Less than 5k cmdrs logging in now.

Just begs the question. Are they going to continue development of elite.?
Odyssey has cost em dear it seems.
The rebalance needs doing last year.

Grr... why cant I quote the title?
Anyway,

Your starting premise, less than 5k players logging in now, doesnt mean there are only 5k players.
It only means that at that particular moment in time there were 5k players in game

Assuming an average gaming session is 2h, that means 60,000 daily players.
Assuming someone plays ED once every 3 days, that means like 180,000 weekly players.
And assuming that 5k figure of yours was from Steam Charts - that's only Steam, without Frontier Launcher figures, Epic figures and Console Figures
But all these are madeup figures based on some starting numbers that may not be really anchored in reality.

Let me point out that in their financial report for 2020, they reported 500,000 monthly players.

Well not now that you've pointed out the game's dead. Just got word that the entire ED team has been laid off this morning after DBOBE read your post. Fortunately I believe Dav is the head of online for all their games, so the servers will stay running so long as nobody catches him siphoning the hamster feed from the other games.

Why does whatever anyone else is doing affect whether you want to play or not - how bizarre!

I'm not saying it's happening any time soon, but the underlying point the OP makes is valid. If Odyssey starts losing Frontier money, they'll sooner or later call it quits.

Anthem or Mass Effect Andromeda are two examples where developers "promised" to fix the game after a bad release but ended up dropping it.

But I'm pretty sure we don't have to worry for AT LEAST another year.

So medium range doom :D

Which is the case with probably any game ever published!

Every Game is doomed !!!!!

The game is nearly there again and you can see it in your contact lists which are slowly filling again. You even meet strangers in Open again which has not been the case since Bazmeson Month. For me, that's a much more reliable indicator than any arbitrary numbers 🤷‍♂️

O7,
🙃

Well, that doesn't mean much, really. I had stopped playing Elite on 30th June because of Odyssey and only recently came back to see what has improved since then. Over the last few weeks I have engaged with Odyssey content mostly because I have already done everything Horizons has to offer. I have done some small exobio exploration, participated in two CGs, I tried to grind mats for some gear engineering (but stopped again, because it's just so atrocious)... I already feel like I'm done again. Odyssey just doesn't bring anything fun or exciting enough to the table to keep me engaged like Horizons did (most certainly not for the prizetag FDev demanded). Last weekend a few friends and me started with Valheim again and I'm already more interested in that game than continuing with Elite 🤷‍♂️

One might be tempted to say "So, just go and play Horizons then. It's still there.". Well, I already own a FC filled with all the ships and money I'll ever need. I don't care much for any BGS or PP shenanigans. When FC interiors come, I might head out for another FC based expedition later this year/early next year. But FDev treats exploration really like the unwanted step-child at the moment. I don't know if picking space flowers provides enough "new" content to keep me engaged for a few more months.

What Elite needs is something like a clear statement of intent and a clearly defined vision for the future of the game. Initially during Kickstarter, there was this ten year period mentioned and that timeframe is almost over. Does FDev even want to continue supporting this game after those ten years? Which direction is the game supposed to take? More action oriented shooter gameplay like Odyssey indicates? Back to the roots of a more balanced approach with properly developed content for all ingame "professions"?
I'm not really interested in details like "ship interiors", "VR support" or "Thargoid FPS" here. I want to see an ambitious vision for the future of Elite, because this game still has a lot of potential and could live as long as EVE Online or World of Warcraft.

Indeed so, it is going to take a while longer to finish 'fixing' Odyssey, then, if it can be ported to consoles (if) a few more months to do so.
If the 'fix' is a good one, more players might buy...

The ten-year plan as the forum like to call it is nothing but an invention of the forum.

"SWTOR is dead!"
"SWTOR is dying!"
"No-one is playing SWTOR any more!"

Oh wait, this is Elite not SWTOR. I get confused with all the "this game is dead" stuff I read.

When ED launched exploration consisted of holding one button and looking at some random variations of 2d textures. From day1 combat has always been the most fleshed out activity, there has never been a "balanced approach", the entire series has always been combat centric, virtually all trailers are about combat and maybe people should come to terms with that after seven years.

Oh, KS didn't mention any ten year plan whatsoever.

The OP may not have pointed out the most relevant statistic, but idea that ED has fewer players post-Odyssey is both accurate and very easy to confirm.

Why does whatever anyone else is doing affect whether you want to play or not - how bizarre!

Player density can significantly alter the experience of a multiplayer game.

Your starting premise, less than 5k players logging in now, doesnt mean there are only 5k players.

There were still twice as many six months ago, and there haven't been so few concurrent players as these last few weeks in a very long time.

The 'only Steam' argument doesn't mean anything. There is no reason for Steam's figures to not be representative of the whole or not be indicative of the general trend, even if most players weren't on Steam. That Steam sample size is multiple orders of magnitude larger than needed to get a very accurate picture of population trends.
