    Ok, just running through a theoretical setup of my Sidewinder. For the Viking Raiding Party, do I have to mount actual shields, or will HRPs also be acceptable as physical shields? Bonus question: does anyone know of a way to get that into the ship name/ID?

    Holy... errr.... whoever. If I can manage to gather my chin off the floor in time, I'll intend to try to race. You didn't, by any chance, happen to watch (and read) "American Gods"? Oh, and BTW - is it required or beneficial to make the blot with (one of) the ships I use for the actual race? I.e., will the benediction apply to the ship or to the pilot? vr munu sker yarr!

    This is currently pretty close to mine (actual jumprange unladen and fully fueled is 39.something). Replace the cargo rack with a passenger module of your choice and just go. I know that the loadout isn't optimal, and if I did it now, I'd do it differently, but so far it works very well. Downside of mixing exploration and passenger missions is that those cabins are heavy, so you'll take a hit in the jump range.

    Nice. The trouble is, a properly outfitted (and Engineered) Sidey takes some time, patience, access to engineers and not just a little money.

    Like others said - if these were mission related NPCs, their ships and rank will be determined by the mission level. Next time that happens, take a look at their ship type and rank. With the right ship and loadout, I can let you shoot your two puny lasers all day long while I sit there and sip coffee. Or, on the other hand, obliterate your Viper with a couple of blasts. Showing NPC pirates their place? Good luck with that, there's always more where they came from. Although, getting a certain combat rank used to help. In one of the earlier versions (and before I reset my CMDR), I had NPC FdL's in a RES who apologized after scanning me. Not sure if that still happens, though. Making a living from mining is hard, though. The missions, as you found out, will also have pirates going after you. Working freelance only becomes remotely competitive if you can set up at the very least a Type-6. For any smaller ships, doing missions (especially passenger missions) or exploration will make more money....

    Sorry, I just have to vent. I mean, here I am, in the middle of basically nowhere. 20 kly's from basically anywhere. Not on the absolute edge. Neither on the top nor on the bottom of the disk. I mean, this area is simply boring. Ok, all of the features (like those slightly dusty stars) that are visible on the Galmap have been tagged, but even most of the Neutron stars I come across are still virgin. And then this: An unremarkable star in the middle of nowhere. With an ELW. Which has already been tagged. I feel like Robinson Crusoe finding that footprint on his island. I want a new Galaxy.

    Wait for the Black Friday or Christmas sale, get yourself a second CMDR, park your exploration ship on a planet with a nice view of a ringed gas giant (or ELW, if you can find one), then spend a couple of months in the insanity that is the Bubble. After that, you'll gladly return to the quiet solitude of the outer rim.

    Let me add my voice for the Dolphin. Currently somewhere on the western rim, maybe about the latitude of Colonia/Sgr A*. Never had an Anaconda, though - but briefly enjoyed a Python and hated how sluggish it felt compared to the smaller ships. With all the trimmings, including a mining laser and a mine launcher, my Dolphin can do just short of 40 ly per jump, has a nice cockpit view (especially in VR if I lean back in my office chair), can scoop up to the dropout boundary and lands on a tea towel. If you want more jump range, by all means, get an AspX. I wouldn't recommend a DBX, though. The AspX can fit a size 6 scoop for a size 5 FSD (perfect), the Dolphin a size 4 scoop for a size 4 FSD (workable), but the DBX will only fit a size 4 scoop for a size 5 FSD. Not good, at least not until we get a slider for jump range efficiency instead of the switch fast/economy.

    The last time I was there, Colonia was a little border colony with just one bar. Apparently, things have changed in the meantime. But if you want to go there, you may want to contact the CCN beforehand. They also run a militia wing who will gladly offer you escort services, should you feel the need. As for my current strategy: I started off, wanting to visit the Zurara. That was half a year ago. After seeing the Zurara, my ship was still in top shape, much better than expected, so I followed the path to the western rim. Then I started to make my way upwards. Then I got a second account and spent some time in the Bubble. Now I'm back on the western rim, still making my way up, with the intention of going to see Beagle Point. After that - who knows. The area here is pretty devoid of shinies, and you may be sure that every star that even remotely stands out in the Galmap has already been tagged. But setting the route filter to F,G,A,B... (in that order, until it can find a route) greatly improves the...

