ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

So I just ordered a rift but my monitor is 60hz only. I've read that this causes a lot of the juddering issues due to conflicts with the rifts 75hz. Are there workarounds for people with 60hz? I can't afford to buy a new monitor as well as the rift so if it causes a problem I may just cancel the rift order.

Don't panic!

Yes there can be problems with the Rift working in (especialy multi-) monitor setups and 60Hz. But there are many factors that cause this (e.g. some say Windows 7 is more problematic than Windows 8.1) and most can be fixed or worked around, if all else fails just use the Rift as your only monitor while gaming (easy to do as Windows will remember to reactivate your other monitors when you shut the Rift off). Just don't expect a 100% plug and play experience.

The biggest hurdle in reality is getting a framerate of > 75FPS in ED. If your rig cannot manage that, you might as well go ahead and cancel. Save the money for CV1 and a GPU upgrade next year. You will miss out on witnessing the early days, but end up with a much better experience as the hardware will be better and most of the bugs will have been solved.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Here's my system -

i5 Quad Core Processor i5-4670 (3.4GHz) 6MB Cache
ASUS Z87-A motherboard
8GB KINGSTON HYPER-X GENESIS DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz
GTX 780 Ti
Windows 8.1
Monitor - IIYAMA XB2779QS-S1 27" IPS LED 2560x1440

How's this looking for Rift performance?

almost identical to mine, apart from i have a AMD o/c from 3.7 to 4.11GHz
and you have a better gfx card,

I have the 680Ti ...

I can run elite almost max setting on the rift, and downsampled to 2560x1440 and runs ok, not amazing! if i had the heart to take off the downsampling and lower the elite graphics a little it would run just fine with no issues... (apart from the issues elite itself has with server lag and jumping in busy places) which will be fixed over time.
im going to go ahead and say get the DK2! if you have the money spare and not putting yourself out of pocket you wont regret getting one, plus there are other games out there that work perfect on the rift on full settings like assetto corsa, alien isolation ect. just dont expect to stick one on your head and everything to just play!
it does take tweaking and some digging up on tips in forums to find that sweet spot :D

You should be fine. I have a slightly weaker system (except for more RAM) and am able to run ED pretty well at medium setting with some supersampling thrown in.

My DK2 arrived today, must be a record turnaround time!

It is also quite literal. I just improved my experience no end by lengthening the top strap and having the side straps further down, suddenly made everything far easier to read in menus and crisper. There is certainly a hardware sweet spot to find along with a software one.

+1 to that, i have to shuffle the headset around until my eyes are lined up with the lenses perfectly

Oculus would have saved alot of hassle if they just had a direct HDMI to the back of our heads directly into the brain for VR

Hey guys I need help.

I just installed 3.03 and the 0.4.3 runtime.
Now when I log into ED, the view is twitching. It's camera related because when I cover the positional tracker with my hand, the twitching stops.

Has anyone had this problem? Help!

6 weeks and 2 days. Arrived yesterday 4th November, working fine. Feeling sick now...lol

Feeling sick in a good way? :D

Or feeling sick in anticipation of trying it?

Let us know what you think. Always fun to read first reactions.

Motion sickness, sadly. Still feel dizzy today. Some of the demos have been rough to say the least. Others have been excellent, especially those that don't require moving up/down at the same time as moving the head. Getting a decent fps (40-75) from an nvidia gtx 460m on an i7 laptop. Not sure about the aliasing- that's pretty bad. Seems worse in direct mode from most programs. The disembodied feeling is pretty wierd...having an avatar in Elite is going to be a good thing...not sure I like being a ghostly spirit. "I'm not dead!"
