Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

IQ tests in general were largely created to help armies deal with the vast pool of recruits during WW1, and played a big role in helping psych testing get a foothold in non-clinical civilian life. And to be a lieutenant in the Dutch army you have to go through four years of military academy, which is certainly not open to random idiots. Then again, your average 18-yo private 2nd class in the mech infantry isn't going to win any Nobel prize soon either. :p
The UK armed forces are slightly different since we don't have a conscription requirement. The IQ test at the door is to sort out where you actually end up as a serviceman/woman...outside of personal choice of course. The higher technical trades like the Royal Engineers, the Armoured Corps, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME)...all the way to RAF trades or Royal Navy require more than truck loads of cannon fodder.

Most services also have a junior entry level at 16, loosely named 'Junior Leaders Regiments' for those of a particular aptitude where those younger applicants complete two years training, military and educational, before joining the regular army in their regiment/service of choice at 18...those usually end up as the career focused senior non commissioned ranks of the future...the mainstay of UK armed forces.

I spent my childhood at a military academy...it was planned (by my father) for me to go on from there to Sandhurst military academy aged 18 and enter service life as a junior orifice (2nd Lieutenant) with little to no choice to which army regiment I ended up serving in...I had other ideas since I left voluntarily at 16 and joined the Junior leaders regiment, Royal Armoured Corps for 2 years before joining my families traditional heavy cavalry regiment aged 18...best laid plans eh? :D

You deflect because saying SC as far better graphics is too hard for you. I understand. And you can't invoke anymore the slideshow since the start of gen12 implementation, bad news.

It’s true that SC isn’t a slideshow anymore. But getting 30 fps, while adequate, really isn’t considered acceptable these days… as I’ve been told repeatedly. But as a gamer in her 50s, I learned to game on devices that struggled to get 12 fps, so I may be a bit biased on that front. ;)

As for graphics quality… they may look good, but the bar has been raised over the last 10 years, and they're no longer clearing that... at least among games that have a budget in excess of 100 million. This is pretty sad, considering that CIG has raised over half a billion. The fact that you're constantly comparing Star Citizen's graphics to a game that has a tithe of its budget is simply pathetic. Especially when that game is playable in VR, and Star Citizen, despite having sold backers that functionality, isn't even remotely close to getting sufficient frame rates to do so.

But graphics aren't really what games are actually about. They're interactive fiction, gameplay which is used to drive a narrative, either the developers own and/or allowing the players to create their own, and on that front things are pretty grim. Even the most basic game loops expected in this kind of game are mostly missing, extremely bare bones, or broken. CIG has also presold many more advanced game loops that still aren't in the game. The server technology which is so important to an MMO is in such a poor state that errors start creeping in after several hours of use. After eleven years of development and half a billion dollars, CIG still hasn't gotten even its most critical core technologies to work to industry standards, let alone exceed them as promised.

Furthermore, the NPCs of this game, which are usually necessary to bring a game to life, usually simply stand there stiffly, staring blankly into space like some existential horror story even on fresh servers (but at least they're not T-posing!). When they're in action, they often plummet into the uncanny valley hard. They're slow to react to player actions, their facial expressions are distorted, and often react inappropriately. This is far from the NPC behavior that CIG has sold to players, let alone close to meeting today's industry's standards. On this front, CIG is constantly being shown up by games that have budgets less than a percentage of theirs, which is outright embarrassing.

But at least Star Citizen looks good... in screenshots, at least, and when compared to a 50 million dollar game of comparable age. But they struggle to produce the gameplay of a 5 million dollar game. So for half a billion dollars, CIG has so far delivered less than a tithe of what other studios would be able to produce, and most of that in graphics.

Well done, CIG. Well done.

Yay, more motion!

TAG's editor is working through their back catalogue of buggy gameplay again:

Source: https://youtu.be/Cc_QApgLceY

Hopefully they'll get to the jackfrags era soon :)

EDIT: Oh wait, that's an earlier compilation from March. Still fun though :). (Lots more material to come in their latest Twitch adventures...)
It’s funny how the more LittleAnt claims there are less and less bugs, the more dedicated bug related footage seems to come out.

