Console Update

I've been wait for Odyssey on consoles for at least, when it was announcement. I'm now very disappointed. I wanted to see and together with PC players join up to exploring planets on-foot.

We're get at least three strong hits: Anarchy strong security and influence drop, Fleet carriers problem (If someone remembers, by some time we won't be able to move our fleet carriers) and now this. Sometimes, it's need to protest against that decision, and I don't wanna see empty systems without being able to piracy other players. Needs bugs fixing, optimalisation fixing... there's a lot of things, which is need to fixing.

It's need more players here, no less. By doing this, the playerbase will be for sure significally decreased. Don't cancel something, which was started!

They clearly did though. That "we are exploring options but nothing to announce" language was first posted three minutes after DB's original post, and repeated nearly verbatim by multiple staff members. It's quite obvious they've discussed the account transfer question internally before today, don't know the answer yet, knew people would ask this question, and agreed on this statement as the response.
Just a wild guess on my part, but they knew before today that they weren't going to be able to bring EDO to consoles. When you're not sure whether plan A (EDO on consoles) is going to work, you start to consider plan B (transfers for console players to PC). This has been brought up several times in the past...8 months...they've had time to consider and the fact they're "exploring it" means it's not coming.

i would not even concern buying the PC version without seeing a road map for elite as i don't think there is one, i see this as the beginning of the end if they cannot fix odyssey in 6 months they will most likely cancel elite all together and claim they have reach the end of where they can take the game

This is classic fdev and I wonder that anyone is in the least surprised. It is almost like they forget that people actually play their game. They certainly don't understand the players at all. For months this topic has been at the forefront of community conversation. It has taken them all this time to finally admit what most of us already knew (deep down) was coming and still they mess it up. They 'could' have arrived today with the statement and a well thought out (and researched) plan of what they intended to offer to console players who wished to transfer to pc. They ought to have been able to say we can do this for you but we can't do that because of technical limitations or contractual obligations or whatever. However in true fdev style they seem almost surprised that conole players would even want that option. SO we get the usual 'we have nothing to announce at this time'. God knows they have had the time to do it just did not cross their minds. If this does not illustrate the massive disconnect between Fdev and their community then I don't know what would.

I have not actually played since the disgusting launch of Odyssey. It felt like I would be as guilty as them to condone what they did by keep giving them my money. I do not regret my decision despite having played since the begining on pc. They asked us back then to 'judge us by what we do not by what we say.' well I am judging you now Fdev and I find you lacking.

At the risk of sounding "PC privileged", it's so odd to me how people don't own a PC that's even moderately capable of playing games. I read comments like "A free EDO license is not the point if I have to buy a gaming PC at first." and I'm gobsmacked that folks are gamers and don't have even an average gaming computer. Folks are really out here in the gaming world raw-d0gging it with no PC?

I'm not talking about a $3000 behemoth with a 55" OLED or something. You can build a 1080p gaming computer at a reasonable budget. Console gamers are already sitting on big TVs ($400-$1500) and $300-500 consoles with $60 controllers and $75 headsets and maybe even extra peripherals like a keyboard and mouse (+$$). So complaints about "oh a gaming PC is just too much" is a weak argument.

It's just... so odd to me. I refuse to believe that folks in 2022 don't have a PC of any sort. Is it just a Chromebook?

Re-reading this, yeah I guess I am "PC privileged" and this will be a wildly unpopular post. 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, o7 console gamers. Hope FDev can port your stuff over to PC.
For me it's not about the PC hardware. I sit in front of a computer all day with my job, I'd much prefer to sit back and relax and mash a few buttons on a controller. And...I have a mac, so that doesn't help me here anyway.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
I have to admit, I thought the reason for silence was because the devs were unionizing.

They probably didn't make the decision to cancel consoles entirely until a few days ago, which game them enough time to discuss account transfers but not enough time to figure out if the logistics and finances would be feasible. They probably knew that console development being canceled was a possibility for eight months, but still tried to make it feasible, hence why they didn't explore account transfers until the final decision was made.

this decision is unacceptable, do you really think it will improve the development of the game? logical that no, we have to fight that continue to console version, we have to fight for crossplay, we have to fight for them to listen to us and take the game in the right direction, we have to fight for the team of the game be enlarged, we have to fight for the ideas of the community to be heard, we have to fight for the project manager to be substituted, things are bad and will only get worse, if we are passive now it will be the end.

As a console CMDR with significant investment in the game, I am so annoyed at this. Even more so as I run a Series X. Why on earth did FDev even consider, and waste any time, trying to get this working on previous gen? Why not develop the new engine to be cross-platform like proper developers do, and bring it to SeriesX/PS5. It's not like FDev are pioneering some voodoo of game development, competent devs have been doing dev like this for years. Just lazy, and untalented devs, and a whole bunch of can't be arsed.

It is what it is...I think the least FDEV could do would be to transfer console accounts to PC if they choose too.

I'm happy to buy another copy of ED along with Odyssey on my PC. Regrind everything? Come on.

If it is a hassle to transfer accounts, have a 30 day window when console players can make the change.
