they progressed with game design, they realized that they couldn't deliver the same experience in an offline mode, hence the always online model we have now. Sometimes an idea is great until you actually try to do it and realize it either won't work as intended or is just way too impractical, requiring more work than its worth for the result.

While we're at it, the same goes with other things that Braben said "it would be nice if we could" or "we would like to do this" that people keep pointing to and crying "but they promised!" when in reality all he did is list ideas they thought would be cool at the time. I've never once seen anything where he actually promised anything.

Maybe the Braben didn't promise. But he was selling pretty hard when he was saying, "You will be able to get out of your seat and walk around your ship... we are designing everything from the start with this in mind... blah, blah lots of neat gameplay ideas stated... gas giants with blah, blah cool stuff.. " and etc. There were multiple videos of this stuff and not only is it all still up on official channels, it was re-enforced over multiple years and newsletter articles (with the caveat they needed more time and money). And it has never been retracted or modified or updated. indeed I bet you David Braben would say "damage models are in" and may not be aware they are a pale shadow of what he described and only on a single ship at that.

FD Comms were great during the run-up to V1.0 and have gone downhill ever since, with a bit of up and down to the blackout after Beyond updates. If all the "You Will Be Able To" statements have indeed changed, then David Braben should give an update to the players about what and why. They sold LEPs on the concept that all these cool features were the core target for development.

Yes, and for those around at the time when offline mode was something discussed it was made clear at the time that it wasn't going to happen, although they did say if the were going to shut the game down they would make it available for offline play (which I doubt). After KS and the company going public the shareholders became the most important and communication became poor.

I think people just like to pretend that the BGS is super complicated to give Frontier yet another excuse for delivering mediocre releases. It's actually a pretty neat system - but it's not some crazy super complicated thing. I can think of many, many games that simulate more complex things in the background (many paradox grand strategy games for example)

Pretty good overview of the BGS here:

They would have to rewrite the game for that is what he said.
Not gonna happen.
If you like doing one thing over and over, there is always SC.

It's complicated in size, not scope. There are literally hundreds of thousands of systems / subsystems (individual stations and outposts) that have BGS data tied to them. It's also 100% reliant on player input IIRC. What good is a MMO BGS if only one single player has input on the game? Faction states, commodity prices, wars, etc would have little meaning in an offline single-player game using the current BGS algorithms.

Good morning. Wouldn't a mini bubble (50 LY) work offline? Maybe only one star system; just to have fun and test new things (also VR), relaxing from the online part of the game.

Everyone received a like, from me. My topic was not intended, to generate any controversy; so, please, commanders stop the 'heat exchange' and get along.

I do not want to give no one a big fine and apreend your ship :)

Stay well and healthy

For it to be meaningful, you'd have to code some AI to replace player interactions with the BGS. This doesn't necessarily mean coding actual NPC ships like X4. It could be a "simple" database manipulation code that changes the BGS in a way that logically mimics how players would interact with the BGS. As I said in another thread, writing the code to procedurally generate a planet is WAY out of my league, but I could easily write a BGS automation script given the APIs. If I can do it, so can people much smarter than I.

Still, I doubt Frontier will do this. They took a serious hit back when they first decided to abort their offline single-player aspirations during the Kickstarter, and that's when making these changes would have been "easy". So what would make them do it now?

I keep learning a new thing, everyday. Thank you for taking the time and write a easy to understand explanation. Cheers.