  • Massively over hyped as "The future of gaming" the developer even wrote a "behind the scenes" book to accompany the release.
  • "Open development" via extensive magazine/TV coverage of the process.
  • Development technical babble used as marketing "Intelligent AI system", "Full ray traced graphics"
  • First game to use an interior designer!
  • Top level screenshots and fidelity first design.
  • Tie in novel and soundtrack, proposed toy-line, cinematic trailers
  • Requires a massive amount of storage space and "next-gen" hardware
  • Extended development time.
  • Delays and moving of goal posts....
  • People put record amounts of cash down in advanced pre-orders (basically invented the pre-order business model)
Game ended up being frequently listed amongst the worst games of all time

All sounds very familiar

..and that was Rise of the Robots in 1993 ("You won't want to play Street Fighter 2 anymore": actual press statement)

This is the game that infamously had an invisible wall over opponents heads, which stopped you from jumping over them. In a 2d fighting game.

In 2012-2022 CR re-invented it as NPCs T-posing on chairs in an MMO.

I can only assume the hard shilling with all the nollocks (aka lies) is due to some form of profit LA reaps from SCs existence. He's been disproven so often, called out time and time again but keeps spreading the lies and disinfo.

It would appear that LTNTDan didn't do well at mathematics :ROFLMAO:
Now now Stuart, we all know how deep your appreciation for Elite goes, and I personally thank you for all the hard work along the years moderating ED's subreddit, but did you really need to resort to personal attacks again?

Just because someone points out that SC has way better graphics than ED?

From all things, getting so triggered by a factual claim not only shows poor form but also somewhat a strong emotional bias.
I understand the last years haven't been easy, specially for those who've spent years preaching SC demise along it's total absence of gameplay predicates.
Seeing ED players making the move to SC after such long waited and anticipated expansion while loosing some of it's best content creators sure was a hard blow but that isn't a reason to resent SC now is it?

After all, it's the natural evolution of things. Those who invest and dedicate a lot into improving their game will evolve at a higher rate than those who don't.
And about "respecting player time" I meant it. (Always find ironic seeing gamers waste time arguing about games wasting their time eh)

Travelling to cities is optional and it's something I only do occasionally so I don't think it's detrimental to my experience. It adds to the immersion and the sense of scale of the planets.
What I feel is well complemented with SC good game design core of not relying on, what I feel, is a very outdated model of grind for the sake of forcibly dragging a games life extension. Specially hard to force yourself into that kind of grind without thinking, "Why bother?" Specially when the games future is uncertain.

At least, in SC one can be competitive in PVP or PVE from day one thanks to the ability to fly other players ships and or player trading. Even a solo player can getr access to competitive ships in a very short time thanks to the renting system. What matters the most is the player skill after all.
So, there's no tiresome engineering grind there (thank god). You grind credits and you buy your components and that's it. The FPS component is even more straightforward. Since you can just loot every item from both NPC's and Players and use them whatever you like. Rewarding player skill is, again, the main factor.

So yes, it's no wonder that gamers from more grindy games move on to SC, despite it's buggyness and capacity to irate the most patient gamer, at it's core, it already provides many fun and engaging gameplay loops in a seamless and sandbox online space.

And that so many players feel ok to play a game as buggy as SC is right now, all while also knowing that everything they "work for" is gonna be lost to a wipe sooner or later, is a great testament to how good the core gameplay already there is.

No that wouldn't help. Please, just show me a space game with better graphics than SC. It's easy no ? Some guys say here that SC graphics are outdated.

Answer : you can't.

All of them Ant. Because they’re released games. The category that SC is still yet to fulfill ;)

And they got to that point by sensibly doing the game first, and the art flourishes second. Rather than handing their devs the Sisyphusian task of maintaining current gen graphics for assets which are constantly altering, as they accommodate previously undesigned and unimplemented gameplay systems. For over a decade…

I’ll happily grant you that SC is the best looking space alpha around. It’s just not necessarily a very wise thing for it to be…

Now, your turn :)

Show me another space franchise where the inventory system can kill you ;)

Wait, was that a challenge ? Do you know there are quite a few space games that DO look better than SC, and some that are now being produced that will look even more next gen by then ? What's the point ? Any UE4 game looks better to start with, of course UE5 will completely override everything else... And that's just picking the most popular engine.

He will pivot to the 'no true spacegame' fallacy then. It's not worth the effort. :p
