We meed some sort of update for Consoles

I'm with you on wanting more information on what the future looks like for consoles from FDEV, but they're not going to say anything. No amount of reasoning is going to change their mind, they'll do it on their own schedule
This is exactly what most contributors have been saying when discussing 'news'.

No matter how bitter the pill, it is how it is.
They always say the squeaky wheel gets the grease, so maybe at some point, you'll get an answer to your questions.
I might expect a comment from Frontier if U10 is providing substantial optimisation gains - but will not be holding my breath for it.

@boppa_ I've got to commend you, you are really fighting for some information/updates on consoles. For all your research and suggestions of what you feel Frontier should be doing all that you're getting from FDEV is silence and, shall we call it, "lively" debates with other CMDRS? I'm with you on wanting more information on what the future looks like for consoles from FDEV, but they're not going to say anything. No amount of reasoning is going to change their mind, they'll do it on their own schedule whether anyone thinks it makes good business sense or not. My question for you is, is all this hassle worth it? It's got to be getting tiring. They always say the squeaky wheel gets the grease, so maybe at some point, you'll get an answer to your questions.

How do KCalo. I'm not expecting any response from Frontier as a direct result of my posting on the forum. I think if people are posting with that intent then they should prepare to be disappointed:

The FDev-ers who make the decisions are unlikely to be reading the forum, much less be swayed by a few individuals in an obscure thread picking the bones over one or two sentences from a written statement, made by the CEO, 7 months ago.

You're right though, I do often generate a mandatory response from other forum dwellers, but I think this is what FDev mean when they say 'passionate players' in the annual/interim investor reports😉

The only true statement FD send out are the updates and how well (or not) they are optimized. Until the minimum PC spec drops back to Horizons you'll never see an EDO console version on base consoles. So unless U10 is a miracle, you'll get no console news for a few months yet.

So until that time treat EDO as never coming to PS4 or XB1, and possibly PS5 / XBX (since they come loaded with VRAM that EDO craves).

The way I interpret it is that optimisation is only one facet of the core experience they want to improve. But it is open to any interpretation - as is evident - because the wording is so vague.

We can't count in the PS5 / X simply because there's no information to suggest it's part of the equation, in fact the opposite ("no plans"). Again though, a lack of clear recent information will lead to different interpretations and speculations.

Maybe that's a good thing from Frontier's perspective: it generates chatter?

If the code is not optimised to run on specs as low as last gen consoles, there isn't a lot else Frontier could do to port it over, it just would not be satisfactory. Anything else is just window dressing as without performance requirements being met, it just isn't going to happen.

Only vague to some, I think.

I play EDO on a GT 1030 and.....its horrible, its barely improved at all (down to the VRAM, since I have a capable PC otherwise). A PS4 has 8 Gb of shared RAM, which is far too small a pool when 1 is system reserved (IIRC), 4 needs to be VRAM minimum, and that the game has to then sit in 3 Gb.

FD have to focus on optimization because EDO will simply kill low end hardware. Until that happens a base console version is impossible (IMO).

Part of me wonders if FD are playing a waiting game because the real issue will come fusing EDH with EDO- because if they do that (i.e. running EDH in EDOs engine version) its going to destroy borderline PC users and PS4 / XB1 players experience who don't buy Odyssey.

Yeah, I think getting everyone over onto the new planet tech is phase 1. Then phase 2 will be getting the EDO-specific parts like settlements to work (or not) on old consoles.

As @ADAMtheWELSHMANz said earlier - I think the dwindling console numbers is down to folks playing something else until the rhetoric changes. If/when Odyssey (or some other DLC) comes to consoles, many (some?!) of those players will come back. That's certainly true for me: I've gone back and finished off Ghost of Tsushima and all of it's DLC as well as the DLC for Outer Worlds.

Irrespective of whether "there is no news" qualifies as news, it's the start of a new year and I think it would behove FDev to deliver some kind of statement about the console situation. I agree we cannot expect dates - because they don't know them - but I would (as others and myself on other threads have said repeatedly) like some official clarification on:

1. First and foremost - is Odyssey still planned to come to consoles. And which ones. It looks increasingly like last-gen simply won't be possible. Common sense and spec-comparisons from multiple CMDRs suggest this is the case but have FDev come to the same conclusion? If nothing else, it's been 7 months since the original "it's on hold until PC is good, then we'll look again" and, even if re-stating that they do still intend to do a console version in so-many words seems unnecessary, I think giving that statement alone would be appreciated.

2. Assuming the answer to #1 is "yes" ... for whatever the target console-base is, how is Odyssey currently on the "equivalent" PC? Again, I don't want CMDRs assessments, I want to know FDevs position on this. If a PS(x) equivalent PC can run Odyssey at 30fps at 1080p is that considered acceptable for a console port? Or is it some other numbers? Give us the information and we can do three things:
  • Genuinely gauge progress based on the PC version updates
  • Assess whether what they are targeting on consoles it actually something we'd be interested in and, if not, move on
  • Stop asking them for progress updates every 5 minutes because now we have the information to see how progress is going!
3. If the answer to #1 is "no" ... then what is the future of Elite on console? Will a full character port to PC be provided if you can't bring us along on the roadmap?

I, for one, am genuinely considering moving to PC ... I now have a PC CMDR which is woefully behind ... so before I commit to re-doing everything ... you know ... I'd prefer to stay on PS5 because that way I can just continue to build on my current progress ... but if that either won't be possible or will only be possible in 720p because that's what they're targeting ... I need information to make the decision.

I'll be making no further comments.

I thought about this earlier too. The transfer system FDEV has is complete garbage in a situation like this where someone may want to transfer an account that they have hundreds of hours of credits earned (transferrable) as well as engineer rep (non-transferable), faction rep (also non-transferable), and trade, exploration, combat and CQC ranking they may have earned. If FDEV decides that they can't bring EDO to consoles, they should at least have a better account transfer system. As it is when you transfer accounts you start off brand new with a load of credits. But then you have to start building everything back up again. Can it be done? Sure. But it's a lot of time to rebuild something that could just as easily be transferred. They haven't done anything like this yet so I don't expect them to make the change now. But it is a pain in the ass starting over, regardless of how many billions of credits you have.

Cross-save accidentally briefly sort-of worked for a period of several months, where you could log in your xbox cmdr on PC resulting in a dodgy alphanumeric string as your cmdr name, so clearly it was in the pipeline at one point, which makes sense given how most online games have been adding it as standard over the last 5 years or so. It really is a basic, expected, and necessary feature these days and I cannot see why it's not been implemented yet, given how it just means more players buying copies of it for all the platforms they own, to play with more friends.

Probably the same reason as before - it requires some sort of reliable agreement between companies, based on sales of stuff beyond the base game. If they can't agree, or don't want it to happen, then it won't.

Edit - by before, I mean every other time this has been asked.
