I think you're making the point the OP was making. It's not about giving the engineers out for free, but rather that some of the engineers that have both explorer/trading and combat upgrades could have an alternative somehow, either making friends with providing something else than combat bounties, or perhaps have another (more explorer focused) engineer providing the same upgrades, or in worst case, add another engineer that has a different friend requirement with the explorer/trading upgrades. So it's not about making it for free, but rather allowing someone with a more focused career decision to stay in that career and still have access to upgrades relating to that career. That's also freedom to be allowed to stay in one career and still have access to the same resources. Put it this way, why not add an engineer that provides the Thargoid specialized weapons, but the requirement is to go around the galaxy two times, and land on at least 5000 planets? Basically, having an enormous explorer based...

Thank you. With that said, I have a strong feeling things will change in 2.4 and beyond. Fdev has promised to improve and expand all things in the core system, so it's quite possible there will good things coming out in the future, even when it comes to engineers.

Well, AFM isn't a shield but a repair unit (Auto Field Maintenance), and some explorers want (need) it to be extra shielded (meaning it can take a beating), because landing on heavy G planets (you easily smack down harder than you want to) and other dangers than just combat exist out there (binary stars and such). And since it's a "Field Maintenance" unit, and not a "Combat" unit, the upgrade is a bit misfitted to the engineer and requirement.

Not quite perfectly so. Lori Jameson, shielded AFM (could be an interesting upgrade for explorers as well), has G4. Only she has it. You have to be Combat:Dangerous to be invited. I'm at Expert, so I have some heavy grinding to do for weeks before I can get it, so I won't even bother. But I don't see why you have to be a highly ranked combat expert to get some of her upgrades. It's more like, I want a better oven, but I can only get it if I become a sniper for the army.

I'm sure he could, but his point was rather that according to the advertising, you can pick a career, but the way it's configured, you have to choose all careers and at some point participate in each and every one, even if you decide you want just one of them. It's not hard to do any one of them (however, some might require more work than others), but the question was rather how someone with a specific (single) career can get access to engineers that can benefit their career without having to change career Imagine, in real life, a car mechanic will only do oil change to your car if you change your job for a month. You're currently an accountant, but he want's you to become a professional football player and win 10 matches, before you can get an oil change. That's a weird requirement in life, but... after all, that's how this game is designed. It doesn't really bother me. When the time comes, I'll change my career to unlock the other engineers, but still, the criticism the OP made is a fair one.

I think it's rather difficult to accidentally kill another player. After all, you have to take down their shield, and hull, and do the kill shot before you killed them. In a bigger battle in some zone, most players will (hopefully) turn off their report crime flag, so it won't be a big issue there.

In the words of an old Ford commercial, you can pick any color as long as its black. You can pick any career in Elite as long as you also do the other careers at some point. I'm bad in combat, but I'll be forced at some point to work on my Combat rank if I want access to some of the upgrades that I can't do now. I guess it can't be avoided. the game is combat focused after all, and trading/exploring is more of an afterthought it feels like. You have to become an expert fighter pilot in this game. That's what it's all about in the end, but that's just what the game is.

Those who haven't been part of the old discussion (newcomers like me), don't know about the dead horse. Instead, link to the old thread so people who hasn't played the game since 1984 can read. Also, I think it's a bit unfair for newcomers to be forced to read 1 billion posts to see if their thoughts, concerns, or questions have been discussed to death by the veterans.

You got a point. You can't choose a career and stick to it in Elite. You have to go for combat, pirate, trading, exploring, ... careers all at once to get the engineers. There should be multiple ways (depending on your picked career) to become a friend to an engineer. For instance, I'm not interested in becoming Elite in combat only for the purpose of activating an engineer. It's not the path I've taken. I might on the other account I just got the other day, but not in my main account.

Perhaps "report crimes against me" should by default also report crimes that I make myself, in essence background turning on reporting for anyone I shoot at. Or maybe certain areas (PvP Combat zones) should by default be no reporting for anyone?

The problem is that some griefers kill other players without any serious punishment. They kill, amount some bounties on their heads, go to the station and pick up their sidey, go out, get killed, and their bounty is gone. In exchange, they get a free sidewinder. No cost on them. But the cost for the traders/explorers is usually huge. So it's unbalanced. This new method will discourage griefing. However, if you want to go into a PvP battle, you can always turn off the "report crime" during the play, but of course, there are some problems with that too.

Thanks to all of you. I'm happy to finally see hull repair added. Very cool. And the added penalty on rebuy if you kill another player is also really nice.

I'm quite new to Elite and the lore/books. When the Salomé event happened, I had no clue what it was or even understood it was a community event of sorts, not until after. So I hope there will be more integrated events and stories in the future that I might be able to participate in.

I've seen several posts about this and C&P (I assume is crime/punishment) and some other things, but I can't find the 2.3.10 patch notes or any other information to confirm this. Was this on the live stream only recently (haven't watched it yet), or is the source something else? Same. Did the other day. Right now, I'm working on getting access to Ram Tah to lighten up my heat sinks. I'm trying to push my Anaconda to 60.

The link to the Patch 2.3.10 doesn't work for me. It takes me to the Patch forum, but the most recent on there is 2.3.02 only. No 2.3.10 visible for me. How come? Was it removed? Or something going on with the forum?

I'd like to see more of those missions. The only one I've seen so far is the ruin mission with Ram Tah. There should basically be a exploration mission type blended into the mission list or a new screen like the passenger mission screen.

xD That's hilarious! Love it. And by FDev doing this, they made a point about that they don't like cheaters, so going forward, beware using any. Who knows what they would do if they decide to penalize.

Not always though. Many games have different difficult settings, of which the highest is very deadly. Like legendary in Halo, or survival in NMS. I've started to see Solo as easy mode and Open as dangerous mode, where griefers are part of making the game really difficult. It is what it is, nothing more or less, and I choose to play which mode that suits me.
