That last pic is of Mercury, right? That's a false color image; Mercury is actually gray. The other images look like "color enhanced" photos. That's very common for astronomical photos. Image processing is applied, to bring out subtle color differences. Basically, I don't want boring planets and moons in ED, which is a game, not a scientific documentary. Also note that many scientific documentaries actually use color enhanced images. Umm, I said the "majority", not "all". Look at all the beige and gray moons in this composite image: Here's the source:

The thing is, I'm not sure I want the planets and moons to be 100% scientifically accurate, if that means everything looks boring. This is a game after all. Take a look at the planets or moons in our solar system. The majority seem to be gray or beige. Personally, I'd rather see a bit more variety and drama in the coloration, even if it means the game is not quite "realistic".

True, you'd get the credits, but you would miss out on "the satisfaction of completing the mission". It's not always (just) about the credits, imo.

Great summary! Rep++ Good point! What would happen if you scanned the monoliths with some Thargoid technology in your SRV? There's lots of possibilities with the Alien Ruins assets. Why waste them on a limited-time mission? First, let me thank you for your efforts, masCh; I truly appreciate your hard work and dedication! Rep++

    I didn't have a problem last night. I haven't played today (yet).

It's been quite a while since I've mined asteroids, but there were times when I landed in exactly the same environment, time after time. I'd see the same boulders, which would have exactly the same minerals. It seemed to be based in part, on time of day, but I was able to repeat my steps and get the same payouts for a dozen or so visits. I'm not sure if this is still the case, but it's possible.

Can't say I care about the language (although I respect that some people do), but I'm struggling to find it particularly funny either way.

You know, different colours for shield strikes would make a decent cosmetic :D

IHammers are one of the hottest weapons there is. It's a lot for a poor little Viper to handle.

This is why I take pips out of weapons and dump the weapons capacitor before running base scans. It persists through loading the SRV back into your ship, so you only need to do it once. It would be nice if disabling the guns in the modules screen didn't also disable the data link scanner.

If you like to drive an SRV, it's probably still worth doing once. It does get to be a bit grindy, like so much of this game. The silver lining is that if you stop having fun, you can call it quits and cash in. There no huge bonus to entice you to continue, if you aren't having fun anymore. Here's a tip: Try to explore the ruins in daylight; they are much harder to navigate at night.

The extra 100 mcr was a bonus, clearly stated in the mission text, that you got for finding all 101 scans at 1 mcr each. The scans pay the same, but the bonus has dropped to 10 mcr. I see your point. However, what has happened is that there is a significant imbalance in payouts, which encourages players to repetitively grind for whatever pays the best. If all activities (done with skill) paid approximately the same, players would probably do a larger variety of tasks. To me, it seems that this game is mostly to blame, due to this imbalance. Exploitive, yes. An exploit, no, since this was how the mission was designed. The message you got for completion actually encouraged you to come back. If you did come back, you were given the same mission again.

Exactly, because money is so easy to earn these days, a 111 mcr mission that takes a few days to a week to complete "isn't worth it" to a lot of players. That's really sad and says a lot about the state of the game.

The crazy thing about the gold rush (in this case, the Alien Ruins) is that I'm not doing it for the cash, per se. I'm doing it because it's the fastest way I've found to increase my trader rank. I'm nearly at double elite; this mission should do the trick. I guess that sounds a lot like those who are trying to get rich quick, but I really don't need the money. I'll have over 1 bcr after this trip. I fly an AspX, so the rebuys are low and I haven't actually faced a rebuy since my intentional suicide at the end of the Distant Stars Expedition, which was back in January.

True. It took me months to get to where I didn't need to refer to my "cheat sheet" on the control layout, at least occasionally. I'm sure you'll get used to the new configuration in time; it's amazing how your body can adapt.

I'm doing the Alien Ruins mission. Apparently, I'm one of the last ones to get the full 100 mcr bonus, which was nerfed yesterday, down to 10 mcr.

Unfortunately, you've ruled out my first choice, an AspX. My next pick would be the DBX. The Anaconda is a popular choice for exploring, but personally, I hate it. The Orca would be an interesting choice as well; I really like its cockpit interior, but I've not flown it much. I'd pick it over the Anaconda, though. These days, you have a number of good choices, if you're willing to do some engineering. My Asp can get up to 56 lyrs per jump, if I really strip it down to the bare essentials. Partly it depends on your exploration style. I like to get to the destination as quickly as possible, then explore. I especially like a quick return, when I get tired of exploration. I find that's the hardest part of the trip for me. The other great thing about a large jump range is that you use less fuel for smaller jumps and that you can reach areas where the stars are sparse that you can't otherwise reach.

I have the same sort of precautions in place. My Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick has 12 buttons, which is not nearly enough for ED, so I use the Shift and Ctrl keys (on the footpad) so that I have an expanded set of combination commands. I've set it up so that the button alone is the primary, the shifted button is the auxiliary command, and the ctrl button is the uncommon command. For example, one button is Stop (throttle at 0%), shifted is landing gear, and ctrl is heat sink. Another is UI focus, galactic map, and system map. Another is boost, target next system, and chaff. Eject all cargo is especially hard: shift+ctrl+button, with no action assigned to ctrl+button, shifted is toggle cargo hatch. It all makes logical sense, but at this point, with all of these learned responses, I'd have a really hard time switching to another controller setup. (That's the downside.)
