This ----> For me, I do most of my bounty hunting less for massive money, more for fun in Imperial Eagle. Can take out Clippers, though probably need an RTB for repairs and reload after one of those. I tend to patrol in supercruise dropping in on any and all USS or distress calls with a threat level over 1 while scanning ships passing through and interdicting the wanted ones. RES is a bit too much like farming for me though I do enjoy Combat Zones in the same ship (hair raising but low rebuy if the worst does happen). It's not max profitable maybe but worth trying out imo, as getting into station with only seconds of life support remaining is a hoot and assist vouchers on a few Corvettes, even better. Purely incidental but my iEagle has no jump range, whatsoever. Good luck!

They have provided this answer about 10 times now in various places. Stop this nonsense. It's broken, yes, they know reason, yes, it is hard to fix and most likely will be part of bigger refactoring they plan to do anyway.

All right notes Synthetic Frost, except PS4 uses their own shader language and 3D geometry API, PS3 was heavily built around OpenGL, but it wasn't pure thing. Still PS4 graphics flow is very similar to how OpenGL works as far as I have heard. FD most likely will consider Metal 2 port. Really depends on how much work it requires though. I still don't think graphics API is an issue for FD. For what I felt of FD communication they are just afraid of costs and Linux playerbase while dedicated isn't that big.

Please name when FD has been lacking honesty. Lack of communication or not saying same things over and over again isn't really honesty. Can you provide details? Also provide your own ideas with potential time tables how long it would take to fix it. I really don't buy it, but I will guess if you just honk then you will notice that minutae details as planet surface colours.

I created single post of installation instructions which I intend to update as regularly as possible https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/366894-How-to-install-ED-on-Linux-using-Wine-EXPERIMENTAL-NOT-OFFICIALLY-SUPPORTED Any comments about improvements, tweaks, changes - let me know.

Because it is completely different material system. Yes, it is more accurate. However, they did miss some potential pitfalls for code approach they went for. That's happens when you just don't have a code 'make this planet pretty'. Would be nice not to speak in name of others. Thanks. Sans planet colouring, and ring panic aside it has never looked better. Emmmm....do you even understand how ED works? Instances are for networking, that's first. Second, you obviously don't have understanding what actually costs performance in games. Also "with not that much going on"....really. I won't even bother comment on that.

What bad has happened? I see mostly improvements and new features. Maybe less sparkly than I wanted some to be, but overall it is just getting better.

Disclaimer: this is an guide of installing ED on Linux distribution using Windows library wrapper Wine. This is not official (and not officially supported), and is deemed experimental, so only use your commander account only if you know what you are doing. Also please don't ask FD for help as they won't be really aware about this setup and don't support it. Also ED Horizons using Wine won't work on MacOS due of Apple not supporting OpenGL beyond 4.1 version. I am intended to update this post as new information comes along. State of Success or TLDR: As for 24.07.2017 using Wine 2.12 staging version with 32-bit version of ED launcher is running (with cosmetic but non-blocking issues), ED installation works, launching game works. Shader compiling/preparing happens, but with lot of 'fixme' messages which means that it isn't working at the moment. Main menu is reached consistently but I had no luck to interact with, although it seems game connects to server and enables certain menu items regarding playing...

I can consider that planets not being colourful impacts your gameplay if you can accept that people stop playing just because planets look not that rainbow-ey is a bit nuts. Also yeah, making games is hard. Making games like ED is very very hard. Can we stop at least kick around accusations and doom saying as it would help? Man, there were times when geeks were considered smartest persons in room.

Would like to have that, but it would take long time to convince FD to do Linux version. They can do it, they certainly have expertise, I guess support costs and worth of doing it overall is something they are worried for now.

Well not exactly yet :) But we are making progress. TLDR There are no crashes, but now we have lot of fixmes on shader compilation, and game doesn't fully launch, although one guy claims he got into game without textures :) If you are knowledgable about debugging Wine, please jump in and help with reporting bugs so we can get ED running under Wine. What's working is loading game, main menu and that's it so far. Also we got Wine 64-bit running with launcher so we can play around with ED Horizons (yay). Shader stuff is same for both versions so we can do 32-bit version for now. https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/2920-Elite-Dangerous-for-Linux?p=5761097&viewfull=1#post5761097

I am really surprised this public grind is still going on. It is tiresome. They still going on with "bla bla bla this is going to be so awesome" when it is quite clear that a) no, it won't be b) mechanics aren't there c) there are just premade content BEFORE having mechanics d) it is all just so badly managed that it is DONE. I know what it is. I had phase in my life similar to this one. It is just...so...plain...boring.

That's simple. Use Steam Runtime as basis to work against. Use OpenGL 4.5 or Vulkan API as they both are well supported in all three GPUs - AMD, Nvidia and Intel. Use SDL2 for sound, controls, and file system access. Easy. There are some issues with controllers. Not all of them are fully supported on Linux due of firmwares. But that's something FD can't change really. Linux has been standardized towards gaming for years now. We are in good spot. Just support Steam Runtime and we will take it from there.

