ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Please HELP! What did I do wrong? Seems here is another who can only use Amiga and such properly...

So, I installed OR DK2 2.04 with drivers, and according to my Win 7 Ultimate 32bit all installed fine. Although head tracking camera were installed last, as I runned out of USB 2.0 and 3.0 slots, and connected it through my 2.0 USB hub (that installed it´s drivers at same time with camera and my X52 Pro Flight Stick, all succesfully according to Windows).

Now my head tracking camera only blinks blue light when I turn my desktop on, then nothing. All cable connections made as in instructions. Does it matter what end of sync cable is in camera and what in cable connector box?

As I try ED withouth head tracking (and just kb+mouse), when I look fast into some direction with head move, or start barrel roll my ship near Azeban Orbital (head not moving), it´s structures near me seem to "stretch", and even come closer, until I end my movement. Where did I fail here? In monitor/option settings, having no head tracker still, or is that just how it (OR 3D) should/will work?

Thanks in advance for all who take time for this, please be detailed in instructions!

I think you have followed the instructions, but does the desk DEMO work? I think your problem maybe the hub is it powered? As this is in development I ripped all the USB connecter out and only installed what I needed making sure Rift to USB2.0 then K/B for basic setup and one other for stick. Hope this helps get your camera working.

Thank you for quick answer, I did not notice or test any demo, but not counting "stretching" (and lack of head movement) ED otherwise seems to be working fine as 3D with DK2, including HUD holograms (amazingly my solo GTX 680 OC 1084Mhz has no visible stuttering or FPS issues even at "High" graphics near Orbital).

Also, my USB-hub has lights on, and other 3 USB´s in it, including one for DK2 headset, all seem to work and get power through it.

Could it be that camera requires USB 3.0 or just it´s own 2.0 port? I would need to move my ISP router then to slower USB....

Rift normally likes USB2, the desk demo is in the rift config. utility (in the task notification manager) best place to start. set your IPD etc and activate the demo then look around the desk to make sure the tracking works. Good luck.

Hi Casastevo,

It's nice to see others tinkering with Direct mode. I'm getting very similar results to you. In Beta 2 nothing would get me above 37.5fps. In Beta 3 I'm getting 75fps in space, 37.5fps in hangar (LOW & High/full Oculus quality slider). I can get 75fps in the hangar but only by lowering the Oculus quality slider which for me makes it unplayable.

I have a GTX 970 which in Extended mode gives 75fps in hangar. This suggests to me rather than a GPU issue - Direct mode with ED need further development. The basic mechanics are now there and getting better :)

thats very interesting, beta 2 was fine for me on my hd7970, now in direct mode, im capped to 37.5 fps and low gpu usage, however, all is well in extended mode, 60-75fps and 80+% gpu usage

Sorry on rereading my post it may have not been clear. In Beta 2 + Direct mode I couldn't get over 37.5 fps. Were you being higher in Beta 2 + Direct mode?

And I was about to buy the 970 in hopes it would fix direct mode for me. Glad I read your post! Looks like Direct mode needs a lot of optimization work (could even be Oculus runtime stuff too). At least if I do pick up the 970 I should be set for extended mode. My goal is 970 FTW from EVGA x 2 in SLI.

Just a quick heads up for anyone thinking of ordering a rift from UK... I decided to buy another DK2 and was expecting to pick it up when I return to UK end of December... But it just shipped and will arrive on Monday ! Only ordered 10 days ago :)

That's not a bug, its basically a side effect of vsync. If you can't reach 75fps then it will lock at 37.5

I'm looking forward to the day Oculus and Frontier work out all the kinks. ED Beta 3 in direct mode is actually pretty neat and works well for me - except for the above mentioned issue.

I posted a while back about my performance sorrows with Beta 2, but with Nvidia's latest driver package, Beta 3 and my new GTX 970 things have improved massively. The drivers alone already helped a lot ony my old GTX 660Ti, but the 970 now allows me to use SSAA 1.5X and still get 75Hz almost constantly (except for the ice asteroid tutorial).

The remaining performance issues don't seem to be Rift related for the most part, I've seen plenty of regular players complain about the stuttering when aproaching planets in supercruise and similar issues.

Rift has arrived.

Rift arrived on Thursday Oct 30th... Happy Halloween!

this is correct im running crossfire with 2 old HD6950 in direct mode and vsinc off but capped at 76 fps done via riva statistics tuner. (Only in empty space I reach that)
But I never get stuck at 37.5 fps, which is exactly half of 75 :) I believe the black frames are not produced when you dip below 75 fps that's why I appears to half the frame rate. I think we actually never see more then 37.5 frames the other half are made by the rift in black.

I've posted this in the 3.03 bugs thread but I wanted to ask if anyone else was experiencing reduced Rift performance and a some, what I can only describe as, blurring of the game as if it's slightly out of focus?

This game is crazy, when I updated to 3.03 I was having to a very bad experience even with low settings. But after changing the XML's and setting again the Capture screen, the game visual came back to normal, didn't increase the setting because is not bad.
I notice frame rate jumps, like 75 solid then a jump to 40fps and back to 75. In stations same, but much more jumps. Before I was around 50/60fps in stations.
Plus the clipping in Hyperdrive is annoying, before it was happening only around 1 planet, not it's more often, plus if you get interdicted while graphics is clipping, navigation becomes a nightmare!

So I just ordered a rift but my monitor is 60hz only. I've read that this causes a lot of the juddering issues due to conflicts with the rifts 75hz. Are there workarounds for people with 60hz? I can't afford to buy a new monitor as well as the rift so if it causes a problem I may just cancel the rift order.

Its ok just use extended mode.

Thanks. What's the situation with mirroring on the primary display (for demo purposes) when using extended mode? I'd read something about display drivers not being able to cope with the fact that the rift is essentially a vertical display turned horizontal and the difference in orientation prevents successful mirroring?

Not sure what that means? Mirroring works fine... there's an (unsupported, but came from a dev) hack you need to make to your XML files to make it happen. Can't find the link at present, but I'm sure someone can point you to it or you can do a search.

The Rift "monitor" usually needs to be flipped in Windows. Mine is set to "Landscape (flipped)" but others have to use "Portrait (flipped)". Not really sure why. :S

Arrived, 10 days from order! See you in the Rift :D

I can't afford to buy a new monitor as well as the rift so if it causes a problem I may just cancel the rift order.

"most" monitors will support 75hz in a lower res. For mine its 1280x1024 (native is 1920*1200). It actually changes the res when I turn on the rift. Its standard windows behaviour try this:

1. with rift turned off, set your monitor as you like it (eg, native res at 60hz)
2. turn on rift (in extended mode)
3. setup both rift and main monitor to desired res and 75hz (lower res for main monitor)

you should find that when you turn off the rift your monitor goes back to normal, and when you turn it on again, your main screens drops to the lower res at 75hz.

works for me.

EDIT: if your monitor doesnt support 75hz, then turn it off when using the rift.
