I've read a lot about sanctions recently but its mildly surprising to read about the one imposed on Console Commanders by FDEV today.
I say mildly because the writing has been on the wall for months. Performance issues on PCs for Odyssey (even after ten updates) and the embargo of console communication from FDEV was the red flag flying in the faces of Console Commanders. I'm not sure if this decision is down to lack of resources (hello F1!), or if Cobra Engine is just not good enough. I expected last-gen consoles to be dropped, but I've seen nothing from Odyssey to suggest its beyond the capabilities of PS5 and Xbox Series S|X.
I would say my ED adventures on Xbox One/X/Series X have come to an end, but in truth that happened for me almost a year ago, there was nothing in Odyssey which made me excited to play it. I sold my Carrier months ago and logged off without checking on the whereabouts of my 40-ship fleet which, sadly I won't use again.
I still checked up on the game, hoping for news about consoles or even where the game was heading next. I would have been happy with an update for next-gen Consoles for Horizons, sadly we won't even get that.
So, after jumping into the cockpit during Xbox Early Access back in June 2015, its disappointing to sign off, even more so when Console Commanders have been told by some people over the past few months to 'wait'. Well, the wait hasn't been rewarded, and as a F1 fan I'll remember that when deciding to buy FDEV's F1 management game.
I do have a Nvidia Shield TV, but seeing how FDEV have treated Console Commanders doesn't compel me to sign up for a new ED account via GeForce Now. I'll give (and have been giving) my money to developers who actually deliver on their promises. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a game to delete from my Xbox's SSD.
o7 all.
