I believe ED can support up to 16K rendering and that would be "proper" 16K i.e. 4 x 8K 16:9 panels worth of resolution. Provided the field of view thing I mentioned in a previous post isn't an issue then we should be good for some time to come.

I could too. On a nearly related topic .. will insurance be getting more expensive, if Bank of Zaonce suffers massive losses when the Thargoid threat turns out to be real (like I've been telling you all along it is)?

Hi all... I don't know where to put this, so I guess this is as good a place as any. Has anyone ever tried playing ED via Steam's In-Home streaming? Supposedly it's supposed to be the gaming PC that's "playing" it, but you're on a tablet/laptop/some-other-low-end-stuff but you are actually playing it, just not sitting in front of the gaming PC. Why would people do this? Well... maybe the gaming PC is located in the bedroom, and I have a tiny shoebox PC at the living room connected to the TV... so maybe I just wanted to play ED at the living room using the 50 inch TV instead? Anyway, has anyone ever tried it? Does it feel "laggy" to input responses? Will your HOTAS bindings get lost cuz you're actually playing from a couch in the livingroom with nothing much more than a gamepad?

Lately they nail the date and start pretty early - around 9 - 10 am. If beta rollout is any evidence this might be a long wait for servers to come back. I would say 4pm at latest.

It is possible, but heavy roadblocking by both Microsoft and Sony will make this very long wait before that happens. FD uses their own servers, just accounting and integration is unique for each of platforms. Nope. They are same. FD uses their own servers and their own network stack.

It was initially from here as this chap tried the 5K OLED and 8K LCD at IFA a few weeks ago: http://forum.pimaxvr.com/t/full-pimax-8k-and-5k-review/2778 However things may have changed, as I know the specs have been somewhat fluid as they work towards the final kickstarter specs and what they can achieve before delivery, so it may be an option only or dropped now. If you can get a direct response on their forums its best to ask there, as their staff are quite responsive.

Directors cashing in on successful launch of both PC and ED, releasing ordinary shares. What did I miss there? As for David's share falling, we already established he is in formal minority now. Jobs also was. As long there's no some serious fail with deliveries and sales (and if there is FD is in trouble anyway), I just don't see anything changing in leadership. Not every company has US style directional behaviour as EA or other companies. Seems like success to me (or again, what did I miss).

I bought the MP3 version of Reclamation, and it was quite good, since it contained both music as well as soundeffects. Perfect when doing Exploration, Mining or Trade / Cargo hauling CGs. I am waiting for the MP3 version of Premonition.

You literally throw anything to wall to see what sticks. That's how those huge SC pledge goals were created. As for shooting I just had very interesting discussion with friend this evening. We discussed how all games, especially massive online games, despite any good intentions ends up being shooting or hitting other entities with magic spear. Like it or not, that's what hits with most of *active* game playing audience. Of course, there are people who will like other aspects of your game, but most of them will instantly connect with pew pew and everything else will be boring to them. Also this is most easiest way to balance and measure skill or success in game. Anything else is very, very hard to measure as success. Major issue is that these big games, graphically and concept wise, take lot of time and money to develop. Thus those who actually pay will call the shots. Lucky is that developer who finds a way to add more than pew pew in a game and gets away with it. Also biggest paradox and crux is...

I think you're right, but not just about the cloud in use. It's more likely to be about the canonical owner of player accounts, which are Xbox accounts and proprietary Elite Dangerous accounts owned by Frontier on PC. From what I can see, these are only shared on the first discovery field of each system, and I guess that these are just plain old text data without a reference back to the originating player account backend (consider the inability to query your first discovereds). If the gameservers used directly by sessions are indeed required to be on Azure for Xbox, then that's indeed a whole other world of pain to unify. Refactoring the player account model, taking into account different platform backends, their customer account models, and how those handle DLC and Game Extra purchases, would give the backend team no end of fun and games. I do something very similar in my day job.

My guess Steam would increase buyer's satisfaction a lot if they would went away of showing player's reviews as frontal element and just point out at professional or vetted player reviews. Majority of reviews are complain board entries, they are just not weighted POVs to give overall impression of the game.

But isn't that essentially a problem? It will always start as MVP. For all these years with ED I have grown to accept that it will take very long time to get there where majority of players will feel very happy about feature set. That's why I always have shrugged on Chris loud claims that he will do everything at once, not at measly MVP. But problem is you CAN'T do it differently. It is huge, almost impossible task. It takes incredible amount of money (ED certainly have costed FD around 75M at this point) and it takes long time to get somewhere. While I wanted ED to have a lot more on launch, I also didn't expect it to have planetary landings or walking around at 1.0. It wasn't just possible. Star Citizen is just huge additional reality check on fantasy about 'ready at once' game.

