Elite Dangerous Issue Report - 10/08/2021

Greetings Commanders!

I'd like to introduce you to something new. Below is our first Top 20 Issues table, summarising the highest voted issues on the Issue Tracker. As part of being open and honest about the game's development, we'll be regularly posting updated versions of this table and discussing it on our Supercruise News streams.

Note: the status and planned release of each issue is subject to change as various factors affect the ongoing development schedule.

Top 20 Issues:

  1. Problems With Lighting and Illumination: We're happy to say this is now fixed since Update 6, having spent some time to monitor it afterwards. Any new issues to do with lighting should now be reported on the Issue Tracker as normal.

  2. Degraded Terrain Textures Compared To Horizons: A lot of the work for this went into Update 6, with some finishing touches coming in Update 7.

  3. Tiling Planetary Features: Changing the way planets are generated signifies a huge undertaking, so we're still investigating this.

  4. Low FPS Performance In Odyssey: This work will continue up to the end of the year, with improvements added already in Update 6, we know there is more to do.

  5. Limited Gameplay During Apex Shuttle Rides: Nothing to share at this time.

  6. Game Hangs On Exit Sometimes: Currently under investigation, we'll aim for the next update but it's one of the fixes more likely to end up in a later update.

  7. Invincible Thargoid Heart: We know this is a longstanding issue which has a complex cause. It's still being investigated and hasn't been forgotten. If you would like to contribute some information to this issue and others, please read this post.

  8. Anti-Aliasing Not Working Correctly: Some changes will go in Update 7 or 8, with significant improvements, but a full anti-aliasing system is slated for later this year.

  9. Joystick Buttons 32+ Not Working: Not started as other issues are prioritised.

  10. Expose Telemetry Data For Motion Simulators: We're currently discussing this internally, and may decide against it. If it does go ahead, it won't be before Update 8.

  11. NHSS Signals In Odyssey That Should Contain Interceptor Are Empty: Appears to be fixed, should arrive in Update 7 pending some further QA testing.

  12. Increased Performance Problems Since Update 5: Some further improvements are coming in Update 7, while general optimisation will be ongoing. The coming change won't be a fix for everyone, but will resolve some of the drops players are seeing.

  13. Supercruise Stuck At '0' Time Remaining With Tunnel Forming: Currently under investigation.

  14. Fleet Carrier Modules And Finances Not Calculated Towards Assets: In progress, slated for Update 7.

  15. NPC Fighter Kills In Conflict Zones Count As Progression: Currently under investigation.

  16. Support Missions Have Been Culled: Fix should be incoming in Update 7.

  17. A Previously Present Codex Entry Is Now Missing: Under investigation. Currently considered lower priority.

  18. System & Galaxy Map Misalignment In Widescreen Aspect Ratios: In progress, unlikely for Update 7.

  19. Stolen Tritium Cannot Be Donated Into A Fleet Carrier's Fuel Depot: Fixed, should arrive in Update 7.

  20. Missions and Rewards Not Sharing With The Team: Fixed, should arrive in Update 7.

This is a reflection of the current scenario, and due to the ever-evolving nature of game development, the planned release for these fixes is subject to change. Let us know what you think of this report below!

See you in the black Commanders,

Many thanks for the update👍🏽
Item 10 may open up an enhanced way for players to really fly in their ships 😀 vr goggles plus motioning chair setup, you won't be looking into the elite dangerous world you will be in it ☺️

Very good summary!

Could you please also take a look at the desynch issues when you are in the same ship with another commander?
Sadly it is not included in the top 20 list. Jumping into supercruise/hyperspace (or jumping out) usually ends up with desynch,
and the team member needs to relog.
Sometimes teammates can lose shared missions that are already completed, as you cannot share them again once all objectives
are completed.

This is the best related issue I could find, any additional votes for this are welcome!

Thanks for the update @Zac Cocken - really great to see this comms going out!

As for the issue 1 - Problems With Lighting and Illumination - I don't think this is fixed. You can easily tell by going into the Gamma settings and having a look how different it looks depending on hardware configuration. For many people the slider has to be ALL the way to the right for the left image to be slightly visible. This makes the darkest areas of the game be visible, but at the same time brightens everything else drastically and the end effect doesn't look good at all.

If you set it too low, the overall image quality is better, but then the darkest areas are just pure black and don't display properly.

Unless the Gamma images in Options need to be adjusted accordingly to cater for the lighting changes?

Subscribed, as in:
I also don't think the issues are fixed. Currently my Gamma setting for EDO is like 80% compared with 50% in Horizons. Which makes certain things (in space/cockpit most of the time, but also in certain stations) much brighter than they should be

I like this little table! Really highlights that bugs are being addressed and worked on. Even with a small view on when they might be addressed. This is something myself and others have been asking for. I know development is hard and many things can change, but it's nice to have some idea of hope down the line.