Most fixes for issues like these in complex games like these are 95% brainstorming and coming up with idea and 5% of actual implementation. Trust these devs, they know what they're doing. As for performance - people tend to gravitate towards 'screw you got me' attitude. You have no idea on what kind of machines people play ED. It helps a lot. As long as colours are back when gas giants are added I really don't mind less. For people bringing this up again and again as example that FD doesn't care, ED sucks, etc - please, leave. Have fun elsewhere. edit: as for actual fix being hard that it most likely will require to be part of rework coming for next expansion which is at least year away - that's sad, but that's life.

What is this with SC backers always talking down ED?

Not really. Evil is in details. Game's spawning threads mostly is untouched - no one's gonna rewrite it for Linux just to make it single threaded. OpenGL implementations like Mesa mostly are single threaded though an that holds down potential performance. There's ongoing work however for AMDGPU driver to make it multithreaded where game doesn't blow up due of that. ED have multiple threads by default - one for render, another for sound, another for networking etc. Well...yeah. I understand FD but I feel they were just a bit frightened to take on Linux despite being fully capable to do so and without much cost. I understand them though - see how support costs raise due of complexities of Windows setups already. I believe one day FD will add Linux client - just because they have working OpenGL renderer and they are capable to make it working for Linux. But for now if we get Wine working, it will be huge step. I played World Of Warcraft for three years just on Linux.

Sorry that I didn't mention - there is issue with winetricks with Wine 64-bit installing dotnet40 before dotnet45 and thus failing, because dotnet40 fails with 'already having 4.0 profile' or something. What I did I just download .NET 4.5 dist for 64-bit and run as normal executable for wine. It installed without errors and thus I got working wine 64-bit prefix with .NET support. This is very important because without it you won't get Wine 64-bit running for ED. Also remember to do this after installing dotnet support: winetricks corefonts quartz vcrun2012 However I would also will point out that 64-bit version currently fail sooner than 32-bit version of ED (CRC error, judging by wine logs, some missing implementations for 64-bits), and 32-bit gives chance for us to test shaders/textures/all DX11 stuff. It seems at basis - except for compute shaders - way 32-bit and 64-bit does graphics doesn't differ much.

I agree the travel equation is complicated because gravities affect acceleration. Gravity wells (planets) also move in the game, so even the route to the same station changes over time. Essentially it is a good idea to get out of the shipping lane, away from the orbital plane, not only because higher acceleration .. but fewer interdictions too. I probably wouldn't have a home base beyond 1,000Ls from the jump point (because you might fly that route a lot) but I haven't timed the flight either, mostly because I'm not sure flight time always counts as dead-time. Depends what you're hauling of course but I've been flying quite a few illegal passengers lately, so tend to spend the flight getting ready to run the gauntlet of station security, as well as flying what I feel is the optimum route. At the end of the day (if this seems like a game design flaw or something), it aint .. the galaxy is what you'd call BIG .. and any speed you get to above 1 x the speed of light is really a bonus. There has at times...

Yeah. Nice things to have are better got, with a good attitude towards the devs and game than a bad one. True, all NPCs must die .. but Frontier aren't NPCs and there's a lot more in play, real world. My 2c.

One of the problems with micro-adjustments in games is that a set of 'best mods' quickly emerge, at which point everyone does those and the effort and risk of making complex tweaking possible is wasted. This was the case in Hawken, and they reverted it back to a simpler system.

All those things are covered by SDL2, which all prominent porters use to port games on MacOS/Linux.

Major update for Wine - major 64-bit issues around .NET on Wine seems to be resolved. It is hairy and still have small issues, but overall it works. Installed ED: Horizons, now I am getting CRC error. Shader compilation goes trough with lots of fixmes as on 32-bit client.

Sony is on Vulkan steering committee. While I also think for PS4 life cycle they will stick with their own API (too much investment to add Vulkan support, although on limited scale it is still possible), I think future consoles will sport Vulkan support, just because there's momentum behind it.

I unlocked Sirius permits back in 2014 or maybe very early 2015. I wanted to see Sirius Cybernetics and have a quick chuckle. While I was at it I unlocked a few nearby permit-locked systems too, like Van Manen's Star (?). What I do remember was that the Sirius one was laborious... I had to go to a small Anarchy system to trade slaves and run slave missions for them to get the unlock (I forget the name now).

I actually haven't even "heard" of Palin yet via my other Engineers. But if/when I do, it's not gonna be a problem. I'd probably go out on another exploration stint again, since I'm already going to be "heading out there". May as well honk some systems, scan some worlds, and make some cash. What I do remember tho, is that Farseer had a similar requirement... she got unlocked immediately because by the time Engineers arrived, I had already been to Sag A* and back.... twice. Besides, 5,000 LY is just like a quick trip to the corner store. I have seen passenger missions who want to go even further (11K, 30K etc).

  8. It is ages old nick of my name Peter localized version, and with first letter of surname. So pronouncing it would be rather difficult Pecis K maybe?