You can certainly compare parts of them and point out as inspiration, but expectations of implementation have certainly grown by multiple, I won't mention network connectivity, graphical fidelity, sound design and arch support, and so on and so forth. All what old games do is indicate that certain aspects of space game inspire us and awe us. They certainly tell very little how difficulty or even possible is do such features these days.

In avoiding to defend FD, I really would like to know what would be "good example" of space game of that scale. Bear in mind, player fantasies and DDF theory crafting just does not qualify (DDF has always been accessible under huge disclaimer about it is just being discussion place not actual development plan point by point. It is certainly place of inspiration for ED, but far too many people read into too much details and come out disappointed). Devs and we, space game fans, can always strive to get something better, but essentially there's nothing to compare against for ED at this point.

Oculus Home apparently needs some 3rd party software (don't know which), but provided Elite Dangerous runs on it either natively or via Steam, then OH will be swiftly uninstalled from my machine. oh the FoV thing for games will likely be up to the developer to code for either as a function of resolution and FoV (which has been in DirectX forever afaik), or the PiMAX will use a kind of adaptive stretching to compensate. The bit that might need some care is that some game engines only render objects once the origin point comes into the field of view so there may be some weird effects at the periphery of vision unless an allowance is made in code (either use the hitbox limits or some other parameter i.e an offset). I'd love to know if FDev are getting one of these HMDs (would be surprised if they were not mind).

Nice tip. I like NeilF's idea of a quick link button in Station Services (though depends what else is planned to go on that page) and as far as the OP goes, a shipyard that can store but doesn't sell ships .. maybe? I get the convenience of it obviously but I think people will start to use engineer bases as a home base and even on a purely roleplaying level .. not sure he/she would appreciate that. I get the feeling Engineers are quiet, keep to themselves hermit types and the fact they're slightly remote kind of resonates with me. Besides how often do you visit an Engineer really? Not all that often in the grand scheme of things I think. Neither do I really. I have a bookmark for any unlocked engineer (eg. ENGINEER WEPS, ENGINEER SHIELDS) and also a bookmark for, ideally a Hi Tech or other shipyard next door (ENGINEER BASE WEPS, ENGINEER BASE SHEILDS) Scouted once, named like that, they sit together in the alphabetical bookmark list, very quick to find.

Been there! Obviously bad for your ship but good, in that engineering can go wrong on you. Reminds me of deploying hardpoints and the rest of your ship shutting down, for lack of power, when surrounded by a wing of Vipers, on your first trip out, and so on .. eek! You can remove the mod of course - I think in any outfitting shop (don't think you can do from ship right panel)

Yeah. You CAN skip through it though. <spacebar> works for me on my set up, once you've started the sequence. Sub-optimal I agree though. I think a bribe the engineer shortcut maybe - BUT I do like and would hope to preserve - that you can choose which blueprint you're going to take to push your tier up. Obviously you choose materials you don't intend to use later, saving those for the mod you really want, and the game wouldn't be able to predict which is which eg. by taking random materials to artificially tier up. He could maybe ask you to jettison, 20 materials for Grade 5 access but .. messy (and to program I expect).

+1 I also repeat that I think the sound effects make a huge difference to the perception here, especially so because the sliders aren't shown to scale. I've also suggested before a basic read out of your ship's new basic stats (jump range, mass and power up/down) with the modification, before accept.

Off topic Cmdr Zeeman but it's not a random setting .. ! When you choose the blueprint you KNOW power will go up by 5 - 10 % but intergrity will go down by 5 - 10% .. or vice versa but you are choosing the bias and that bias is what you get! The exact setting only brings into effect a fundamental truth - engineering tolerances.

OK .. +1 As an extension - maybe - that's (1) more expensive, 3 of each material per blueprint not 1 (2) uses benefit/drawback balancing (eg. if power goes up this much, integrity goes down by that much) .. based off the experience FD gain from the system we have now. I wouldn't remove the RNG entirely - that's a shipyard - I would include ONE unexpected benefit and ONE unexpected drawback (possibly on different modules altogether) for the fact .. that engineering is NEVER an entirely exact science.

I do as well .. I'm kind of concerned that all the belly-aching might wreck it when it's "worked on" at update 3.0 - as rumour has it. For me all Engineering needs is a less game like UI but I actually like the UI .. I really mean improved sound effects. The tick tick and roulette wheel let it down but improve those sounds (a couple of quick suggestions here) and I don't think it's very far from the mark. I think there are legitimate - questions at least - on whether the blueprint outcome balances and recipes are exactly bang on .. and, suggestion 2, if you apply mods you intend to discard to tier up, maybe a shortcut that skips the generation animation (eg. "engineer training" button or "bribe engineer") - for me that adds some polish. The whole thing though? Good!