    Problem here is - the AspX is bad at dogfighting. Really bad. She turns too slow to compete with the real fighters, but is too small to carry armament, armour or a SLF to play with the big boys. You can somewhat force her into a combat role, but that means to cut back on everything else. So, please priorize your requests. If you want a combat freighter, look at the Keelback and equip a fighter bay (although that means you'd have to cut back on scanners or SRV or scoop).

    1. The starter area won't give you any different missions - it's all RNG. You'll have to look around a bit. For the start, I'd suggest you find a system (use the Galmap for this) that - has high security - has a large population - has one or several ringed planets, preferrably also with an orbiting station and make this your temporary home. If you take missions, whenever you do a mission, make sure to return to this system. This way, you will increase your reputation (REP) with the factions in this system, getting you access to better (paid) missions. The current moneyspinners are (have been until last week, havent checked in the meantime) tourist missions. At your budget, a Dolphin is ideal for that - although you can also put some passenger cabins in your freighter. 2. Look for Lave or Leesti on the map (IIRC). 3. Occasionally. The controller has only what, 10..20 buttons? ED has somewhat more mappable functions than that....

    Need a bit more information than that... 1) was the interdictor a player or an NPC, i.e. hollow or filled icon on the radar? 2) check (don't assume - check!) on your right hand HUD, inventory screen, if you have anything in your cargo hold. Mission reward comodities tend to accumulate there - that cost me the rebuy on a perfectly fine mining T-7 once.... NPCs usually ask for "goods worth xx Cr", never for money directly, which makes this a bit confusing. If you don't have any goods in your inventory and it was an NPC, report it as a bug. If it was a player, ask them how you're supposed to hand the money over since you aren't carrying any cargo.

    Ok, I'm not saying the Sidey is the best PvP ship out there, but I still think it depends more on the pilot than the ship, or rather, how well the specific pilot can handle the specific ship. And, of course, on your definition of "best". For me, at the moment, my best PvP ship is my iCourier, because a) it's the only halfway decent PvP ship I currently have and b) I can outrun everything I've encountered so far, including packhounds That doesn't mean I can win PvP fights (I can't), but if someone tries to force PvP on me (ok, open and all that - let's not go there), all they're going to see are my pretty red shining thrusters.

    In the meantime @Frenotx: and First video in GluttonyFang's thread should give you a first impression. @sinkarma: If you've used editors before, it should be easy to get into. I've never (well, apart from that Apple stuff lots of years ago) used any and could at least do what I wanted.

    Take the rift remote, switch to the main menu and use the re-center viewpoint for this app (or something like that) menu item. There's also supposed to be a function key mapped to that, but that never worked for me.

    Map one key to external camera toggle, then set up controls for the external cam. Unfortunately, I haven't yet found out how to "park" the external cam at a specific location relative to your ship so you can return to that setup directly, so you'll have to make do with the predefined default views and move the camera from there. Regarding the external camera controls - a lot of people (on PC) plug in an XBox controller (or similar gamepad) just for that.

    Hard to tell without any further information (e.g. the name/location of that moon, type of your ship, size and rating of thrusters), but yes, if that world had any appreciable gravity, this might easily happen. Not all of your ship's thrusters are equal in strength. The belly and main thrusters are guaranteed to get you off the ground in any gravity, but that's about it. All the other four may not be able to lift you off the ground, and none except main or belly may be able to stop you plunging down. Setting your throttle to 0 in FA-on mode just tells your ship's computer that you want to stop moving. If you have your nose down on a high g world, this will be difficult. If you're already moving downward, it may be impossible.