I am over the moon to see that Anti-Aliasing is being worked on. Folks have no idea just how much of a major change that will be to the quality of the game.

Problems With Lighting and Illumination: We're happy to say this is now fixed since Update 6, having spent some time to monitor it afterwards. Any new issues to do with lighting should now be reported on the Issue Tracker as normal.
Not at all sure how this was declared fixed, given the recent confirmations on two major lighting issues:
1. Illumination of background planets is tied to illumination of player ship by the illuminating star https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/41371
2. Incorrect brightness/contrast adjustment depending on angle between camera, ship and star https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/41372

I believe Sally is tracking these too?

Also, the outfitting UI still doesn't let you see the modifications made to stored modules. I had made a ticket about it since launch, which has now expired despite confirmations. https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/31444

The station UI has problems updating in general, the current three I know of are:
1. On replacing an engineered module (say Beam 1) with a stored engineered module (Beam 2), the outfitting UI still shows Beam 1's experimental effects. It only correctly shows Beam 2's experimental after relaunching the outfitting UI. See:
Source: https://youtu.be/e1XHmTt0h1w
https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/31444 (expired)

2. Local galnet news information such as station repair materials only displays in odyssey upon relogging while docked at the station.
3. Partially loading cargo multiple times into your ship at a fleet carrier market does not work or update correctly unless the UI is re-opened. Otherwise it will only load the commodities selected the first time (which also doesn't update the UI).

There's also a potential issue with turning in source and return missions, it seems to empty the cargo hold of all commodities of the same type even if it goes beyond what is required by the mission.

I don't have tickets on hand for the latter issues, but people are free to investigate and make tickets.

p.s. Tilman Point station still doesn't have a rescue ship after 1.5 weeks of burning :) https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/41171

I also don't think the issues are fixed. Currently my Gamma setting for EDO is like 80% compared with 50% in Horizons. Which makes certain things (in space/cockpit most of the time, but also in certain stations) much brighter than they should be
That is curious, my slider is most of the way to the left to make the leftmost symbol barely visible - for Odyssey I needed to move it a little further to the left for the same visibility. How our machines / monitors differ!

https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/41175 is now marked as FIXED. While the NPC SLF pilot doesn't spam messages like they did after Update 5 they are still calling out the wrong messages at the wrong time, e.g.: they'll call out: "That's the last of them Commander" just after they launch before either of you engage anyone.

It's better than it was but it's not working correctly like it was before U5.

How can you say that lighting is fixed when there are daily posts about the cockpits being to bright ?

Zac, I'm glad you are doing this. Very nice insight and open comms. Thank you!

I have two comments. The first is that there is a bug not on this list, around suit loadout management causing the client to crash. For some of us it makes the game basically unplayable. I don't see it on this list but I hope it's addressed shortly.

The second is that the lighting being marked as fixed is confusing, because there have been issues with the gamma settings since odyssey launch. in order to get the coloration from dust clouds in space back (and I mean the light blues and different hues that would appear and disappear based on proximity to the sun) you have to turn gamma all the way up. But then that messed up illuminated areas because now they're too bright. This issue has been brought up on the forums many times but I've never actually seen a response from FD on it. So by the declaration that lighting and illumination is fixed in your list, does that mean FD does not consider there to be an issue with Gamma? Is the lack of dust coloration the new normal? Can we get some kind of update on this?

Thanks for this, it was much needed! My faith is restored. Now add a feature request report and I'll be 100% happy!!

@Bruce G @Zac Cocken Would like to ask whether this if for all issues for Elite or whether this is just EDO Pc focused. As said on stream "No news is worse than bad news" (Not much news heading consoles way) and if that is for all of Elite then obviously console is not even a consideration presently which is a little harsh I mean it is coming across it would be easier to get a pc or switch games. If I have misinterpreted then would it be possible to have one of these for console as recently Elite is very unstable on console past month crashes increasing when leaving planets or being interdicted not to even mention the jittering (Reported), presently no way of knowing if this is even being acknowledged. Right said my piece I will go back to the corner of my dark cave and wait lol :D

(this response is not necessarily directed at the poster, but more generally, at all of us)

There appear to be 9 items in the list which will be fixed/released in Update 7 (assuming beginning of Sep, hopefully sooner, but rather have fixes when they're done properly).

Further assumptions could be be made that those 9 will be replaced in the list with items not currently on the list.

Getting people forum participants to vote things up in the issue tracker should help get them onto the Top 20 list for Update 8/beyond.

How long will the Top 20 List be around? Hopefully a long time, unless all of the issues get fixed, which seems unlikely.
