Why did VR users buy Odyssey knowing FD stance on no longer supporting VR?

I didn't buy Odyssey for the reason in the title. Just wondering why others might have bought it.
Thanks!

Ideally from those who bought it as an expansion, not as LEP and
Feel free to sell it to those who haven't bought it yet etc

Because it actually supports VR except for on-foot stuff which is 2D pancake unfortunately. IMHO the latter is a rather silly decision and maybe driven by political reasons, for the ext cam proves these parts could run VR too and 2D should be optional, but FD decide. Otherwise, for me, it's an upgrade to Horizons despite some glitches still, and I play 100% VR on old hardware (CV1 + 1070).

If they had sticked to their original announcement of not supporting VR at all, I would not have bought it too. Easy as that.

Can anyone point me to FDev's statement of never supporting VR?

I remember the original statement from FDev was that on foot VR would be supported when it could be supported properly, and following the salt they gave in and introduced the current (limited) implementation. Since then I've seen they have no further announcements to share multiple times, but I don't recall any other statements.

I have however seen many players and forum salters, twisting those statements into "never going to be supported", or "VR isn't supported in Odyssey at all".

So, with that out the way, why did I buy Odyssey?
Because even though at the time I had no interest in on foot FPS gameplay, it was the next step into the Elite universe. If FDev has a very long roadmap that they are working through in order to bring a final product, with atmospheric worlds and huge cities, then you have to see the logic in tackling small settlements and scaling up.

In short, I bought because I have the patience to believe in a roadmap that delivers the best Elite experience, including eventual VR.

P.S. When I removed my VR and played on-foot, I actually had a load of fun.

Same as people who are ranting about the lack of ship interiors twisting Arthur's words into an absoloute statement that FD will never do ship interiors.

What's a day on the forums without some drama though?

Flying down to atmospheric planets, driving on atmospheric planets. That's what VR users asked - pleaded - fdev to include when they initially said no VR at all for EDO. It's worth it.

Of course now some of the angry ex-boyfriends of the VR community rage about it, but goalposts appear to be easily moved.

I am confused about whether or not to buy EDO. If I purchase EDO, I will need to get at least two copies - my wife and I. The plan is for my wife to have my 1070 for her CV1 when I eventually upgrade.

How well does it run compared to Horizons?

I fully appreciate the fact the all the activities I enjoy (all cockpit activities) should end up working in VR because FD said the will support existing cockpit gameplay. At the moment, the large list of required fixes for elements that work in Horizons but don't in Odyssey is testament to the fact things aren't yet working as advertised in Odyssey. Will they every get fixed?

I am old school and vote with my money. But in this case will voting with my money make it more likely FD continue fixing the elements they have agreed they will keep working for VR?

I did have the LEP, and after the Alpha, I bought Odyssey for my alt account.

Why? Because they changed their mind on supporting VR for the most important aspect of Odyssey for me: flying my ship over, and operating my SRV(s) on, the new planets we have access to. The fact that I actually like aspects of the on-foot gameplay is a nice bonus, and their "virtual monitor" is sufficient for those aspects, so I don't need to take my headset off to enjoy them.

Do I wish Frontier would fully support VR on foot? Yes! I'd very much like to interact with the Elite universe in full room scale with my motion controllers, primarily because seated-VR using controllers or keyboard/mouse is a nauseating experience for me. And heaven forbid if they go the abomination of a hybrid experience that NMS ultimately settled on. But ED is, was, and always will be primarily sci-fi spaceship flight simulator for me, and as long as they continue to support that gameplay in VR, I will continue to buy the expansions for my alt, who I will be using primarily for exploring far beyond human space.

Well, it runs considerably faster than the Alpha or the initial release, but not as smooth as Horizons (stable 45fps ASW). And it has certain glitches, in particular a nasty antialias flickering Horizons hasn't. Still, I find me playing EDO exclusively instead of Horizons since Patch 5 or so. It's a subjective thing mostly, let's say EDO runs fast enough I can play for hours without physical effects including the SRV with better graphics, and that's what counts for me, but I'm rather hard-boiled in this direction. I doubt it will get faster without a hardware upgrade at this point, so the decision is mostly whether I want to play EDO stuff or not. I decided I want to, YMMV ;)

Is that flickering on the fix list? Do you think it is a worthwhile one to campaign to push to the top like the orbit lines?

I use a Track IR here and can look around everywhere :)

yes track IR is supported on foot and i think on the long term VR will be also, but the FPS is simply too bad now..
maybe use a track ir while u wait till the game is so improved in fps that vr is doable again? oo
i think there must be some patches and improvemends made still till vr is officially supported again?
same thing with consoles.. they are not forgotten, the fps is not good enough to do it now

I love how they had their exact demands met, and then got angry because they got what was asked for.

And people wonder why I struggle to take VR elitists seriously.

No complaints here. In fact I didn't want that on-foot thing at all and ship interiors neither, including cockpit cats and such silly stuff, and I can live with the Grey Burkha pretty well. The decision to restrict any on-foot gameplay to 2D is silly mainly because it makes that part really feel as a bolt-on without reason. Which will not hinder me from enjoying FC interiors even the more. It's ok as it is. No goalposts, nothing. And let's face it: ED - at least in the form we knew and loved - is dying, however you may put it. You can feel it every day again. Long gone are the times when BBC brought stories of the first Thargoid sightings in ED, and the community not only is diverted between two games now (and I'm one of the few VR supporters in EDO), but has changed significantly too, many of the veterans (and we have many of them in our ranks) either silently left or just play the forums because of stuphz memes or whatever. Who would really care about VR Elitists or Pancake Paupers nonsense? With 17 carriers in a system, and still you don't meet a single CMDR in Open anymore? Make a doom joke if you will :)

For this part, I gave you a like.

Well, if anything, you see I still care at least. Everything I hinted at is what I see daily in my lists, discord channels, and personal encounters, it's a multi-factor impression and sometimes, I feel like a hypocrite when stating otherwise. Make of that what you will. 🍻
