    CD sourced audio would only require 1411(.2) kbps of data throughput, uncompressed (i.e. WAV). My FLAC library averages c.894 kbps. USB (even 1.1) would be fine - anything else is overkill from a purely music playback perspective.

    It rather depended what one was doing and where - it also had much less to do - and there was only one path to Elite and that required combat. This game has three paths to Elite and only one of them requires the player to fire a shot at anything. While this game is a sequel to that game, it contains so much more.

    A different approach might be to look at the K/D ratio for a player against NPCs (which should also probably take ship disparity between CMDR / NPC(s) into account) - the higher it gets, the more likely the player is to encounter an NPC with AI, ship and loadout that should offer a more challenging experience. The reason that Combat rank is not a measure of player capability is that, even if the player continues to destroy lower ranked NPCs, their Combat rank will (eventually) reach Elite - like the previous games, Elite rank is a measure of endurance rather than skill.

    It will be interesting to see if Frontier share that opinion. Which apparently affects a tiny fraction of a percent of players - who are being contacted individually. It would seem that Frontier don't want to just "cut them off".... Other than total franchise units sold we don't know the demographic split between Horizons players and those who only own the base game - to suggest that Horizons players are in the majority, while plausible, is an assumption.

    Regardless of the price of the software, the increased hardware requirements for Horizons may price running it out of reach of some existing players - it is not at all difficult to have sympathy for those players. As to Mac players - they have no option except to play on a PC - another financial hurdle (and not everyone wants / has the skills to run BootCamp on their Mac). In instances with only one player - more than that and it gets "complicated".

    Not all players - those without Horizons (and those who cannot run Horizons) don't have access to any Engineers at all. It's unlikely, in my opinion, that Frontier would choose to alienate these players by making the game too difficult (in general rather than avoidable difficulty) for vanilla ships.

    Yet in the previous games the player had "infinite lives" and could choose to restart from any save game that they had stored - not in this game though - endurance is the correct word, as that is all that was really needed to gain Elite ranking (unless one was playing self-imposed iron-man).

    A side effect of making NPCs, in general, more challenging in Solo than in the other modes is that, coupled with the ability of players to form Wings for mutual protection in the multi-player modes, that would make Solo the most difficult mode in the game (as the vast majority of the galaxy in Open and Private Groups is exactly the same as Solo, except where opposing players are encountered). Ironic really given that Solo / Private Groups are often referred to as "easy mode"....

    Some will say yes, others no. Frontier have all the game analytics though - so they can decide if players, on average, are being destroyed by NPCs often enough (or not)....
