Winter DLC Speculation

The twilight pack is only mammals, even the exhibit species this time.

So why can't they make a bird only pack?
True that, but I'm not being sarcastic or anything, but how popular do you think an aviary pack will be with only walkthrough exhibit animals?

That's gonna be tedious, so I'm thought of the following:

Habitat - (H)
Exhibit - (E)
Walkthrough exhibit - (WE)

I hope so much, if there is a Birds DLC that will be able to have freedom about the size of the aviaries, and be able to decorate it like we want, just not in a box like the bats !

I have a little side project that's basically my own design document for if I were a Planet Zoo designer. I was imagining the first expansion as a Children's Play Zoo theme with heavy emphasis on education and play as learning, and some of the features I had in mind (educator talks with exhibit animals) are coming in 1.11. It seems the Planet Zoo devs are at least partially following the same line of thought that I have been. Given that, I'm going to rattle off some of the other features included in my personal dream design roadmap. Note that this design was for an expansion to rival the size of the base game, not a DLC sized pack - these features are more of a potential jumping off point for discussion of where we could go than an expectation of anything that might end up in the very next DLC

  • Small habitat animals outside of their enclosures being used in education talks
  • Playground equipment guests actually play on
  • Waterfowl ponds and further gardening and landscaping options, with an emphasis on supporting native wildlife, especially pollinators
  • Restructure of the exhibit system, including eventual plans for a walkthrough butterfly house
  • Petting zoo and feeding mechanics supported by a selection of domestic, semi-domestic, and relatively tame wild species
  • A selection of new native and exotic animals suitable for animal ambassador work and education talks outside of enclosures, including a selection of flighted birds.
  • More interactive education displays and specialized themed viewing windows (Columbus Zoo in Ohio has a plane crash window into their lion exhibit that serves as inspiration and example. I could see such things going in the direction of a large hollow log with a glass barrier acting as exhibit wall, a shipwreck, etc)

Given the new exhibit announced for the bats, I am definitely expecting further refinement of the exhibit system in the future as well as well as more flying creatures to make use of it.

Hmm, I've been thinking, but it all depends on how WE work, but what do y'all think of mini species, like tamarins, using the new WE?

And another question: MUST they be walkthrough?

The flying mechanic has just been added...

Yes, but I assume the bats will have looped animations in the exhibits. I think that's different than having birds free flying in a habitat/aviary?

Hmmm, it would feel...too specific, if that makes sense. Personally, I hope it's not an aviary pack. While I do want flying birds in the game eventually, I don't believe a full pack dedicated to them is needed. I'm a minority here, but hey, it is what it is. 🤷‍♀️

I don't know if it's the next DLC, but an upcoming DLC seems obviously set up to be an Islands expansion. Looking at what's been skipped over on the Meta Wishlist, if they were doing a nocturnal pack trying to hit the nocturnal species, the Tasmanian Devil at number 1 (first on the list!) fossa at number 12 and the kiwi at number 19 would have taken precedent over the raccoon, fox, or skunk.

However, those have been intentionally left out because they represent Tasmania, Madagascar, and New Zealand, three popular/famous islands.

An aviary pack can be really diverse once you put your mind to it

Habitat (birds of prey with looped predetermined nests and flight animations)
  • Bald eagle
  • Andean condor
  • Stellars sea eagle
  • Harpy Eagle
  • Snowy Owl

Habitat (walkthrough)
  • Assorted ducks
  • Carribbean flamingo
  • Roseate spoonbill
  • Scarlet ibis
  • Pelicans
  • Any Asia waders like more cranes?
Large habitat birds
  • Emu
  • Capercaillie
  • More penguins like rockhopper or Humboldt

Exhibit
  • Any small birds that might bite?

Walkthrough exhibit
  • South American and African colorful birds . These should be your typical walkthrough aviary birds

I'm hoping for an expansion pack, with 12 birds and 3 species of butterflies/moths as the exhibit. I feel like 12 birds would be a great staring number and more than one species of butterfly would definitely be needed. (Imagine having butterflies houses in Planet Zoo!) However, I would expect an animals pack size roster.

Also, side note I think there is a huge possibility that birds could not be added in the next pack. A regular cold climate pack is definitely a possibility. Unless someone goes snopping and finds a "lead" (I don't condone data-mining, but it happens), I honestly don't have any solid guesses. Frontier is to unpredictable.

I see butterfly walkthroughs more often than I see hummingbirds in captivity. Hummingbirds are common enough as wild visitors around zoo grounds, but dedicated captive hummingbird aviaries occur in only a few instances, at least in the US. There is what appears to be a sugar water feeder in the background of the screenshot of the new bat exhibit though, so potentially more animals that would make use of it in the future.
