A comparison of ED vs X3

Which "newly formed company" are you referring to? If it isn't a fictional company then I will deduce you mean the makers of ED, Frontier Developments? yet again you spout without checking your facts. Frontier Developments has been around since 1994, longer than you have I suspect and ED isn't their first game, read and educate yourself with some facts: http://www.frontier.co.uk/games/projects/ . Introducing nebulas isnt exactly bypassing us old guys, here is a newsflash for you: NEBULAE EXIST IN REAL LIFE in the Milky Way so it is quite reasonable even to the die hard "realists" that they would be in the game.
Whoops, when I wrote that for some reason I had RSI stuck in my head for some reason.

Well, unless you suffer a nervous breakdown when you finally realize how big the galaxy is. ;)
With the galaxy the size that it will be, along with the "instance" system, I wager it will take one week post release before this game becomes a single-player experience. I hope you are into that, otherwise you had better start making friends right now while you still can! Couple that with how boring the game is single player, and you have a recipe for a lackluster game at launch.

Why anyone would try marketing a video game to the 40+ year old crowd is beyond me. Sounds like a surefire way to bankrupt a newly formed company.

Which show how little you actually know about the video game business. According to the ESA's 2014 report gamers in the 36+ age bracket account for 39% of all gamers: http://www.theesa.com/facts/pdfs/ESA_EF_2014.pdf

But don't let something as simple as facts stop your ageist ranting when people disagree with you....

Of course I'm into that. You think I would spend 150$ on a game whose concept I did not research thoroughly and agree with?

Unlike some people? :D

Also, you don't understand the social nature of human beings. Given basic social tools, hubs will form spontaneously and those looking for other players to fight or play with will have places to go to. Nobody needs to stick a big red marker on the map with "GO HERE NEXT" in bold neon letters.

So it takes 65% of a human's remaining life span to make up 39% of all gamers? That's called the minority. How's that for a fact.

To COD kids. A good thing, I'd be worried if I found their shallow toys interesting.

And yeah, as with all games that go for a niche market, there will be a lot of confused people at first. I'm more worried about current lack of social features because that's really confusing since the game is marketed as MMO. Not so worried about WoW players wandering in here and expecting to see space orcs.

You know FD have never used the term MMO, they have said a multi-player option but it is and has never been an MMO, it is more the kind of game you can play alone in your room when all the popular people are out having fun and then when they get back in at 1am and log on you can hook up with them in a group session and be part of their crowd before logging off and crying myself....err hmmm I mean yourself to sleep.

Frontier is one of the oldest independent studios in the world. I think they know what they are doing.

It's probably worth mentioning that many of us 40+ year old gamers have been gaming longer than you've been alive, so it's possible that we also know a thing or two about what makes a good game. Although it's also true that we're too old to know everything...

Even if they did use the term, one month after release there won't be any "mass multiplayer" in this game. It will be dead and boring. Only the lifeless husks of former Amiga players will be sitting in their basements playing alone.

I'm 28. I've lived just long enough to play from the very beginning, but not long enough to lose my sense as to what makes a good game in our current generation. You guys are already reaching the "back in my day things were better" point, as you've all applied it to this game.

Ah, my bad, I didn't notice they changed it. There was a blurb advertising the game as a MMO at one time on the official page. Good, so fewer confused customers!

And we still need open chat channels. :p

Don't worry, Interstellar is here to put you guys back on your wheelchairs and into a safe spot where no one can harm you, you have my word.

You played Elite two years before you were born, now thats good game play

Those basements are going to be crowded, all us BBC micro and Commodore 64 players willing to have a go on the Amiga. Filled vector graphics @ 10 FPS, can you imagine how glorious that is!

Wow you are so smart aren't you... Uh no, I played it when I was about 10. You do realize that released software doesn't stop existing after a certain time frame.
Even to this day I sometimes play old NES games on an emulator.

@ Interstellar

I have no problem with you having an opinion, no problem with you not liking the game, (as it stands), but seriously, wind your neck in a bit and stop insulting people.

EDIT - And if you think being 28 managed to somehow put you 'at the very beginning' of anything.....wow

How much did you play it and how far did you progress? I ask as you seem to think E: D will "fail unless changed to add features from another game"....

Do you think that standards for video games haven't changed in TWENTY years? They can't just make Elite with better graphics and call it a day.

Here's a true experiment. Release the game and let's see what it gets on Metacritic and how many players remain after a month. The game is BORING BORING BORING. I spent $75 on it, which is more than any AAA release, so of course I will voice my opinion about how to make it not so damn boring.

There is 30 google pages worth of content like the above. Expect the number of these types of posts to EXPLODE on release. Face it, your game is a BORING grind, if you can't fix the grind, then at least make it enjoyable. My suggestions were merely a way to unsnorefest this game, but they were quickly shot down by the old ass first elite playing mofos that want to keep this as simple and boring as possible. Hey guess what, 1984 called and they want their game back. It's almost 2015 and people are happy with a 1984 game with better graphics. Meh, might just chargeback the game and delete it and wait for release reviews.

Wow your one unhappy bunny there aren't you?

I am no going to flame and and I really want this to come across as constructive. Once the full release is out there will be a lot more variety but at the moment they are testing stuff, yes I know you have said you know it is beta, but saying it does not make it so. Please wait for the full release and then see what you think of the game, I hope that I am wrong but I get the feeling that this is not the game that you are looking for. People used to play the original Elite for thousands of hours despite there being a lot less variation than in ED, the reason was that they were playing their game the way they wanted to and believe it or not they were playing make believe, really I kid you not. The whole premise of ED is that there is no narrative or story it really is Lego for your PC, you just put your ship together and go play at being Buck Rodgers or Han Solo. If you can't or won't do that then you are really not going to enjoy ED.

Do you think that standards for video games haven't changed in TWENTY years? They can't just make Elite with better graphics and call it a day. *facepalm*

I expect E: D to be no less ground-breaking than its ultimate predecessor was when it was release thirty years ago. "Ground breaking" in that it will not simply plough over old ground covered by other games while remaining true to its origins - Frontier asked us if we wanted to go along for the ride when they stated that they were going to make the game that they want to play - over 25,000 of us decided that we liked the idea and pledged.

Yea, them "standards" cater to brainless masses.

While I personally dislike games like CoD and all the mainstream stuff (300 out of my 400 steam games are all indie games), you can't just ignore that they exist and that this is what gaming has become.

Are you the same anikaiful from STO?

Hold on ..

Every Space Trading game (including the X series) is based on Elite .....

wrong. Every space trading game is based on Traveller pen and paper and Star Trader.

Besides as far as I remember the X Series went way beyond the original "trade" thing, you can also build stations, manage a whole fleet of trade ships, basically it includes
Empire building too. So it went off the beaten track of simple trading Privateer/Elite style very early on.
