Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I once started creating a bird-flight sim using unity, probably a decade ago. I probably put about 10 hours in to it, pulled in some graphics assets and add-ons and started delving in to the code to customise it for what I wanted. Changed some things the way I wanted, broke some other things.

This is what CIG are doing. No, they are not creating RAGE or Creation Engine.
If you say so (gen 12, raymarching, planetary nav mesh, building block, 64bits position, planetary tech, multigrid, etc)

CIG isn't developing a full scale engine, like RAGE, Creation Engine, or Unreal. They really should've invested in creating their own engine, one capable of doing what they needed it do do. What CIG is doing is absurd, and part of the reason why Star Citizen is in the state is in....
Many here have said this, offering seemingly well informed and experienced opinions with cogent arguments - from about v2 of this juggernaught thread.

I wonder if they didn't do this because a) Chris really doesn't understand modern game development b) allegedly 'doesn't take advice well' and so c) didn't hire the requisite skills.

And then it would be the magic Germans who would solve everything, along with any number of bejesus patches, then 64bits... and then Ilfonic... then Erin joined (even I thought that this might help)... and then SQ42 was announced at Citizen-con by Chris as definitely arriving December 2019 (I think)... only it didn't... and and and and... ...and here we still are...

In other news, I'm going back to watch Groundhog Day. Again.

Oh, and I sincerely hope CIG get anything into beta before Starfield 2 arrives.

It was d) Crytek was in trouble financially, were desperate enough to be willing to work for free with Chris Roberts to gain greater visibility, and Chris Roberts good friend and business partner also happened to be Crytek's lawyer at the time, meant that what could've been a mutually benefitial contract was absurdly lopsided in Robert's favor... and Roberts still saw fit to violate it. Repeatedly.

I notice you have opted not to respond to this question:

The “tools”, “as much time as needed”, “alpha”, “new roadmap is good” etc. Not a single shred of doubt or serious critique among all your participations in this forum, pretty much exclusively at the SC thread. And a complete disregard and disrespect for all the money paid due to the hype of content announced for specific dates that have been missed year after year without any offer for refunds.

Not even some of the most fan of fans, such as Morphologis for exemple, is capable of such purity of white knighthood, and will indeed express doubts or reasonable critiques on occasion. Your post opinions on the other hand defy all logic… unless you are directly or indirectly compensated in some form by CIG or have a vested interest otherwise. Is that perhaps your case @LittleAnt ?

You're missing the point. All those other game engines are proprietary game engines designed and built in house by the companies that own them. The FrankenEngine Ci¬G are ineptly tinkering with is CryEngine 3 with portions of slightly improved netcode from Amazon Lumberyard...nothing more.

Ci¬G don't own the rights to it, nor do they have any rights to further distribute it. They merely have some form of licence from Crytek (after an out of court settlement) to use and modify it for use in Star Citizen...perhaps in Sqn 404, but I strongly believe that Ci¬G have switched game engines for that, guessing purely from the extensive and protracted delays, the strange secrecy surrounding it's development and the all hands to the pumps activity for Sqn 404 over the last 2 years from Ci¬G...added to Crytek reserving the right to re-open another separate legal case against Ci¬G when and if Sqn 404 actually becomes a reality.

Although a change of game engine is unlikely unless it's to a newer build of CE, we'll have to wait and see on both those counts :)

And of course Crytek produced the fluffer-reel for Chris's original pitch, where he presented a show reel as evidence that work was already, seemingly, well under way. But it wasn't.

As hilarious as that would be, especially given the apparent payout for extended Cryengine access, I doubt they could really maintain SQ42/PU cross-development (or the illusion of the same) in that situation. Hanlon's razor suggests it's all still in the ongoing frankenengine build, for me.

I reckon the new Cryengine license was primarily to clear the way for SQ42 to be published as a standalone game without legal challenge.

(And to publish all their future StarEngine successes, in Antland, of course ;))

My issue with the idea that “Roberts didn’t plan this…” is that it’s kind of hard to accidentally establish dozens of shell companies to shuffle funds through, while taking a cut of the action each time. Especially when he did something similar when he was making movies. Including diverting funds from the development of FreeLancer into the phenomenally successful Wing Commander Movie.
That is true, but I see that more as him (more likely Freyermuth) taking maximum advantage of a situation that landed in his lap by accident. No one, especially not Roberts, saw where it would go when he was asking for a measly $2m on KS, but they're definitely now riding it out with no intention of upsetting the golden goose, and that means having no real intention of progressing beyond this lucrative blue-sky "pre-alpha" phase as long as they're continually setting new funding records. I'm not sure "scam"'s the right word for it, though.

I'm just happy to see Erin looking healthier. He was beginning to look like he was exploding in slow motion.

It would be like pulling the tablecloth from under dishes. They built so much crap, and unstable crap at that, on top of it that I think they are definitely stuck with it unless they restart the whole project from zero (and dump the now useless mocap data..).

Wow, you made your own engine from Unity? You could sell it to Robbers, he's been trying to fraud himself an engine but got into a lawsuit with the owners and now his stuck with old frankenengine of yonder generation.
