Type 9/10 for Exploration?

I would like to say in the beginning that, I am a fan of Lakon and only want to fly Lakon ships. Don't ask why, it just happened. :D

Currently, I own a DBX and a Crusader and love them both. For obvious reason, I cannot use the Crusader as multirole. I use it exclusively for PvE. DBX without question an excellent explorer. I can carry everything I need if I don't mind dropping the FSD booster. I need one more ship to complete my dock. Now and then I like to mine and haul crap for the good of the galaxy.

So, since my list is limited to Lakon, I am not seeing other option besides T9 and T10. With T9 I see I sacrifice jump range and speed for that extra cargo. T10 on the other hand despite being a floating city jumps further than my Crusader. I don't have credits to fully kit out either of them, but willing to work towards it. I do understand either of them will require some engineering to get them usable.

Any T9/10 explorer out there has some feedback?

No I do not want Asp. I really hate the engine sound, I really do!

No.
They're too big, too slow and they cannot really turn in Supercruise.

However, Type-6 can make a nice explorer.

Warning, spoilers ahead! Not sure about the T9, but T10 can make a delightful explorer (if you're not in a hurry to get anywhere). It can pack everything without much range loss, it runs very cool when scooping, has a good view like most Lakons, and those 8 engines at the back look spectacular and make the most beautiful noises. Obvious downside is that it handles like a city block (albeit still feels better in supercruise than the T9)

Aside from landing issues, any ship is as good as another, if you're not pushing for one extreme performance (like maxing jump range, for example).
I like how the T10 handles, all in all it's not as bad people picture it.
Lakon have superb canopies, and I have done exploration in the Keelback and the Type-7 (my favourite ship).
Go for it and don't look back!

You can get another couple of SRV bays in there without really affecting your jump range much. That's the good thing about chonky ships, you can add a bit of mass and it doesn't hurt the range much.

Only going out into the black with just one SRV is just asking to lose it and be left without a SRV. While you're at it, add a SLF bay as well.

While i love the style of the type 9/10, for exploration it will be a pain due to the poor SC manouverability.

If going with Lakon, i'd recommend the type 7. It makes a decent explorer and you still have plenty of module slots.

Yeah, did a lot of traveling in my Type 6 as my first exploration ship, according to my stats just a little over 230,000ly, it's got a nice view, turns really nicely and can land just about anywhere, if you want a Lakon for an explorer and don't need a huge cargo capacity the Type 6 is the one you want.

I enjoy the T6 as an exploration vehicle. The T9 and T10 are too large for planetary work, though. Even my DBX has trouble landing near some of the biology sites. I guess if you don't plan to land on planets and just explore systems using the FSS and DSS it'd be ok.

I do like T7 frame very much. This would have been my pick if it only had one Med hard point to fit a seismic launcher for deep core mining. I do mostly exploration, but I also like the mining duties sometimes and haul stuff. Maybe I am sacrificing too much for the tasks I may do 30% of the time?

I like immersion. Somehow, thinking myself a character from FireFly and do 'jobs' to make living is very immersive. My DBX is my personal toyota. My crusader is, well, its a crusader. I am looking for that one more ship I can do everything in most of the time. Flying around in that huge T7 all by myself with no crew seats although breaks immersion, I can live with it. I heard lot about T7 heat issue, which I can deal with using engineering. But the lack of a med slot I cannot do anything about. Same for T6.

Thinking about the T9/10 and trying out some mock ship builds, I can see now why some people prefer Beluga. It seems like it does address some short fall of the lakon giants. Its not a bad looking ship, but it is little too posh for my taste and no lower view :D DBX has spoiled me. I like to see ground during landing or when flying around closer to the surface. I am unsure if I can be persuaded to buy my 3rd and last ship from SK. :D

I do value all the feedback you all have provided thus far! I am not pushing for min-max. I dont mind sacrificing some jump range for more convenience. From raw numbers, it does seem T10 might be better than T9 from manoeuvrability point and slightly increased jump range. I am however concerned about points made in previous replies regarding landing and SC issues. My life so far had been revolving around my dbx and crusader. Have not flown any Large ships and no idea how they handle landings. Looking at the blueprints of T10, it is MASSIVE! It seems like it just may have its own gravity pull given how big it is.

This is going to be a long journey of decision-making.........

Massive is an understatement. Here I am standing next to the landing gear of my T-10. Now imagine trying to land on some bumpy planet next to some plant life or geological formations.

Good luck :)

WOAH!!!! Those blueprints did not do any justice portraying the size of this thing!!! I imagined the ship is huge, but this really puts it into perspective. I am not too sure any more making the jump into this thing from my lovely DBX. :D

I really really wish ED had option for NPC crews beyond SLF pilots. A ship size as this is no way designed to be flown solo. A true immersion breaker.

Well, thanks to @Codger , I now have something to think about. I took a krait phantom once to try it out and collect engineering mats from crystal shards. I had trouble finding a landing spot due to very rough terrain. I cannot imagine landing this next to shard sites. I did the same mat collection in DBX and had no trouble. Thing is, I WILL land on planets, lots.

I guess I can always rent one T10 and try some surface landing, SC manoeuvring etc. to get a real feel. I may sit in the cockpit and decide nope, not for me.

Just found out, even if I picked T10, I could not pick it up right now. I live in Carcosa in Colonia and there are no T10 for sale around here. I guess I can make a quick trip to the bubble, buy it and fly it back. I cannot imagine how much it would cost me to ship it from bubble to colonia. :D

About a billion Cr. At least transporting a PvE Corvette was in that ballpark, 1.1 billion plus some change IIRC. No biggie. :)
Aahhhh!!! I am dizzy just from reading the message. In a way I should not be too surprised because it cost me 72 mil to transport my fitted Crusader to Colonia. Even if it is not full 1 bil, I am guessing it is going to pretty close.

I must say, I am slowly coming to a conclusion perhaps I am not ready for the T9/10 yet. Since Exobio was introduced, I have not tried it yet. I plan to spend some time going through the ranks and discover some interesting stuff. Trying to land the city block 1000 times on planets may not be desirable once I am really there. Besides when I am going out in the black, it seems like a bad idea to put entire ship and all my (imaginary) crew at risk, since I can do 100% of all exploration in my DBX.

Love my T10.. I use it for everything except PVP. Most of my exploring is short range for stellar/mining scouting purposes (live 1k out anyway); its absolutely fine for fast track bgs based exploration. As previous posters said landing is an issue but only when attempting to find mountainous biologics (which arent usually worth the time for influence anyway). But you will feel safe in a t10 can even handle most high g worlds. You can also pack alot of cargo in it and ship it safely. i carry mining equipment on my smaller slots for fun.
