New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Maybe there is tiling on the planets i've visited, never seen anything like in the screenshots/videos people are posting. Either im lucky or people are going to out of their way to find this sort of thing.

Well you have seen it, just haven't noticed it. Call that lucky if you like. Personally, it sticks out like a sore thumb to me. Even browsing through the screenshots thread it's all over the place, so there's no need to think it's just the odd pic posted in this thread. Take this recent post for example. Great screenshots right? Well, they really are, but also a great example of the repeating tiles:

Quite possibly i haven't noticed it, therefore it doesn't really matter does it?

I mean, looking at the picture you posted, i'm looking and basically having to squint to see the tiling.

Anyway, FD have said they are aware. Either they will improve it, or they won't. The old proc gen terrain isn't coming back.

So, theoretically, if they just made every body a perfect sphere, the problem would be solved, right?

Nah, we got what, at least 16 million colours to pick from? Probably less chance of repitition than with the current tiles.

You're absolutely right. Plenty of people have posted here recently that FDev updating colours has made the repeating terrain far less obvious. ;)

Slightly unrelated, but I haven't been out in the black since Update 5: did they happen to fix the awkward desaturisation effect that occurs within a certain distance of your ship/SRV/character? For example, seeing a bright red surface in orbit, but as soon as you're skimming the surface all the terrain within a certain radius just turns into a vale red.

... or really don't give a damn? That being my favourite option, mine eye doth not get offended by a game...
I kinda do give a damn, albeit maybe not so much to get really worked up about it at this stage. Too much things they still need to smooth out (performance first and foremost) which (in my own opinion of course) take prevalence over this issue. Firstly, although I do share the worries about how "unique" every planet is, they did say they were still looking into it and it's not horrifically bad in the sense that there are for instance literal holes in a body and other triple A glitches. Secondly, once they adjust and finetune it to the point that 99,9% of the people are happy with it, it would probably mean that all the planets will undergo another transformation. More things to explore (again)!

Not worth getting worked up about at all, it is a piece of entertainment software, it has flaws, it is also entirely optional to play.

There has been some effort made by Frontier to mask the worst of using tiled assets, EDO bodies present much better than on release, maybe more will be done to improve things further, I suppose it all depends on how long it took a team to 'bake' the current assets, and if the art / PG forlk ar able to produce sufficient tiles with enough variety to 'fool' the players well enough to not see repeating assets.

I think the tiling was very visible at launch, but not now. I'm always looking and I never see any these days. Stuff looks pretty great, actually.

An unusual comment given that FDev are still "looking into it" and have not mentioned changes to terrain tiling in any of their nine updates, or change logs, since Odyssey dropped.

And none of the examples I posted at the start of this thread have changed at all.

And then there's the still-obvious repeating tiles in the screenshots thread. Eg. this one posted a few hours ago, with the same tile repeated three times, to the left, right and in front of the ship. And these guys aren't trying to highlight repeating tiles at all. They're just posting cool screenshots. 🤷‍♂️

But then maybe I'm just a reverse-conspiracy theorist - y'know posting real evidence still confirming the same issues FDev have already acknowledged. ;)

I wouldn't have suggested anything like that of you.... As you mentioned, Frontier have acknowledged it, but why should that stop a good complain?

It is obvious that pattern recognition can be a highly developed irritant... To each their own.

I've noticed it a couple of times, but then I haven't been looking for it by hitting bodies with high colour levels so I don't think it is fixed yet as already stated.

I hope they sort it, but I have to say I've only ever really spotted these after it being mentioned on here. I do spot rocks that are identical across planets, mainly because the duplicates are so unique looking that they stand out.

It's always a little surprising to me how many people end an otherwise reasonable discussion with words like, "I'm happy, you're not". Since I'm sitting beachside on the glorious south coast of NSW, Australia, all I can bring myself to say is, with full sincerity, have a wonderful Christmas break and new year everyone! :)

Sad

I liked this game. I think that I won't come back personally. Perhaps I will try out Star Citizen the other day.
Honestly speaking the exploration was a really cool feature. Now the FPS is super low, ground experience is basically useless as it's no better than AI from Deus Ex, and the exploration became a meme.

Is there anything other left than just never-ending grinding?
I can grind in real life for money. I don't think that these people are serious if the point of the game is grinding for some -coins.

Like, what will I do with these credits or ships? Explore these fake planets, or do some boring minecraft-level quests?

I don't know what to say honestly. I think that players who spent much more time than I playing this game are the ones who already told everything that was to be told.

I might have been a bit too "picky" the first moment I tried to approach Odyssey. I thought that some of my remarks were not the best, but coming back after so much time I realize that in fact it's even worse than I assumed.

5 hours of Yamiks video sums it up...

Rest in peace.

What?

WOW I had no idea they've done this .. I don't get it, did Frontier hire some cheap indian or russian programmers just so they can quickly push the game out?
It sure has signs of extremely poor programming, similar to what those greedy "money grabbers" do. No racisms intended here, but usually indian and russian devs are the ones who copy paste as much as possible so that they can push broken game out with minimal efforts and call it "finished".

I don't understand, why it was necessary to change how planets were generated? works fine in Horizons ... why was it necessary to completely break it in Odyssey? On top of that, it's extremely laggy .. I can run Forza Horizon 5 in 4k with AMD upscaler on "Quality" and it runs solid 60fps with 50-90% GPU usage, while in Odyssey I have AMD upscaler on "performance" and I barely get 15 - 45 fps in stations / bases and GPU usage is always 100%, sometimes on planets it randomly lags down to like 30 fps too.

Perhaps devs will migrate Odyssey onto Unreal Engine 5, it seems very impressive so far. from what i've heard, UE5 also supports massive scale random generator, so it should work fine for planets.
