Totally. This has pretty much always been my line of thought why the UAs use morse and transmit(ted) human names for celestial bodies... because trying to decode an alien encoding into an alien language would be virtually impossible. It'd be like trying to work out how: SDFSAH##224SF@!!@# equals 456MAGNAWEFAYGHYS% (pro tip, it doesn't... if you want to understand how this feels, base64 encode some output from /dev/random without looking at the original binary. Decode the base64 and try to verify if it's correct or not...)

Reasonable. But hey here's a point: If Hudson pledges kill Winters pledges should that count as non-consensual? What about Aisling pledges? Shouldn't they count as consensual KOS targets for unpledged players?

I can't speak about why *thargoids* would use morse, but there's lots of good (modern) reasons to use morse. - It's virtually impossible to jam a morse transmission - It's transmission power requirements are very low - It's simple, and lends itself to be quite robust to errors For transmitting device(s) located in the middle of space quite possibly for very prolonged periods of time, these are all very desirable qualities. Ps. Looks like i have some reading to do thatchino...

Yes, it blocks it, and while a conflict state may only *appear* in one system for a multi-system faction, the "None" state is a red-herring... the conflict state applies for all systems that faction is present in (thus why when in War/Civil War, you see a gradual drop-off of influence in other systems, as the same restraints i.e only combat actions/bonds increase influence, apply to all systems) It's best not to think of war/civil wars and elections as separate things, even though functionally they are quite different. For the purposes of going pending for any of those three they are all "conflict" states and will block each other in pending/active/recovery. So, to answer your question: No, civil war/war won't go pending in System B while the target faction is in Election recovery in System A.

Don't know if this has been raised yet. But. As a long term pledge- like a hundred and fifteen weeks with Big Eddie Mahon i don't want a reset. And although I never unpledge I only push PowerPlay sometimes.

Wow. Thanks for the heads up, I'm a week lapsed on zero merits. At a hundred and fifteen weeks pledged I would have hated the reset.

Yup. See again my post about machetes simply being farming tools. In fact, a lot of weaponry started life as farming tools. Beta bashing again,... UAs are just thargoid sensors. This didnt stop us using them as weapons to intentionally shut down stations.

So who did Jacques meet? He specifically references the Unknown Artefacts "singing" or something like that. "They sing and then they find you" think was the line.

Actually, there's lots of real-world examples of exactly this sort of thing... cases where locals have been teaching kids to shoot by getting them to practice firing air rifles (nonlethal, for the most part) at passing armoured convoys. Really grey area for LOAC. And well, snowballs aren't all that innocent either. Bougainville was a really interesting example because the ROE required people to be armed with "weapons". Machettes were considered "farming tools" and therefore you couldn't stop anyone just for carrying a machette despite being a weapon of choice. But that's getting off-topic... So there's one piece of the puzzle missing for me right now... Most things are starting to become relatively apparent, except one (well, two). Jacques and Halsey. I think it's fair to say Palin got abducted by someone associated with the Black Flight operations, and there *may* be an argument for Halsey, except her experiences are very similar to Jacques (from his local galnet articles when first discovered),...

usually I don't correct as there a lot of non-native Elnglish speakers here and I fully respect the kind of "have a go" and "get my drift" and "not strictly correct" and "good enough for government work" usage of idiom. But you've used this a few times, and you can do better: pastime = a hobby (what you intended) pass time = spend time doing something (it lacks the sense of enjoyment in the above) past time = overdue so actually now, I kinda hope you keep using "past time" but ironically - knowing that it's nails down a chalkboard for tedious old pedants like myself.

Yup. There is literally heaps out there for smuggling. Combining different states with some of the power effects can result in very big profit margins.

For me at least, it's less about "censorship", and more that things in Beta don't necessarily make it into live, so if something is only observed in the Beta, then that invalidates it as evidence for any theories in the current live game. That doesn't mean we shouldn't speculate on things in Beta, but it doesn't help to muddy waters on things that literally aren't in the game. tl;dr anyone reading beta stuff should always have some skepticism about it.

Beta Inside, read at your own peril: As always, referencing stuff in Beta is fraught and shouldn't be taken as gospel. That said, I'm not so sure about communication being the intent of the morse. In the 2.4 Beta, Unknown Artefacts (the only thargoid devices using morse) are rebadged as Thargoid Sensors. All others (links, probes etc) remain the same barring s/unknown/thargoid/g. So, they're sensors. Sensors detect events/changes in an environment and report them somewhere. I doubt they were trying to report that information to us though. The change in name to Sensors holds well with the idea that the UA "shell" was some sort of early warning system, or at the very least, a detection system/sensor network. For communications attempts, the Unknown Link/Unknown Probe make far more sense in terms of naming at least, for mechanisms to communicate with us.

Bought an Imperial Clipper without enough for insurance, had never flown a ship that big before. Learned what inertia was, and how you need to be a lot more careful if you're boosting out the letterbox :(

MB was on the record having said there's a reason the Unknown Objects use Morse/Octal/whatever. EDIT: Bingo. For the morse: And the octal:
