I think its about 1 or 2 km from the exact coordinates we used on the expedition. Check the crater behind the large mound.

Thanks Robert. What you've cited doesn't prove game exit has priority, I'm afraid. I'm only seeing your opinion, which is fine. I don't understand what you mean by saying Both multi-player modes offer the possibility of PvP, not just Open. This alone does not imply that PvP is prioritised. It's the negative aspect, does not, that is throwing me. A difference between PG PvP groups and Open is the lack of control and certainty in open - the thrill, as I see it personally. I'd like to see this maintained and enhanced, especially by addressing the Clogging and exit countdown aspects. A reset timer does take control away from wanting to leave if things get too spicy (or the postman arrives) but that would be the choice of being in open.

Can I ask how you've determined that FD have prioritized leaving the game? Maybe a link I've missed or forgotten? It still begs the question of why have a timer at all. I'm not asserting a prioritization of PvP, don't know what gives you this idea, to be honest. I've consistently mentioned other modes and the fact they exist seems to point that open is the mode where PvP would have a priority, seeing as open is where it's been designed to happen. As it stands at the moment, Clogging is happening with seemingly little consequences for offenders and the graceful exit is too wishy washy to be effective for either party in an encounter. I'm happy that opinions vary. I'm also happy that they can change. :)

A player chooses mode and, regardless, high waking is the best contextual evasion in a player interaction. An instance popping graceful exit has zero depth in game terms. I disagree about the priority of a player wishing to leave the game. Why have a timer if a priority is there? As a said, the 15 sec timer is a half measure. There is nothing scared about it's length nor substance, nor indeed about having it at all. It's here as a stop gap, to my mind, perhaps as FD decide on a more determined course of action.

I know the exit menu isn't cheating as currently determined by FD. However, I hope the dynamics of this timer are changed, especially in open mode. This would be part of a comprehensive addressing of the problem of combat logging in the game, either actual or perceived by other players. The current 15 second exit is worse than a half measure for all parties. I have the feeling is was introduced as a half measure (or placeholder) until such time as the game had developed or been developed. I hope we are at that point now. FD determine what duration a so called graceful exit is but this is also connected to the ungraceful exit. If a reset timer existed in open, there would be less ambiguity about cheating by disappearing from another players instance during combat. I feel this needs to be aired at the same time as discussing Clogging consequences and punishments. The less margin for error, or ambiguity, in this matter, the better.

I don't understand your point, Robert. I did say logging, not menu exiting. I was talking about extending or resetting the exit timer in open player combat. I don't have an issue with the option to have an exit; we are debating the perimeters of it, are we not? We seek to expel cheating from the game, do we not?

Does this 'Sidewinder Clown' know that your real life doorbell is ringing? I feel you do need to be locked into combat, especially against another player. There are already legitimate ingame mechanics for evading combat with waking. The convenient inconvenience of real life is likely to be used as a cheaters justification to avoid combat in open mode. If you're expecting a flurry of telephone calls or storm of parcel deliveries, or whatever, it might be a better idea to play in a non open mode. You said there is no ingame reason for killing another Cmdr but there is - it's just that you don't give credence to these reasons. In fact, you cite stroking of the e-peen despite the fact that all players are essentially fantasizing at being space Cmdrs in the game, regardless of their preferred play style/profession. Open is meant to have spontaneous PvP occur as part of it's existence; there are other modes available to avoid this if you wish. Cheating shouldn't be allowed for any reason, including logging in...

I'm working on Lords of Midnight next. That's due to be completed (from my perspective) in about October. After that I'm going to do a short-ish young adult SF novel called "Sam and the spaceship in the attic". After that I will commit to finishing books 3 and 4 of the Shadeward Saga. Effectively I'll start writing book 3 in early 2018 and then continue straight on to book 4. Guessitimate on availability for Book 3 will be late 2018 (probably launched at that years' FantastiCon) and perhaps Spring/Summer 2019 for book 4. :) I really want to get back to the Shadeward stuff as soon as I can. After those we'll see. There's always a possibility of Shadeward prequels, or something entirely different. Definitely can't link Shadeward and ED. Other than the IP problem (basically I wouldn't be allowed), I wouldn't want to because they aren't the same universe. Shadeward is set only a few centuries ahead of 'now' (exact date not fixed - probably 24rd or 25th century on Earth) and Shadeward is a 'hard SF'...

NDA does prevent me from this right now, and there are links to other stuff (FDev mysteries and other things that have been in the game since the beginning which have yet to be found - see MB's Fiction Diaries on youtube and DB's comments for details) which could be compromised as a result. As for the tinfoiling, some of the ideas were far better than the ones I came up with. :) Cheers, Drew.

A quick update regarding the book and the "Engineers' Exploit". This only came to my attention last week and it is far too late for the book to be altered in response. However, whilst I had not anticipated that particular problem, I was well aware of the modus operandi and predilections of the individuals and groups involved and had already dealt with them sensitively in the book. SDC are referred to anonymously, and their 'play style' clearly indicated by other characters in the story who clearly know about them, thus they get no glory in the book for any specific undertakings. Besieger (as per the Galnet article) does kill Salomé (it happened, so it happened) but, naturally, there is a twist and the universe has its own karma. ;) Cheers, Drew.

SDC are referred to anonymously and their modus operandi clearly indicated. Salome's killer is referred to as Beseiger (already happened in Galnet), but it is not a big part and he does get an appropriate comeuppance at the hands of a minor faction... ;-) It was too late to change anything after the engineers exploit notification, but I'd already taken appropriate steps in advance of this. Cheers, Drew.

I had already dealt with the problem sensitively prior to the engineers exploit becoming known, fully cognizant of their reputation. They will get no glory in the book. :) And to answer the point about 'I only did this to sell books' - firstly I stressed multiple times that you didn't need to buy the book to take part, and from a purely financial perspective I have *lost* money writing both books. ED is a niche game and thus these books are niche^2. They sell to a few hardcore fans and that's it. Take out tax, commission, license etc and there isn't much left. Exposure perhaps. ;) I make far more actual money from my Shadeward Saga series than ED. If you count going to conventions (travel, hotels etc) and time spent maintaining my lore pages which could have been better used (in a purely financial sense) to my own works the negative balance gets dramatically worse. I did it because (then) I enjoyed it and people were enjoying it. My aim all along has been to entertain and to try to provide some of the...

  1. BUUR! Good to see you. Yeah mate, I'm still around. I just don't get on these forums that often these days. Sorry to hear you're having it rough. Things can only get better I guess. I'll try catching up with you on IRC some time soon.

you will get better and if nothing else you will be better then the new guys when ED is released, although having said all that, the Imperial paranoid in me questions whether you are telling the truth and perhaps your Commander snuffler!...what is your cmdr name in game?
  8. LOL Perseus. It's not sensitive Federal info. Although I did join the alpha I really suck as a pilot and am finding it hard to control my ship with any amount of skill. I only play about 30 mins per day (if that) and usually in Impeccable Defence. I don't attack human players if I can help it. You're safe with me.

Hi Penthux, are you in the Alpha?
I hope this isn't sensitive Federal info - I'd just be happy knowing you were participating.
    I won't shoot you except:
    1) You attack me.
    2) You have a bounty
