That's right. The benefit is reduced consumption and more reliance on (hopefully sustainable) production. In case hadn't noticed, millions were using food banks even five years ago in the UK, the NHS nearing the funding edge, personal debt at record highs 'as members' of the EU. Money fleeing the country untaxed doesn't help that.

    It's also a political situation

Looking forward more maybe to the import duty, tax revenue, on UK's 60bn p.a. trade deficit with the EU (in addition to the 350m/ week)?

Yes. Apart from two things. One, they're not internal and two at what priority level (eg. compared to getting multicrew working or making sure the API dodges exploits if possible) does API porting happen? Am all for the 3rd party sites, they're awesome but do I approve of these tactics? Not sure. A fan site, knowingly setting out to cause damage to the game it's a fan of, is a bit hmmm. Maybe they tried other things but it's the first I'd heard of their disquiet, maybe away from subforum threads if clues exist there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not denigrating the sites - at all. They produce meta data that in ED, where the data is more raw, is less easy to access. But all the data does come from ED in the first place. The concern I'd have is Frontier feeling constrained from changing the API as the game develops, as they see fit and radically if necessary, for fear of upsetting the API developers. That would be a bad result, the meta-tail wagging the game-build dog.

'Kind of' .. I don't use them at all (or a pen and paper) and get on just fine in the game. You've got to enjoy a good revolution now and then though.

More like 'Blackmail' I think .. In blackmail there doesn't need to be a profit motive, damage is enough.

Me neither, but I wasn't actually there for the Jarrow March or the Tolpuddle Martyrs .. Finding it fascinating to think of the Elite Pilots Federation really becoming a thing (in a way) But not something to worry too much about in the round, for reasons.

I just want to know what we should ask for .. If we club together and send EDDB a tenner, presumably I can get the lockdown on my local station removed?

I wouldn't put it like that, because volunteers. More likely, while engrossed in the beta / game build, API porting is bound NOT to be the first thing on the dev's list (and shouldn't be) but when the main build is in big flux, which it was in 2.3, that causes a problem to the 3rd party developers, who really are right to point out that they provide a cracking support system, despite not being core game code. In all these things, you always need things to come to a head so the communication goes on the checklist for next time there's an update, and if nothing else FD now know exactly who to contact .. So the major 3rd party API devs now have a Trade Union Committee .. lets see what happens if they decide they don't want 2.4 to go ahead from beta (for example) because it messes with their 3rd party code !? Tongue in cheek, but the point stands .. prior notice to API devs potentially (could) spell .. spoilers. Expect NDA's?

Have never really used any of the tools. I've had a go at the ship builder one but find much in ED obscure and complex, and the markets are REALLY clunky to use

No. I don't either because I don't understand them, there is much in ED that I find FAR too complex. - - - Updated - - - I often write down trade routes on post it notes. Alternatively there are 'walkthroughs'/guides.

There's a log file where the game writes events as individual json documents, and many of the 3rd party tools use it to give you something like a player journal, albeit out of the game. The thread on the data format is here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/275151-Commanders-log-manual-and-data-sample I use EDDI (https://github.com/cmdrmcdonald/EliteDangerousDataProvider) to get information from the log, and other sources. Well, it's not to protect from Govt per se, but as an insurance policy for 1st amendment, a US citizen tells me. Are you suggesting that The US army would turn against it's own citizens? That's a chilling thought. Anyway, the gun genie is out of the bottle now, so while criminals can get them illegally, US citizens may as well get them legally to protect trespassers and burglars and other crims who have them illegally!

I thought you weren't supposed to look into player data on the backend without a ticket, now... Of course if there was a self-service web app we could use to peruse our own historical data we would all be rushing to offer you our first born :D.

Nah they do, FD are good people all around. The game code has been in a particularly massive state of flux with 2.3 though. A missed communication, maybe. Damage the game for it? Not exactly the action of a staunch supporter.

I just wonder how practical that can ever be, especially around major major code updates (of which 2.3 is DEFINITELY one). No matter how much love FD want to give it, the API is always bound to be in some way secondary to the main code, which generates it. I really do wonder if API development doesn't happen during beta live. Did 2.3 break the API again (it happened around 2.2 iirc)? It's a tough one but I don't think it's because 3rd devs are unappreciated at all. In fact if I was being harsh, I might say 'counting on you'.

As cool as the 3rd person tools are, I can't see the action being very constructive, especially if the OP says the idea of the tools is to support Frontier, as well as the game. Why not just stay in touch with Howard?? The OP mentions going through Zac but, if it's possible to organise a coordinated shutdown, and if people worried he doesn't appear on forums, did anyone actually PM Howard first?? Surely he'd know why the API doesn't beta, though if you ask me it's probably written during beta, once the build has been locked down, because at the end of the day it is a peripheral to the main game build. So anyway, no doubt the thread has a life of it's own by now, but my 2c. ps. sympathetic because obviously the 3rd parties want to give a good service but don't support the action really.

Finally ED is back to pre-2.3 levels of performance... no dropouts from hyperspace, mission boards don't time out, hyperspace jumps are roughly 10 to 13 seconds...and the stars do not look smudgy coming out from hyperspace. I'm happy :)

  8. It is ages old nick of my name Peter localized version, and with first letter of surname. So pronouncing it would be rather difficult Pecis K maybe?
