EDO Performance low priority

Seven weeks is nothing. If you think it's something, you are still quite young (however, if you think seven years is nothing, you've been around the block a few times).

To put things into perspective, 7 weeks is 35 (or less!) business days, or 280 work hours (I really hope the devs aren't doing more than 8h/day). Have we had anything to show for that 280 hours? Yes, plenty. A lot more than 280 bug fixes, tweaks, improvements, UI overhauls... and doing any of those changes takes time in a system as big as Elite, and I don't imagine just building the client is quick, so the edit, compile run, debug cycle will be slow. These things take time, a lot of time, and always more time than one would expect.
I wish I was young, I'm 51 and I've worked in IT doing development and support all my adult life ( business application software and tools )
7 weeks for a team of programmers is reasonable time to try and make an 'expansion' playable, especially when it was playable before the expansion!
It's not a question them doing nothing, it's a question of priorities. They focused on the more simple issues and a lot of fixes to bugs that no one even knew existed.
We reported the serious performance issues during the Alpha, that was back in May! so they have actually known about the performance issues for almost 14 weeks.
In settlements my FPS ranges from 15-30, even when not doing combat, that's on a machine that gets 40-45 in Cyperpunk 2077. I also get over 100 FPS in Horizons driving around on planets.
They know it's bad, it's been bad since the Alpha.

Making the terrible new UI something that's actually usable is not the same team that broken the renderer and seem incapable of fixing it.

2070 Super here with 1080 display - get over 60 fps everywhere, so 🤷‍♂️
I've got the same sort of setup and get similar. But I do get huge drops occasionally -- particularly in docking bays, where it can be 60fps one moment and 5fps another.

So I don't think it's necessarily the amount of shaded polygons it's spitting out. As a piece of uninformed wild speculation, I suspect it's loading/unloading textures and perhaps some areas are bugged (so in a docking bay, which is a threshold between areas, one rule is telling it to load the station textures in and another rule is telling it to ditch them -- back and forth, clogging everything up).

Dunno. I find it hard to believe they didn't notice their new renderer was taking two or three times as long to render everything until the last moments of testing. So it's probably something that was plugged into the system late in the day.

So do I. I'm 50, and I've worked in various software development that had nothing to do with games for a good chunk of my adult life. Had a little stint or two with Squad and Valve recently, and there's a chunk of teaching English in there too. However, I've been hobby-programming (mostly graphics, games and physics simulation stuff) since I was 12.

That´s nonsense sry.

Go into a conflict zone on foot, make a screenshot or video form your constantly 60 FPS. You would be the only one who is getting those fps there.

Was just in a CZ, 60fps. I'm not trying to be controversial - just point out that everyone seems to be having vastly different experiences. Even those with 3080 seem to be getting less than 60.

I'm not an expert in graphics engines, GPUs or optimisation - but something tells me there is something odd going on in the way Odyssey uses the GPU for players to have such differing experiences.

I'm going to apply for a steam refund.
Uninstalled it with less than 2hrs played. It was sold as a full expansion and not some half finished bilge.
About time people stood up to developers pulling this s***e.
You'd expect it from Chris Roberts, always thought Frontier had a bit more class. Shame.

Ah come on, I don´t belive you. Continuous 60+ fps in CZ on foot? I just belive it when I see it.

Have a 3080 SuperX, get continuous 100+fps in Hunt, everything Ultra, on 3440x1440. So pls be true.

Hahaha, Jesus. Throw away the best space experience that we ever will feel after a few minutes, then register and post in the official forum to a specific topic? You are talking and doin ....

But do it, your decision. You would be just a little insignificant fragg at the roadside anyway.

I've been playing elite for decades if you count from the Commodore 64 version.
I've been registered on here for years.
I've hours and hours of ED played but my post was specific to Odyssey in a thread specific to performance in Odyssey.
Please feel free to go forth and multiply with yourself pal.

Then you refund Odyssey, those few bucks? That makes it even more ridiculous.

