To Solo Play Players: If You Could Disable PVP, Would You Play in Open Play Mode Instead?

Well safe haven to level up, and inside one race you cannot grief and so on....
Tbh, with my favourite one (now dead, and if it wasnt it would be dated), not a safe haven to level up at all, 1-35 in RF Online took me about 2 weeks and was all you could do really in the safe zone. 49-50 alone took me over a month, and i was playing it like a job, with one of the best guilds in the game to help me.

Safe space to learn the game, sure. And there were ways to get XP in instances with just your group, but you had to farm the keys in a PvP enabled zone.

And just to point at the massive elephant in the room, Elite has been around since 1984 and until Elite: Dangerous, was ONLY single player.

So there are about 30 years of Elite history with no mp/mmo game mechanics. Elite was you vs the game world (environment), and considering the problems an mmo brings to that story and history, Frontier have done pretty well, and for us traditional Elite players that have been here since 1984, having the solo option is kind of non-negotiable to the extent we want to carry on that 30 year story, rather than play whack-a-mole and 'watch how high i can pee' with others ;)

There should only be open mode. You've got the opportunity to engineer a tough ship and learn how to fly it defensively or otherwise. Decent engineering and adequate piloting skills aren't unobtanium.

You have to ask why fdev left the situation (PvP) as such, almost in flux...by that l mean lack of cohesion, no real direction, (except cqc which is also borked).
It's like they dabbled, not really knowing the outcome.
Things like ramming and griefing must've been anticipated? No I honestly don't think they were. At the time.
Fact is pvpers are a smart canny bunch who fly the best ships following a meta or not as is my case.
PvP is cutting edge. Best vs the best, and others, like me hehe. Who want to be but lack the high end skills like flying full fa off (try that with a hotas) using kbm because it's more accurate and stable.
Their ships are as far as one can go as regards shields weps potency etc.

And yet because of a few D**kh**ds (Griefers) their marginalised and thought of as the proverbial bully.
Sounds about right.
Great pvp games are few and far between. Elite and l kid you not, has the potential to be a legend.
But.... Ti's not the case. As pvp is merely optional and the bgs/pp manipulated via solo/pg there's little point in it apart from duelling or team vs team etc.
There's huge scope for incorporating a better balanced game moving the pillars around a bit making it far more realistic as regards strategy and tactics within the bgs/pp.
It's in my opinion a huge opportunity missed to justify both pvp and more inclusion with the heart of elite. Its background simulation.
Yes I know the rhetoric. It's not going to happen it's unfair its anti solo yada yada.
But that's not my point.
To conclude, it's potentially the greatest pvp game of all time. But not, no sir it isn't, and never will be in its current form.

Your answer is excellent for:
Why explorers still didn't open galaxy at least 1% after 7 years?
Consider that I got the message from Felicity years ago.
At the current rate I should unlock the final Bubble engineer in about a week.
We've been in lockdown for a substantial portion of that period.

There should only be open mode.
In the opinion of some, certainly. Not all players share that opinion though - and we all bought a game with three game modes which affect the shared galaxy (even if some players can't accept that others can choose not to play with them / aren't forced to play with them).
You've got the opportunity to engineer a tough ship and learn how to fly it defensively or otherwise. Decent engineering and adequate piloting skills aren't unobtanium.
Indeed - players have that opportunity, however some lack the inclination to fly around in a tough ship simply because it's not how they want to play the game - and other players can't tell them how to play the game. Some players don't play this game for the combat element....

Other modes were promised in kickstarter and people stumped up money on those promises, so "there should only be Open mode" isn't just exaggerating a preference, it's factually wrong.

As for "opportunity", I could indeed engineer a combat ship and fly it defensively, but I don't take up every opportunity presented to me; I'd run out of time if I did. In a game like this one I just do what I enjoy. No-one else gets to decide what that is.

Explorers can sell data to the enemy. Just saying... :D
Explorers mostly sell their data to the first port they arrive after returning to human inhabitated space. They just don't know who or if this is an enemy of some other faction concerning some strange PP or BGS mechanic. So I personally would expect from you to get in touch with this explorer and negotiate what to do. I personally would be open for some suggestions from you where I should sell my data instead if you can explain to me your intentions. I hope you do this and not blasting some poor explorers without them even knowing why or what the background is.
