Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Is there a formula for which ones to scan?
Well, the decision which onews to scan/map is yours. But there is (of course) a formula telling you how much they pay:

There's also a simplified visual aid that gives a good guideline (3.3 version, first instance in Google search was reddit. No idea if somebody updated that picture with Odyssey values):

Edit: last time I went on a long range expedition, I took that picture to my local drugstore and had it printed as a photo in A4 (roughly legal) size to stick next to my screen.

LOL...there are like five or so of those images/links posted in this thread over the last month or so...I posted at least two of them...

I've got it installed, the two plugins installed (biologist and explorer) and it's running, but I have no idea what to do with it or what to look for.
Just let it run. Go to an undiscovered system and FSS everything. Then go look at Observatory to see what it says. There are some settings that turn on pop-up notifiers, too. All the settings are in the Core section. For Explorer make sure "High Value Body" is checked and it'll pop up a notice at you whenever you FSS one.

These guys are all I've been finding for most of this week. I mean, they're nice and all, but... :p

The way mine is set up, it gives me a voice warning while I'm scanning that tells me that planet is worth mapping. Then after I've found all the planets I'll alt-tab out and check the list and go map them.

I also get voice alerts on landable planets. It's a really cool app.

I gotta admit: I'm really liking exploring now that I'm starting to learn how much I was missing. I also like doing it in the Phantom much more than the Anaconda now that it has the jump range.

In other news, this is the closest thing to roses I've seen yet:

The app @Codger told me to use tells you exactly what they're worth:

Awesomeness. Glad you got it all set up.

It's always good to find something you enjoy in this game :) Everything gets old eventually so having more than one thing you enjoy is great.

The latest "What am I up to".
I've decided to go from Elite III to Elite V in trading buy using the Fleet Carrier for trade or supporting laser and core mining activity. Progress on this has already raised the credits I need to buy the remaining services I want on the carrier and pay for as much tritium as I'm likely to use for a few months while maintaining a mythical rainy day saving pot for fleet carrier maintenance and impulse ship purchases.
Earlier this week I discovered a relatively well know Platinum triple overlapping hotspot. Anyone who thinks overlapping platinum hotspots are no better than the centre of a single hotspot needs to come out here and have their mind changed. I've started ignoring any asteroid with less than 25% platinum content as I am often finding an even spread of asteroids in the 35% to 66.67% range and not many with no platinum. Shooting fish in a barrel. I'm using my Python as I can fill 192t inside 40 minutes which is the most I can do in a lunch break. 10 collector limpets, 4 medium mining lasers and a grade 5 weapon focus with superconduits power distributor.
The catch is Parrot's Head Sector EL-Y d83 planet 1 is about 1000ly or two carrier jumps from the bubble. It's only worth it if you can sell to a carrier at a fair price.
If anyone wants to give this mining spot a try between now and Monday, let me know and I will leave my fleet carrier The Silver Citadel parked in orbit around planet 1a (moon) over the weekend. Its paying 245K per ton for platinum with 6270 demand. Services are just repair, refuel and restock (so you can buy limpets here). No shipyard or outfitting changes are possible.
Also paying 725K per to for Rhodplumsite. Nothing special about core mining here, but if you give it a try avoid the Rhodplumsite hotspot nearest the triple platinum hotspot as its dead.

You cannot tell this is a triple very easily from this picture, but the selected hotspot is actually two almost on top of each other with the third one below.

I went for a timed speed run in this triple platinum hotspot using the Python. From entry to the ring to 192t cargo bay and 5t in the refinery full took 24 minutes. It would normally take me 40 to 45 minutes to fill this.

In my single hot spot in Salikians, I've got it down to a science. I can fill up my 512 tons in the Cutter in an hour and 20 minutes on average. My record is 55 minutes.

I have a couple of laser mining questions for all you miners who know A LOT more about it than I do.

Is the Pulse Wave Scanner useful for laser mining? I'm not sure...I specifically didn't use it on my last outing, which ended earlier today.

Does using the Prospector Limpet allow more raw ore to be removed from a particular asteroid than not using it? This seems to be a yes, but I haven't done a detailed study...

My most recent method has been using a long range Mining Laser (Pre-Engineered CG Reward) to identify potential rocks for extraction. If after a few seconds I get a visible fragment (not filtered) containing (in my current icy ring location) Tritium and/or LTDs, then I may send in a Prospector. When I do, the rock seems to be mine-able for a much longer period of time than if I don't, and I also get a verbal announcement that the rock is depleted, versus text only when not using one.

Yes, I'm aware that laser mining for platinum is the current best target. I'm more interested in refining/optimizing my general technique between now and when I find my first pristine metallic ring.

On my last outing (across 3 sessions), with 160 tons of cargo space, filled with limpets, my net take was 69 tons of Tritium and 37 tons of LTDs. I have done much better than that in the past (several months ago) and I assume that different rings having different concentrations is the main culprit there. But that assumption may be incorrect...

Salikians was my mining choice as well for Platinum back quite a while ago, good hotspot there. I have the same 4 lasers * 192 cargo Python for that, and same xp with 60+ percent platinum etc. Never counted time but i did had a feeling of what-i've-just-came-full already. Can't say about overlapping hotspots, but for sure hotspots are different. I've tried later with much more modest results elsewhere. My theory for now is that you want to find a good hotspot, overlapping or not doesn't matter.

I carry pulse wave on my laser mining Python just for clicking occasionally to see if any subsurface deposit is nearby. They're sometimes quite rich. Doesn't hurt as miner doesn't need utilities anyway. Does hurt when you find a core tho, can't fit Python for both lazer and core, no hardpoints. (

Make sure prospector is A rated, its class matters for the amount of ore. I have 2*CG mining lasers fitted as well, remember it was terribly annoying not to notice that your lower range lasers ain't really hitting as you're too far from the roid. Using em to test is sounding slow tho, i just fire prospectors. Another theory (or it might be just a superstition) is thosee smaller round shaped roids are reacher in platinum, so i tend to prospect them.

I did go out in my Python this week with 3 mining lasers, abrasion blaster and charge launcher. It's not a bad set up, but does feel sub optimal. I find the Python just a touch too long, slow and cumbersome for core mining - even with engineered thrusters. There is just something that feels right about the Krait II for core mining, even though looking down on the asteroid field looking for cores seems to work best for this ship.
