Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Question: I'm headed back out to the black in the newly improved Phantom. Is it worth fully scanning planets you discover? Is there a formula for which ones to scan?

Thanks in advance.
If you intend to land to investigate the Bio or Geo signs on a planet then you should fully scan and map it, there is a large graphic that someone will have a link for that shows a small picture of every type of planet and how much they are worth.

Earthlike worlds, water worlds, various terraformable worlds are I think high value as are some more exotic gas giants, they are also good value in role play terms.

I always scan any high value ones, and DSS them. Here’s a chart of values.

Duh, silly me, limpets are a "combat mode" thing. When you fire them, they deploy hardpoints...

Or, rather, they require hard points be deployed to be able to fire them...

No that is not correct, you 1) can be in analysis mode (e.g. mining) 2) no hard points were harmed in deploying any limpet.

The fact is you have to click a fire-button to deploy a limpet and if you have "firing deploys hardpoints" set to on* then firing a limpet deploys hardpoints.

* This is probably the second binding that I disable (after jettison all) since inadvertent knocking of a fire button in a station can result in the rebuy screen.

I don’t think so, I use all sorts of limpets when mining and that is all Analysis mode and hard points deploy just fine in Analysis Mode.

So I was right the first time...

@Marvin the Martian this is exactly what I was going to suggest. I tend to map anything worth at least 100,000 CR, which is pretty much everything in the lower left corner and Class II Gas Giants near the top left.

Forgot to mention, I use the Elite Observatory program, along with the Evaluator plugin, when exploring. It automatically highlights any bodies that are worth scanning, according to the value I set (1 million creds). It's just easier than pulling out the system map to check if something was terraformable, basically.

So what I do is FSS everything, then check the values and DSS high-value stuff. I also DSS any biological signal planets.

Thanks! I'll see about getting this all set up.

Core, or old style?

I just recently started using the old style and find it lacking in some areas.

I've got it installed, the two plugins installed (biologist and explorer) and it's running, but I have no idea what to do with it or what to look for.

Here is a detailed break down for Odyssey with the column on the right showing the values for bodies you are "FD" first to discover, "FSS" Full Spectrum Scan scan, "DSS" Detailed Surface Scan and be "FM" First to Map

The latest "What am I up to".
I've decided to go from Elite III to Elite V in trading buy using the Fleet Carrier for trade or supporting laser and core mining activity. Progress on this has already raised the credits I need to buy the remaining services I want on the carrier and pay for as much tritium as I'm likely to use for a few months while maintaining a mythical rainy day saving pot for fleet carrier maintenance and impulse ship purchases.
Earlier this week I discovered a relatively well know Platinum triple overlapping hotspot. Anyone who thinks overlapping platinum hotspots are no better than the centre of a single hotspot needs to come out here and have their mind changed. I've started ignoring any asteroid with less than 25% platinum content as I am often finding an even spread of asteroids in the 35% to 66.67% range and not many with no platinum. Shooting fish in a barrel. I'm using my Python as I can fill 192t inside 40 minutes which is the most I can do in a lunch break. 10 collector limpets, 4 medium mining lasers and a grade 5 weapon focus with superconduits power distributor.
The catch is Parrot's Head Sector EL-Y d83 planet 1 is about 1000ly or two carrier jumps from the bubble. It's only worth it if you can sell to a carrier at a fair price.
If anyone wants to give this mining spot a try between now and Monday, let me know and I will leave my fleet carrier The Silver Citadel parked in orbit around planet 1a (moon) over the weekend. Its paying 245K per ton for platinum with 6270 demand. Services are just repair, refuel and restock (so you can buy limpets here). No shipyard or outfitting changes are possible.
Also paying 725K per to for Rhodplumsite. Nothing special about core mining here, but if you give it a try avoid the Rhodplumsite hotspot nearest the triple platinum hotspot as its dead.

You cannot tell this is a triple very easily from this picture, but the selected hotspot is actually two almost on top of each other with the third one below.