Anyway, topic, I want to see if anybody, anybody around here get stable 60+ fps in CZ on foot, can someone prove it?

I'm not able to make videos, but here is a shot. Very occasionally it dips to 58fps when it gets really intense, but the dips are for no more than a second.

Running game on Ultra with Normal upscaling and 1x SS.

In all fairness, it's quite funny how EDO and EDH are still completely separate installs (I still have both installed next to each other, just in case something else breaks in Odyssey but still works in Horizons), never mind the DLC content being quite segregated in-game as well.

You could refund Odyssey and just keep playing Horizons as per normal - who knows when they'll replace the client for EDH. Horizons even performs and looks better as well, from a technical aspect.

If I still had the option to refund I'd probably do it - barely do anything on-foot these days and most of the things I do in-game (in Odyssey obviously) is actually legacy content from Horizons.

Do you have discord and can stream for me? Would be nice to see this live!

(But I also want to say, 60 fps is barely the minimum, actual we need better fps to play it like a real shooter)

Yeah 60fps is minimum. I just have my frame rate limit set to 60hz.

Never use Discord :(

I'll see if I can install OBS or something if you're really keen to see it - but surely I can't be the only player experiencing this?

I have a 3080 and my intel is working like trillion horses short before dying because of hard work. I´m not getting stable 60fps

Discord is good, it´s the best way nowdays to be in contact with each other in gaming communitys. Join the ED Community discord

I'm a level below you re GPU (2060S) with an i7 9700 and 16GB RAM, and am playing at Ultra settings but 2k resolution. I find that dropping resolution gives by far the biggest boosts in performance, but I still wouldn't be able to get consistent 60fps in the game, certainly not CZs, so I'm sticking to 1440p because 1080p on my monitor looks terrible, especially with Elite's awful AA.

So at 1440p/Ultra I usually get between 30-45 in CZs or settlements in general, so I locked my game to 45fps to make the jumps less obvious (only works to some extent). In Horizons I would get a guaranteed 60fps+ everywhere in the game, without stutter or freezes. I did notice that in settlements where there are no NPCs the game is very smooth, so it's got to be something with the AI that affects performance (at least in part).

And I have a feeling that it's not just the GPU but the CPU (possibly combo of both) that make the difference - I once limited my CPU to 75% and my framerate actually went up (if only by a few frames). 🤷‍♂️

A level? Some level! :D

It is because FD don´t optimise how it works, clearly. I switch my settings to middle and low and I get nearly the same fps! This is bull.... . I really want to play it finally after how much month of release? This is so frustrating. But maybe Zeke find out some setting which runs better for now, I want to check this.

Yeah I know. I've been moaning about it since day one but it's clear that Frontier are struggling figuring this out.

I'm not even bothering with playing with the settings anymore, as that has very little effect in terms of performance (something unoptimised mess of code has often in common). Drop resolution (and FSR is a variation of that so for me it's a pointless feature as it makes everything look much worse) or lock to a lower framerate, that's the only thing that (kind of) works right now.

Don't have any of these issues with Horizons, and let's not forget we're talking about an add-on DLC here, not Elite Dangerous 2. It should perform exactly like Horizons (I would accept a loss of 5fps or so given the different tech, but any more than that = not worth it) so I'm not accepting all these "but the game's got better graphics" - especially when it actually looks worse than the base game (certainly in terms of lighting, textures, etc.).

But there's nothing I can do about now, apart from hoping Frontier regain control of their software and fix it. The only other option is to uninstall it really... am not there yet though.

Sure, you can upvote the Issue in the tracker. Everybody should do it. It´s not on Pos.1!!! This really freaks me out.

But I´m not with you concerning the OY should be same performance like HO. OY have graphics updated in every way! Also OY on foot have more detailed houses, flames, NPCs running around etc.. I always hoped that this will come and that we need a better GPU for that. So from this point of view, all good! But damn, I should be possible to play after all.

.... When I think about this, maybe the NPC KI is producing this low performance? This could be the reason
