Please commit to rerolling the planets...

...It has been stated on stream that FD want to avoid rerolling the planets. This thread's purpose is to encourage a wave of voices to cry 'please reroll the planets!'

Planets should have been kept as they were until it was verified that every planet was an upgrade in terms of either usability, visuals, or realism. They didn't need to be perfect, they just needed to be 'not objectively worse' than what we had. I'm aware that a few planet types are working correctly and are impressive. Unfortunately, there are too many with some kind of fundamental issues (canyons on Ariel, best in game, completely gone, surface detail issues like the shot below, 'inkstamped' features on planetary surfaces that tile and repeat, just at different angles...

Gaining a few EXTREMELY lackluster atmospheric effects and a handful of new planets to land on was not worth the cost, imo. I don't hate FD, I'm not uninstalling the game, I'm not raging. Although I'm not playing it at the moment either, I believe this can all be fixed and I believe FD can do it, but I'm concerned by the statement that they do not currently wish to reroll the planets.

Please consider taking every opportunity to tell them the planets aren't good enough, in the hopes that we get a more serious revisiting of the generation algo, and some of the most important locations retain their unique character (Ariel, and others).

wth is this (2080ti, 1440p, ultra)?

… nah. What we got is a huge upgrade. There are still issues, but the new planet tech is marvellous.

:D S
Well, firstly, I'm not saying roll back the technology, just to fix whatever is wrong with the algo and then reroll the planets with the new tech, just working properly. But aside from your misunderstanding of my suggestion...

Do you mind if I ask you to qualify that statement? I provided evidence and cited specific issues. Looking at the shot above, are you ok with some planets looking like that? Do you think the worst issue of tiled and repeated stamped features can be fixed without rerolling? Have you found any canyons yet in Odyssey? Do you think a galaxy with no canyons is an upgrade? What exactly do you find 'marvelous', that wasn't marvelous before? I'm not being argumentative, I'm just trying to understand why you are happy with the current state.

Same way you qualify yours: personal opinion, and a weighing of what I enjoy (atmospheric realism, updated terrain) vs what I don’t (tiling, texture popping, topological issues, lack of connecting to existing game elements).

What I especially don’t worry about is some planets being boring. That’s just the nature of things. Also yes I’ve found canyons and deep holes to dive into and explore. Nothing as crazy as in Horizons, but also nothing looking like mathematical abstractions to the same extent as in Horizons.

Landscapes now look more real to me, in short. And it’s nice to finally see daylight.

Please can I see canyons? :) Give me hope. I only need one Ariel (but I still think the planets need rerolling :p )

Some of the new bio pois seem to prefer canyons. These are usually filled with rubble or what must be the game’s version of surging glaciers. I haven’t found the completely crazy trenches of yore yet.

There is a biome on some planets that consists of broken up plains, resulting in high plateaus with canyons between them. Wargis 1 for example is one with a large patch of that biome. And some ice moons come with the long, straight cracks, which often are shallow, but on some can reach quite some depth. Bets 7 D?, near Jung's Territory settlement has one of the deeper ones.

I'll have a look when the frame rates are fixed, thanks.

But don't you all think the tiling and stamping of features is inexcusable too? Dude popped up on the discord and was like, wow, the new planets are cool, I just found a dried up riverbed. 15 minutes later "yeh, guys I'm on another planet and I just found the same riverbed 😥 ", you think that can be fixed without rerolling?

I think the magic word is “riverbed”. Mr Dude was able to find the same geomorphology on different planets. It may have looked similar but would certainly not be the same.

There are some annoying pattern repetition, but usually at much larger scale than that. And I find the tiling annoying too. It was jarring during the Alpha when I logged a report on it, and it still is.

Please have a look at the planet tech thread. There are enough samples of identical structures. And explanations also.

It would be a soft reroll because it only means they use a greater variety of building blocks to create the terrain while not rerolling the overall biome composition of the planets.
