Need to upgrade from oculus cv1

I think I've seen posts it being discounted in U.S. and EU - at Amazon Spain as low as €400 which is not much more expensive, especially considering that Q2 needs extra bits to it (cable and/or the headstrap).
Some quality issues aside it is really great even for the price, I just it will remain solid for years to come as I think it will make even the next two gens of GPUs a run for their money. :)

This was my thinking as well. I maintain that the cable is NOT needed as it works well without (but even then, you don't have to pay the £80 premium for the Oculus version, a cheaper £20-£30 version on Amazon/eBay works just as well). The strap is more of a personal thing, and it depends how well you get on with the elasticated one it comes with. I didn't, so sought alternatives.

There were rumours of a "Quest Pro" being developed, but FB/Meta's recent presentation suggests that they're sticking with the Quest 2 as is for the foreseeable future. So it's not going to suddenly become obsolete.

It reaches a point where you have to decide whether something is "good enough" or not. You can spend crazy money on VR, and the G2 is an awesome premium headset that can compete with the Rift and the Index etc, but for me, the Quest 2 is "good enough". It's certainly a big step up from the CV1, which was the OP's original concern.

Aye - the Project Cambria reveal makes the new headset sound like a side-grade:
The new/improved features probably won’t affect PC VR gaming by the sounds of it.

Also to note, this little thing on the Amazon UK store page for the 128GB version:
Order an "Oculus Quest 2 128 GB" or "Oculus Quest 2 256 GB" between November 22nd 2021 and November 30th 2021 and, once shipped, you will receive a promotional code worth £50 to spend on Amazon.co.uk by January 14th, 2022. T&Cs apply.”

Yeah, I was also on the OG CV1 before upgrading, I really got to the point with that headset that I was not willing to put up with the image quality. However, the build quality is was better than that of the G2 (felt more robust and better made, the mask aside) and I'm through two cables already - fortunately HP's customer service is getting increasingly efficient with sending new cables. Last time it took a mere three days from calling them and getting the replacement cable shipped from the Netherlands!

Also to note: the mandatory Facebook linked account thing is being dropped next year, if that’s the sort of thing that bothers you. It looks like we’re going back to the original Oculus account, but rebranded to the new Meta name.
Not that I dont believe you, but could you source that for me? My google foo is failing me... or Im tired. Or both.

Sure:
As we’ve focused more on work, and frankly as we’ve heard your feedback more broadly, we’re working on making it so you can login into Quest with an account other than your personal Facebook account. We’re starting to test support for work accounts soon, and we’re working on making a broader shift here, within the next year. I know this is a big deal for a lot of people. Not everyone wants their social media profile linked to all these other experiences and I get that, especially as the metaverse expands.”

I just discovered the price of that link cabel and geeeeeez almost £90. That was a turn off. You mention a non oculus version, what would that cabel be called then? I just remembered Ariochs link on page 1 to amazon.
How long does it take to charge up the battery if its being used with airlink?

It's just a normal USB-C cable. What makes the Oculus one special I have no idea (they're pulling an Apple), but one end is right angled. It doesn't need to be. AFAIK, pretty much any 3m or 5m USB-C cable will work. These are not expensive.

But my advice would be to wait, and see if you actually need it first before purchasing. Chances are you won't. It comes with a 1m cable in the box, which is sufficient for connecting it to a PC and transferring files to it (via a freeware piece of software called Sidequest).

About an hour for a full charge, maybe slightly more. Then you get about 2.5 hours or so of wireless playtime. Lots of people fit external batteries onto their straps, which can give another 8-10 hours or so. That can ironically help with weight distribution and balance on your head too... so something to consider maybe.

Yes, 1 meter cable is enough. I only use vr for simming (for now) and I did think that a couple of hours is enough and I dont think ive been much more in vr than that anyway. Great news about that cable and I thank you for good advice and help.

I see pricelulu.co.uk have the Q2 for £259. I bought mine from here last year. I think they are US stock so mine came with a US mains USB adapter

I think it might be a universal one, there's a middle pin that pops out (took me a while to find it initially). I ordered mine from Amazon UK.

Do you think we will be able to "un-link" accounts from Facebook if/when they go back to using non-Facebook accounts? I'm itching to upgrade my CV1 but the Facebook account requirement is one of the things holding me back. Also, I still have concerns about comfort, tracking and the sub-par audio on the Q2. My trusty CV1 may not hold up screen-wise, but I can wear it for 5 hours with no trouble whatsoever and sound quality is still very impressive.

Yes - Facebook Reality Labs VP Andrew Bosworth (Boz) confirmed in a Tweet that you'll be able to delete your Facebook account and still continue to play the games you've purchased:

…or has he put it, “Yup” 😁

Like I’ve said earlier, having come from a CV1 I’ve not experienced much of a difference tracking quality - and though the longest unbroken time I’ve worn it was for watching the recent Dune movie, I’d say comfort was on a par. Sound quality is of course very subjective, but I’d say the Quest 2 is better than the Rift S (which isn’t very difficult!) but not as good as dedicated headphones like on the CV1. I’ve got a pair of cans that I sometimes use, but to be honest I’m happy with the standard directed sound from the headband, and maintaining the ability to have the occasional root around in my ear-hole.

Great news! It's not that I want to delete my Facebook account (I have one and actually use it), what I don't want is the constant fear of losing access to said account due to random ban or account theft, thus bricking my headset.

The Quest 2 also works with Bluetooth headphones, and it has a headphone jack in the side too.

But mostly I've found it OK - especially with the Elite strap. 🤷‍♀️

Too much latency with Bluetooth though, so I don't count that as a plus. Tried it with my Melomania 1's on my G2 because I hate the off the ear phones that come with it. Ended up using wired M6 Pro's. I wish the G2 had a headphone jack.

Im just about to purchase Q2 but I have to ask. Does Q2 when used for pc games only play oculus store games and steam vr games? I have Elite Dangerous from frontier store and I prefer to play games without steam vr enabled. I also have another workaround to avoid steam vr. I think its called composite vr and its a dll file that makes me play steam games on my cv1 without enabling the steam vr.

I play Elite though the Frontier launcher, and when I play Steam games like SkyrimVR then I mostly use the opencomposite dll injection so I don’t need to start up SteamVR - so in answer to your question: no, you’re not limited to Oculus store games 🙂

Yes, OpenComposite works fine with the Quest 2... although I don't use it often as I don't have a problem with Steam VR (which also works). 🤷‍♀️

As Arioch says above, you're not limited to Oculus store games.

Recently I've seen posts that the Reverb G2 is available at discount, and it downscales beautifully - at same resolution I recall it being easier on the hardware while looking better than a Rift S according to MRTV (YT channel). There is practically no SDE which goes a long way, and inside-out tracking means no lighthouses and associated cables.
Before you get the Reverb, make sure that you have a Display Port on your system. My laptop didn't and no adapter would connect it to my HDMI port. I just sent it back and ordered the Oculus
